Close, but not completely true. Not all government agency computers are required to be wiped. Only those which may contain confidential information. My grandmother is currently using a defunct government computer (with the same operating system).
I have actually helped do some minor consulting for them to help wipe the data. not sure if any of it is being implemented bbut thats beside the point.
Anything that isn't prohibited is not only allowed, but also ethical.
There IS a grain of truth to this, at least in a way. The way I see it, you should always approach people with the idea that this is their motto. If you don't expect them to do something stupid or immoral then your in for a surprise. Everyone has their own ideas on what is ethical and moral (I've taken two ethics in IT style courses & a business ethics course) and there as varied as the shades of skin on this planet, and sometimes just as related.
Keeping your view of ethics simple is the best way to deal with other peoples views. Depending on where you are in the chain of command you will have to temper your dealings with people to accompany your relation with them.
I have 8 on mine, 4 of which are lit on a regular basis. Power, HDD, Wi-Fi, and numlock. (probably the least useful) My point is, none of these lights is useless, they all tell me something is running. The others, bluetooth, capslock, scrollock, and the low battery indicator, are also useful, even if I don't use them much.
Just like on a router, Those are incredibly useful and they all mean something. The only lights on my electronics that I wouldn't miss are the lights that show power is being received, like on my speakers, but even those can be useful.
Seriously though, If the lights are a problem he should just cover them up, and quit complaining.
while I see your point it's still quite a stretch. However, all glider did was provide a way for people to cheat, the user has to chose to use the program. It would be difficult for Blizzard, that is if they weren't a huge corporation, to prove that there was malicious intent in the creation of this program.
Also, I'm not sure what Blizzard hopes to accomplish with this. It is well known that bots are parasites that will attach themselves to just about any MMO w/ heavy grinding. Even if the makers of Glide stop making there program, it will simply be replaced within a month by a new program. On top of that, with the ease of adding mods to WoW hacks, and bots are never going away.
The one perspective that I havent seen in this whole debate is that BB is just trying to cover its ass on a legal basis. Think about it.
Your a BB exec and you see many similar programs appearing and you have no legal claim to the technology. What would happen if someone built a very similar program and grabbed the copyright. They could then Sue BB for many monies and possibly take over.
And I truly believe that they intend to honor there promise of not suing freeware/OSS system providers, clear up until they are "under new management"
umm...not so fictitious. The lasers you see in scifi shows are still very far off but we do have lasers today that can be used for missile defense. Its not ZAP-BOOM but rather a process of using the rays in the laser to overheat the internal systems in the missiles control systems thus disarming it. Think of it like setting a spotlight right next to your computer and turning it on. How long do you think your comp is gonna run with that much heat applied directly to it?
For those who missed retrievr...http://labs.systemone.at/retrievr/
While this is good for hours of entertainment, i hope what theyre promoting is better.
Does anyone else see this disk going into an older player accelerating to its normal play speed, catching a corner, and disentigrating inside the player ruining both the player and the disk. WOOO, $200 worth of damage just to protect their movie which is just going to be recorded and distributed on the internet anyway.
WOW someone has a beef with MMORPGs and doesnt understand that the world doesnt revolve around them.
Anyways, I know exactly what your talking about when u mention that sore spot when people say "this looks like warcraft" and even worse when im explaining the gameplay and people say "so the spacemarines are kindof like the terrans." I plan on getting it and hopefully *crosses fingers* getting in on the beta. I played WOW and it was a good game, but i found that once i hit about lvl 30 i just lost interest.
I hate to break it to you but thats how most government agancies work. Any money they bring in goes into their budget so that they rely less on government tax funding.
For instance, the department of wildlife and parksin most states (may be unfamiliar to this site usual traffik) earns most of their budget from the sales of hunting licenses and hip stamps. This money is used for maintanance of public lands. The public rarely sees most of this money however it helps keep taxes low. In this way hunters, fishers, adn campers pay to maintain resources they use instead of someone who lives in NYC and the closest they come to nature is the local park.
The FCC uses the rental fees from the stations to enforce regulations instead of getting all of that money from taxes, keeping the financial stress on those who gain the most from the use of a resource. If public airwaves were not controled, aside from the obvious overcrowding and lack of standardization, then the FCC would have to get its money from ALL taxpayers instead of just those who take advantage of the situation.
and here I was beginning to think /. had some standards

Penny-arcade is known to not be sony friendly. Though in the past their dislike has held to SOE and not so much for SCEA as a whole.
You want a scientific reason why WiFi is harmless? How bout the fact that more radiation is emitted from a 60W light bulb than a 100mW AP.
That Scientific enough? It's not just that there is no science to back up harmful WiFi Theories, It's that their is evidence to the contrary.

Gerrymandering is illegal by federal law. Its just hard to enforce without whistle-blowers.
NO STEAM FOR THE PS3. I want one more than ever now! :)
