Miguel, please. I believe you have the sincerest intensions in making Microsofts technology run on Linux (.Net). Mono is a great piece of technology - Banshee would not be without it.

However, i get the feeling like youre doing the devils work for Microsoft - youre spreading their technology when the market doesnt want it. What youre basically doing is helping the "bait and switch" strategy to work - and they get it for free (by making the community do it for them). Silverlight and the other runtime gizmo is not needed and not wanted in the Linux world. However oncw you do port it, some people will look at it, decide it's the fastes/first thing they found good-enough for thir project. Or even more possible, it gets a killer app. Now Microsoft kills your effort (or severs it badly thru legal-foo) and now the project is in shatters. Do you really want that?

.Net got remote attention because of Mono (i didnt meet any windows aplication except crap stuff like the ATi Control Panel that required .net), and i view that as a mixed bag of things. This however should be left alone to either rot or prevail - then the discussion if we should implement should begin.

Youre right about paying - lets be clear - MacOS X is paid software. However, you don't need to install from the ground up on every revision! Ill summarize : you pop the DVD into your mac, Click the "Install MacOS X" icon, a window appears with a restart button on it. You click it, it reboots and runs off the DVD (you don't need to hold C if you do it this way). You get greeted into the installer. When it asks you where to install you select your drive, and if you select the one with the old OS, you automatically get the slide-out window with a selection of options: -Clean Install -Install Over (and preserve User home dirs, Applications etc.) -Move the old System to a folder and do the same as the option above. So in fact the upgrade process is there, and ive used it - its VERY reliable (which is because its unix-based, you just need to upgrade a dozen of directories and files, no stupid meddling with a registry and hoopla of .ini files). However, I admit, that the ubuntu upgrade process is nicer - you dont need to even boot of the cd - it just upgrades the packages and runs script in those packages. I think OSX _Could_ do this since it also has packages - check your /Library/Receipts and youll find a lot of package information. In fact, i believe i upgraded my 10.4.6 to a 10.4.8 using a .dmg and runnign OSInstall.pkg and i did it straight from my running 10.4.6 - worked without a problem.

Only when yo compare them to bottom line machines from Dell. But do you have such a design with Dell? Wheres the nice remote? The magnetic plug (if you use a laptop like me), the everything-built-in? The small form-factor?. For example its only fair to compare Macbooks to the more expensive Sony VAIOs, and then price-wise apple wins. But if you want a cheap-o machine, then you probably will see them as expensive. But after 2 iBooks, one Dell and one HP i know as far as portables go, Macs are the only way to go (at least for me). The more money spent on apple is for me well spent.

  9. Re:Will this run on AMD? on Apple Delays Leopard to October · · Score: 1

No. OSX only runs on Apple computers. Now you _can_ hack it and run on any PC (provided the hardware is copatible), but this is not supported, endorsed or even seen legal by Apple. Actually, you can't do that legally with Tiger either, since you can't buy a boxed Intel version of it, and the PPC ones dont work on Intel. With Leopard, thats going to change (its a universal disc, that boots up on both PPC and Intel Macs) and provided you do buy a boxed copy, then crack the kernel in some way and make it work, id say youre in a very grey zone, not to mention that in the US youre braking the DMCA. Buy a Mac and be done with it, its really worth it.

So yeah, im willing to believe that AAC will superseed MP3. Besides, ive been using it for about 1 year now (yes, i re-ripped my music), and whilst i had to have MP3s at about 192kbs VBR, i get the same with 128-160kb, thus i can carry more music with me! Launch your iTunes, Go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing. Select desired format in "Import Using.." (You have AAC, MP3, AIFF, Apple Lossless and WAV), select quality (if applicable), Ok.

And yes, it can be really bad. Just look at some internet cafes which still have CRT monitors. Most of the PCs there are from cheap parts = bad image quality (the most common is beeing a skippy picture and the "pumping effect") And yes, these flaws even showed up on VGA-based LCD monitors. VGA was good for CRTs. But now theres no need to translate from digital to analog and back to digital again (especially when now most of our monitors are LCD). Conversion == bad in this instance.
