  1. Re:May free speach and free thought live on on Updates on War in Iraq · · Score: 1
Collages are fairly cheap, and I would hope we wouldn't go to war over art (although Herr Bush seems to be willing to fight at the drop of a hat lately).

Seriously though, I feel bad for the kids who signed up with the army to get the cash for college and have to go to war now. But there are other ways. I funded my education completely through scholarships and financial aid and my school costs ~39.5k/year (now, I think it was 37k/year when I got here 3 years ago). Bottom line, they'll be sure to tell their kids not to throw their lot in with the nutcases we currently (and seemingly perennially) have in power in the US for a measly few thousand dollars.

I think the saddest part of the whole thing is the defeatist attitude of the peace movement (or at least the people I'm involved with). Many people seem to be of the opinion that since we didn't prevent the war, we should give up and deal with it. To me that sets a bad example for the youth of the nation, just because our fuhrer^H^H^H^H^H^H president is stubborn and oblivious to his citizens doesn't mean we should cease trying to persuade him to stop the war.

A final question: Would it be considered assault with a deadly weapon if someone hit Bush with a Cluebat?

From my experience (I'm graduating in May too), the people who are really having a tough time finding jobs at my school are the people who've been here for four years and never worked anywhere more challenging than one of the local restaraunts, or for some reason never worked at all. The best advice I have to offer to those still in school is to go out and find a job in your field, even if it's only 20 hours a week, and even if the pay is crap (I'm talking minimum wage bad, believe me it'll be worth it in the long run even though you could make more money at one of the typical college jobs). Working for next to nothing a few hours a week for your last couple years of school will help you immensely when it comes to your post-graduation job search. The easiest time to get internships is in January and February when no one else is looking and companies are budgeting for the coming year and discovering variances that they could use to pay an intern.

The bottom line is that you can't just expect to start looking for jobs 2 months before you graduate and find something decent, you have to start preparing yourself far in advance. I hear college is supposed to be fun and games, but the people I know who don't have jobs are the ones who always bitch at me for not going drinking with them on Thursday night and can't understand that I can't just "skip work" Friday morning. So I guess I'll live with missing out on the fun and games now in exchange for a better shot at a job later (Assuming I elect to get a job, grad school is calling my name now).

Almost all "good" encryption uses prime numbers. If someone can figure out how to factor prime numbers, or find a quick way to determine a prime number, then all the fancy encryption in the world wont help because someone can just crack it in real time.

So far you're not too far off base

Right now public encryption works because it would take so long to break the encryption, even with say... 300k computers (distrubted.net) that when the encryption was broken (5-10 years later) the info would be old and it would not matter.

OK, you show that you possess basic logic skills

If someone could figure out some way to factor primes (which is along the lines of riemans sums) then they could possibly break even our stronger prime based encryption, which would make a great many people have to go back to teh drawing board on encrypting their data.

Here you make a grevious error, factoring primes is NOT "along the lines of Riemann sums." Riemann's Hypothesis, which relies on Riemann's zeta function, has little or nothing in common with Riemann Sums beyond...Riemann. Your high school calculus course did NOT teach you how to prove Riemann's Hypothesis. As a matter of fact, it's due to people like you that headlines such as "Great theorem X is proven by 26 year old construction worker with minimal understanding of multi-variable calculus," keep appearing and being proven to be WRONG. Please do a little background reading before you present your analysis to "the laymans." As a side note, I do have a degree in mathematics, though admittedly only a B.S. and even with that background, I don't feel comfortable enough with the proof to present myself as an authoritative source. However, I do know enough to point out that your statements are incorrect.

This article and the flood of uninformed and ignorant responses bring to light the need for a moderation system that provides mod points to people who actually understand the article.

Don't give yourself so much credit, everyone has had to "kick a habit" at some point in their lives, drugs, drinking, and smoking are just behavior patterns like everything else. Personally I quit smoking 11 months ago after smoking for 8 years (I've also stopped other more harmful and nefarious habits), and I didn't find it any more difficult than breaking my longstanding predisposition to sleep from 6AM to noon and instead adopt a normal schedule like the rest of society (which has done wonders for my productivity).

Like it or not, gaming is just another behavior pattern and you can "just stop." As a related post has already mentioned, all it requires is willpower, if you don't have any you might want to develop some now, because I guarantee you'll need it later in life.

Remember, "You are the same decaying organic matter as everything else," try to pull yourself together.

As an aside, I can't imagine anyone considering sex a habit (especially on Slashdot), much less ever wanting to kick that habit, but hey, that's just my opinion.

If you really don't want to eat meat and don't need it, then you don't need a substitute for it.

There are a plethora of vegetarian dishes which do not rely on fake meat and taste much better as a result. ...$8 soy-sausages just seem ridiculous to me.

Yes, working has been proven to yield financial rewards. I am a full time college student taking 18 hours every semester and I also work a full time job. No, I don't have time to sit around and play video games every day but I do party on the weekends (responsibly of course). I have a cell phone, a pda, a laptop, 3 computers (Athlon 800 or better), and a decent amount of nice hi-fi equipment (Note I said hi-fi, this means not Sony and other crappy consumer level brands). Just because you're in college doesn't mean you have to be poor. On the other hand if you're lazy and irresponsible then I fully support you being destitute, becoming a bum, and hopefully persevering against all odds to survive long enough to do something monumentally stupid and win a Darwin award.

Yes self reliance is beneficial, however self pity is not. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and realize that you lived that way because you chose to, just as I chose to work a full time job and go to school in lieu of a social life 5 nights a week.

FYI: Your nutritional habits probably contributed to your low energy level which explains why you may not have elected to get a job and earn some money. It sounds dumb, but good nutrition and a proper amount of sleep (when possible) will increase your productivity exponentially. Yeah, I sound like my parents, but maybe that's not such a bad thing.

Finally, The stage of life you are in (i.e. college) does not determine your values, motivations, or financial status, you do, accept the responsibility for the way you lived because it was your choice.
