  1. Case that maims (not kills) motherboards. on Antisocial Hardware? · · Score: 1

I had someone give me a case w/ a nice KX450 based PPro motherboard. It has an odd NVRAM error with it. Other than that it works fine. After upgrading my 8KTA3 (KT133A) with a newer DDR capable board, I stuck the 8KTA3 in that case, when the board was on the motherboard tray, it acted like something was shorting, I couldn't see anything shorting, double checked the standoff placement 20 times. Remove it, it works.... with the exception of the POST code feature. That's now dead. But like the 450KX board, everything else works fine. ...bastard!

  2. The story of my first PC... and my family... on Family Tech Support · · Score: 1

About 1996, I had graduated from high school, had $1000 in a savings account, and I wanted to REALLY learn about computers. So I picked up a $900 Packard Bell P133. It was a screamer compared to my parents 486SX33 (also a packard bell). Other than being the start of a massive upgrade path that has no signs of the original computer except for the speakers (literally, I still use them). I sold it to my dad after the first major upgrade. All the way to a 233K6 on a 430TX board. He quickly bought the latest and greatest games, which filled up the hard drive, they required 1.1GB, the HD's size was 1GB. A few upgrades later and a few windows reinstallations late, it was sold to his brother... 400 miles away.

You'd think this is the end, but given the fact that it was shipped back twice and had windows reinstalled both times. You can tell that it wasn't. He eventually upgraded and sold it to my dad's OTHER brother so his kids can use it.

Last thanksgiving I was down there visiting family. And yet again, did a bit of tech support on that old PC. Six years after I bought it, and four years after I sold it, 3 years after my dad sold it, and 1 year after my uncle gave it away.

  3. Email Phone on The Tyranny of Email · · Score: 3, Insightful

Personally, I strongly perfer email to the phone. Why?

You can check your email when you're done with what you're in the middle of.

You don't have to respond right away, you can find the correct and complete answer.

Reduced accent errors. Ever work in a place with people from India, Pakistan, Taiwan, Germany, England, US, Vietnam, and the Phillipines? Sometimes it's hard to tell what everyone is saying even though it's all in English.

It keeps a record. You don't need to remember exactly what the guy said, it's written down! Very handy for part numbers.

You know who you're dealing with. "Hey, this is Mike..." on the phone is replaced with something like "Mike Smith -mike.smith@company.com-". You're not dealing with Mike Jones.

Long, technical matters can be spelled out in detail. If a procedure on how to do something can be spelled out in words, it's more likely to be followed without errors than if it's orally passed over a half hour phone conversation.

Cool down period. If you're getting upset and starting to argue, you can pause, cool down, and take care of it with a cool head isntead of ending up in a verbal flamefest.

    ---

If you want something that breaks your concentration, it's not email, it's the phone and PA systems.

Sound like ISDN? Yup, it's ISDN w/o voice. ADSL? The A stands for "absent" because at over 4 miles away it isn't going to show up. And people whining about thier 42k connections can blow me. I get 24kbps ON A GOOD DAY and I have one of the better lines for my neighborhood. 14.4k isn't uncommon. The phone company guarantees voice. That's it. If you want more, your options are ISDN, T1, and the USPS.

Currently, for transferring large amounts of data the USPS has the best throughput.

I'm into anime a bit, and there's a LOT of anime that just never makes it to the US because it wouldn't be profitable. Some of it is quite good, others make it over only to get hacked to pieces by americanization.

One upcoming example is a show called ".hack//SIGN" (pronounced .hack). It is an excellent show in Japan that will be released in the US by Bandai, the main character has already been renamed from "Tsukasa" to "Kite". And Bandai has made an OVA, which from what I hear is nothing short of a train wreck. Now remember that this is a show that's already on TV in Japan. Not a theatrical release.

An example of a show that will NEVER make it to the US is "Puni Puni Poemi". If you wanna know what it's about just use your favorite search engine. Due to various themes that range from sexual to silly it just doesn't fit into any of the main stream US "catagories". "People" want either pr0n or silliness. "They" don't want both. Personally I found the show to be downright hilarious. Even though I wouldn't show it to any kids :)

The problem with this quote is basically it's saying "Disabled people need slaves". Last I checked there's not a large pool of reliable, trustworthy people that want to become slaves. My grandpa has gone excessively senile and my grandma has to do everything for him. Now, I love my grandpa, but I'd never be able to stand having to be on call 24/7/52 whenever he needed anything. What these "gadgets" ARE good for is working towards the next best thing: independance. Being able to do everything you want to do under your own initiative instead of having someone else do it. Leaving the house and meeting friends when you want to, and not having to convince, or order, someone else to.
