One reason for doing this though is that many of the sites block out non-IE users. Then what? My personal solution is to go to the site again, identify as IE, enter the site, then switch back. For some reason this has to be done with Yahoo! Mail. The first page requires an IE identification, but subsequent pages do not.
I just had a similar thing happen to me within my work environment. They system admin refused to support MySQL (and I don't have access to the box its on), then when it wouldn't work correctly told the higher ups that open source software such as this, and the PHP I am using, are unsupported and unreliable. I am now being forced to switch to SQL Server. So far I've been able to hold onto using PHP.
And to think that the are 3600 signatures on that petition, even with the reminder at the top that the book was named 47 years ago. I wonder if this guy was really serious. People need to move on...
You're right that it probably wasn't nice of me to sick/. on them. I didn't think of that before I posted. Got to remember to think, then post. Don't worry though, they're not my friends. I am only loosely associated with the community and figure that if they want to post their IM addresses for anyone with a browser to see then they must not mind getting a lot of junk and solicitations.
But I wouldn't guarantee any show up. If I were a single geek girl (I'm married) I know I'd find it intimidating. Think of the ratio of guys/girls and how many people are going to be hitting on you if you are the least bit attractive. The last thing most girls want is a horde of geeks drooling all over them, even if they are like minded.
Well that's because you searched for Lindows. Most regular shoppers will not do that. If you follow the link in the original story, you do get an explanation. Same if you click on the link for Computers in the electronics part of the site or navigate through the site in any manner. Its only when you search that you don't get the description.
These computers do not ship with Microsoft Windows. They ship with an exciting new UNIX based Operating System (OS) named Lindows. This exciting new OS delivers the stability of UNIX with the ease of Windows and the ability to run most Microsoft programs. These computer systems are a perfect low cost alternative to computers preloaded with Microsoft Windows
Still I see your point that consumers are sometimes so stupid that they won't understand.
They have offices in Des Moines and Bettendorf. I don't have the addresses, but when you search the MS jobs section, those two cities are on their list of where they have jobs available.
XM must be doing a hell of a lot more advertising than Sirius, perhaps because their network isn't completed yet or they have better funding? I have yet to see a single Sirius commercial on tv while XM ones are appearing with greater and greater frequency daily. Truthfully I hadn't heard of Sirius at all before this article today.
What I really wish I could do with my car radio is get foreign radio stations; commercials and all would be fine with me. I have one particular London station that I stream at work daily that I would love to be able to get in the car. Any chance that will happen? My first impressions of satellite radio were that this was the premise, being able to get radio from around the country and the world. When I found out it was going to be music only channels put together by some company I was almost dissapointed. I must be one of the minority that thinks that station personalities actually add to the programming on occasion. I do really like the idea of all those news and talk radio channels though. One of my favorite FM stations is purely talk. Sorry to ramble...
etc.... I'm sure a Google search can get you in touch with people who'd like to investigate and critique books with you. Slashdot just doesn't seem like the place for good literary discussion.
This happened with us. At our house we downloaded the track called Business a few days before we bought the Eminem Show album and it was just a few lines repeated over and over. I just assumed the preview option wasn't working in our P2P program since its happened before or that the song was really that repetitive. It could happen.
I don't think I buy the idea that Eminem did something like this himself though, or even came up with the idea on his own. Same with No Doubt- its likely the band members didn't have anything to do with the files being changed. More likely blame the label (Interscope), as the article attests. So in essence I guess I'm just saying its happened to me too!! and I agree!!
It certainly happened with Eminem tracks (at our house we downloaded the track called Business a few days before we bought the album and it was just a few lines repeated over and over), but not sure that he, Dre, or Interscope would do something like that themseleves. As much as they are concerned with copying, they didn't do much to protect the cd.
The only site I know of for jobs in Switzerland that is available in English and is fairly comprehensive is Monster. http://www.monster.ch/ (As you probably know, the CH stands for Confoederatio Helvetica, other words for Switzerland).
This page, from the Swiss Embassy in London, will tell you all about attaining employment in Switzerland. It seems to be more helpful than many I've found. As someone said below, by the sounds of things it can be quite hard to secure a work permit. Like many other countries, they must not have any available local applicants who are as qualified as you are in order for you to get the job. In other words, they must fill positions with their own citizens first.
This site can you give you a lot of info about Switzerland. As terrible as it looks, it does have useful information.
Other suggestions for games that are not first person shooters, might be more accepted by girls (and parents), and won't give people motion sickness (which I know some people get with all the 3D action in games like Quake) are Heroes of Might and Magic, Warcraft and Dark Reign.
These are also games that come with the ability to make your own maps. It could be fun and educational to have the students make maps for the other users to play.
I think this is a good idea for the truly techie people, but it might scare off some of the people who just like to play games. The non-techie types might be intimidated and scared off. If the idea is to get lots of kids off the streets, programming games might not do it where playing games would. Just a thought.
You don't need to remember what one browser does versus another. You just need to code to the W3C standards and preferably also meet the accessibility guidelines.
Even though IE is incorporating things people would like to see, they are are often not adhering to the standards. And by doing so, they are making things worse for web designers/developers. By allowing poor designers with screwed up code to have pages that render properly they are doing a disservice. We should be able to only make one version of a site and have it look fairly good in most browsers if it validates. Everyone should be able to view the page, not just a person with a certain browser. And the way to do this should be by coding to meet the standards with the assurance that the various browswers use those same standards. And I wouldn't depend on a particular software to do that for you.
I don't really see what the point of the last part of your post is. Why did you inform us that slashdot users are tech savvy or that people use a variety of development tools?
I read this far down and to make this on topic, you're completely right about the wierd text sizing. I find that sometimes I'll have to zoom in on pages to read them. At least that zoom option is there for us to use.
So what is the point in publishing this story now? I can't believe that the media just found out. It's something most of us have known about for years. We need to figure out what their purpose is in letting more people know about this. Is it just another attempt to point out how many people are stealing? Is it to encourage more people to do it and pull one over on At&T since they're raising prices? Was it a slow news day and they were grasping for content? There's got to be a reason this story was published now. Any ideas?
I use Opera mainly because of the tabbed browsing and the ability to turn off images with one click. On our crappy dialup at home, that's important. I also enjoy the zoom feature, the quick preferences and the ability to open popup windows in the background, or not at all. Not to mention that it eliminates the problem of page widening posts!!
I'd love to use Opera exclusively, and I use it for almost all of my browsing, but it seems to have a problem with many secure sites. It just can't open the pages and I get a could not locate remote server error. Anybody have any ideas why this occurs? Anything I can do to fix it? Too bad I have to use IE as a backup just for instances like this.
Hopefully they're raising prices so they can improve their services and bring broadband to more people. I would be very happy to pay quite a bit just to have broadband at all. We live on a farm in the midwest and honestly can't get over 26 kbps dialup connection. Most of the day we get a whopping 21.6. Try downloading a song or even email attachments at.5-2k at a time and see how much you'd be willing to pay for your service. We have to pay $19 for the crap we get. I'd pay $50 a month or perhaps a little more for the lowest DSL or cable speed connection.
Of course this is all just wishful thinking. I'm sure the companies don't have any intention of improving or increasing services. Most of them are on their way to bankruptcy anyway.
I can tell you how it is biased and fails the non traditional student. If you are a student who is still really young (under 21) but doesn't live at home, and aren't married (living with someone doesn't count), the parent is still fully expected to pay. Therein lies the problem.
For my first two or three years of college, I was uneligible for grants and other forms of aid because I was forced to take my parents income into consideration. When reporting on the FAFSA and other forms, if you were listed on your parents taxes in the last three years as a dependant, you must report their income. My parents did not help me pay for my college - yet the system assumes that they will just because of my age. Thus their higher incomes made me ineligible for most financing.
Personally I was forced to work full time while attending school just to be able to afford to go to community college. A university would have been completely unaffordable. If I would have had kids, this would likely have been an impossible task.
And yes, I was considered a non-traditional student because of the fact that I didn't live in the dorms and worked. My advisor had the nerve to suggest several times that students with full loads were strongly encouraged to work 20 hours a week or less.
I wish these people good luck with their financial aid quest.
If she'll be driving to school, jumper cables (with instructions) and a Slim Jim or other car unlocking device will be good. A lot of people lock themselves out of their cars or leave the lights on and I'll admit I've done both countless times. She'll be popular on her floor if she knows how to use them and is willing to help people out.
Or instead, get her a AAA or Amoco Motor Club membership and they'll do those things for her for free plus throw in things like changing tires and bringing you gas if you run out. Memberships are pretty cheap, but invaluable if you have an emergency. Tow trucks come a lot faster if they motor club calls them. My parents got me a membership when I left home and I used it a lot but probably wouldn't have gotten it for myself.

Yes they do! Take a look at http://www.linuxchix.org/ for one spot where they gather.

If you'd like to discuss reading, I suggest you join a reading discussion forum. For example:
SF/Fantasy - http://www.sffworld.org/forums/
NY Times Book Forums(all sorts of genres) - http://www.nytimes.com/books/forums/
etc.... I'm sure a Google search can get you in touch with people who'd like to investigate and critique books with you. Slashdot just doesn't seem like the place for good literary discussion.

From the editorial review:
The Scar begins with Miéville's frantic heroine, Bellis Coldwine, fleeing her beloved New Crobuzon in the peripheral wake of events relayed in Perdidio Street Station. But her voyage to the colony of Nova Esperium is cut short when she is shanghaied and stranded on Armada, a legendary floating pirate city.
