  9. Lag and all on Neuro-Reckoning May Reduce MMOG Time Lag · · Score: 1

The problem with MMO's are they often try and predict what the player is going to be doing. You often find yourself somewhere you are not expecting. In World of Warcraft this can bee seen by other players as rubber banding, you character moves forward and backwards erratically or in Dark Age of Camelot where players produce artificial lag which causes the same effect but the game allows you to do actions while you are lagged such as casting, changing directions and others.

All predictions in MMO's save on bandwidth needed to actually play the game at the expense of player enjoyment.

The only question left for the consumer is this behavior acceptable to you?

Now where this new "neural network in each player's computer to predict fast, jerky actions." Is interesting but flawed. You can't have this stuff on the client computer. If you have never played a MMO, it my regret to inform you that, everything client side can be and will be hacked and taken to pieces to gain any advantage against fellow players.

  10. Record Companies, Marketing and Money on Name-Your-Cost Radiohead Album Pirated More Than Purchased · · Score: 1

Ok here's the problem with Bit Torrent and other free downloads. There's no marketing involved. It's all word of mouth. That's bad for the marketing industry as they can't show you all their other products that they have for sale. You are downloading a song so you won't see that new Led Zeppelin compilation at 65$ that just came out with the DvD interviews and limited posters.

So the record companies can't push boy bands as hard anymore because people know they are crap and just won't listen to them. So they are doing the next evolution in marketing. Pussycat Dolls and Rock Group Supernova, American Idol. Well that worked well except legitimate artists don't want to go that route.

The Record companies don't have a problem with iTunes because of the massive ads. As long as they can put something somewhere to entice you to buy this latest no-name band that they just singed to a ridiculous contract, and make a slim profit they'll be happy.

Let's see are there any ads on the iTunes web site?

Halo Announced [July 21, 1999, 10:59 am ET] - Viewing Comments
loonyboi just called in from MacWorld (where he's "on assignment"), with word that Bungie has finally announced their super-secret upcoming project, Halo at Steve Jobs' keynote address. The official Halo website has the first tidbits on the game, which is being developed for simultaneous release for both Windows and the Mac. loony got to see Halo earlier this year, and has been bursting at the seems to talk about it since then (but was under threat of death), because the demonstration (on a Mac) blew him away. The Press Release describes the game in detail, and I'll clip a piece below, as well as snagging the screenshot from the site, because it indeed, looks that cool. Here goes:

With no levels or breaks in gameplay, Halo gives players complete freedom of movement over open terrain. Vast outdoor vistas, complete with flora, fauna, weather and celestial events, are complemented with indoor environments of comparable detail and complexity. A universal physics model and persistent objects make events in this world utterly convincing. In this open environment, gameplay is not linear but unfolds in response to the player's actions.

I remember way back reading Blues news and loonyboi had this new game from Bungie, how great it was going to be and it was comming out on PC next year. Well next year came, Microsoft baught Bungie and it became an X-Box only title.

I was so dissapointed, I don;t play console games.

I think it finally came out on the PC 1 1/2 year later but by that time my interest in the game was gone.

And I think this is what Bungie is seeing now. Yes they are probably making money under Microsoft ownership, but are also probably losing millions due to platform restrictions. who know i might buy Halo4.
