With the advent of the Internet and P2P technologies, the playing field has never been more level for all artists. If an artist truly cares about not supporting this ridiculous campaign against their own fans, they have never been in a better position to do something about it than now.
There's this thing called "The Internet". Perhaps you may have heard of it? They have these things called "peer-to-peer filesharing programs". I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I think this may be a good avenue to pursue for independent artists to get noticed...
I've need exactly that on various YouTube videos. Not sure if that's only on "official" videos from a bands channel or something, but they had iTunes and Amazon links I think.
To answer your original question, no. They're not insane, they're just greedy.
There really is not incentive to use non-MS products. MS gives away all its software to university students and windows for the classrooms.
You mean aside from getting your students to learn how to work a computer in general concepts instead of just how to work MS Office $CURRENT_YEAR? Not to mention learning a variety of tools and software they can actually use legally for free once they graduate and are no longer students.
It may be some kind of "requirement" for EU member states, but does the EU override the actual laws of Sweden, which he is following? I have a feeling that only Sweden itself can impose its laws on him. At the very least, he seems willing to find out.
In thinking about I wrote, I guess there really are superhero movies for kids. Bolt, Underdog, Incredibles, the Spy Kids series, Sharkboy and Lavagirl, the upcoming Monsters vs Aliens. Heck, even Race to Witch Mountain could be considered a superhero movie. I guess I just want my kid to be able to watch the heroes I grew up with.
I have to disagree with you on The Incredibles. That was by far the most adult movie Pixar has yet made. It was dealing with issues that are specific to adults (mid-life crises, for example) and, while the second half of the movie had some fantastic action, the first half was mostly dialogue. Good, character-building dialogue which I thoroughly enjoyed, but I saw a father with his young daughter who took her out in his arms because she fell asleep during the first half of the movie. Kids are likely to be bored stiff by that part.
No, we'd rather they be able to stream content into other places in the world. I don't give a rats ass about the legal crap. It's their mess, and they need to work it out. Until then, don't expect us to stop going to places like The Pirate Bay to get content we can't stream otherwise.
Exactly. I hate MS as much as the next Linux dude, but this situation is hardly their fault. The company contracted to build this portal was obviously retarded, but unless they were bribed by MS themselves, this has nothing to do with Redmond.
Even a bigger issue - these free downloads ALMOST 100% garner interest in these products - so that when they had money, or felt they wished to support a product, the former free-bee turned them into a paying customer to get a new version.
Jackpot! We have a winner, folks!
As an interesting anecdote, I've found this to be the case with myself as well. Now that I actually have a job with real income, as opposed to being a bankrupt student who would be a happy paying customer except for getting sued out of existence by a bunch of greedy lawyers.
At least in the case of my wife's sister, she needs a keyboarding program or some such nonsense for school that requires Windows. My mom wanted a Mac (which I was all in favour of, for her) but everybody at the school she teaches at uses Windows-based PCs so if she got stuck, nobody could help her. She eventually decided to just stick with a Windows-based laptop for Office and their marking/attendance programs. At least with the factory install, I know everything is supported and working. They don't mind using Windows, so at this point I don't really care.
What about people who bought new PCs/laptops and didn't have a choice in getting Vista? My mother and my wife's sister both needed new laptops, and Vista was the only option without getting one of the more expensive "business" class models. Depending on how Windows 7 turns out, I'd sure as hell like to take advantage of this free upgrade offer on their laptops. Both machines have fast, current processors and 3GB of RAM, yet they take forever to boot to a useable desktop despite being brand new with fresh installs. My Vista experience thus far has not been impressive.
That is precisely why DNA evidence should not be treated like the Holy Grail of crime investigations and the crux of a case. A person's DNA at a crime scene should be in addition to a motive and means for committing the crime.
You set up a group who have no job other than to find and punish people who abuse their authority. Prosecutors who are hired specifically to only prosecute other prosecutors, basically.
And who makes sure that those people are doing their jobs/not abusing their positions? Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
It takes a lot of time to develop an application as usable and stable as iTunes.
If you're talking about the music store, yes. If you're talking about the PC application, I'm going to have to turn my head to the side and shoot my green tea out my nose. At least on a Windows box, my experience with iTunes has been forcefully installing Quicktime and hogging system resources like a bloated bitch.
Not to be overly optimistic, but I would guess that if/when they put this plan into action and start disconnecting innocent people, the ISPs will be the ones to start getting taken to court. I have a sneaking suspicion that if (hopefully before) that happens, ISPs will be very reluctant to go along with their plans.
Strangely, I'm finding this to be the most enjoyable period of time politically here for the last 2 years. It's so quiet and peacefully and no new stupid legislation!
Dare I say it? I want it to last longer!!
Oddly enough, I feel the same way... I'm of the opinion that the more time they spend bickering, the less damage they do.
Oh but I think it is the fault of the record companies for burying the public's senses in said Top 40 pap. Most people don't have the musical sensibility to even realize that what they're listening to is generic crap, let alone seek out the independent bands and such. They also don't much care where they get their music, or who's really making it, as long as it doesn't grate their ears. Remember, by definition, half the population is "below average".

For great justice.

Guess it would have been a pretty lousy movie if all the shark did was eat seals though......
I think I saw that movie on Discovery Channel once.

Scandalous! I propose we henceforth refer to this atrocity as NASA-gate!

What mean "we", Kemosabe?
s several others have said already: meet the new boss, same as the old boss.
I guess I should get on my knees and pray we don't get fooled again.
...Okay, I'll sit down now.

Add another Ubuntu vote here. My fiancé's parent's laptop got messed up somehow and wouldn't boot. They didn't have anything on it and basically just used it for web surfing. Rather than repair or reinstall Windows, I wiped it and put Ubuntu on there. Installing the Adobe version of Flash is simple; It's right there in the repository. It also boots much faster than Windows XP since it's an old laptop. My future father-in-law now loves "Not Windows", as he calls it.

Most of the developed world is way ahead of North America when it comes to Internet access.
I have to agree. Slashdot's system is by far the best one I've seen, despite the fact that it isn't perfect. But then, what system is?
