I believe that you are simplifying the matter a little too much by comparing someone guilty of mass murder and a company guilty of exploiting a monopoly.
If a person is guilty are murder then the law has specific punishments for your crime. Only the actual person who committed the murder gets the punishment.
When a company is punished for monopoly practices, it is far more difficult to decide the punishment. There are no standard punishments that you can give a company, you must choose the punishment carefully in each case. The ramifications of any action on large company such as Microsoft has far reaching consequences.
The fact is we do not know the nature of Microsoft's punishment. It could be a break-up or it could be changes to Windows. Or they may drop the case entirely like New Mexico. And even though the justice department may want an injunction, they still have to justify it to the courts. And the courts will want good justification with something that is liable to have as large as impact as an injunction against Windows XP. Some very large companies are already committed to XP.
I don't see the problem with the current ARIN database. You need at least a/22 (or something like that...can't remember offhand) to even apply PI-space... so it's a rather good assumption that only ISPs and other businesses and educational institutions will be listed in it.
It is not necessarily a good assumption that only ISPs, businesses, and educational institutions will be listed in the ARIN database.
Though it is true that minimum IP block size allocated by ARIN is a/20, an ISP must provide SWIP/RWHOIS information for any IP block that are at/29 or greater in size which it allocates to end users. This information is necessary as proof of utilization when applying for additional space from ARIN.
As other posters have stated, the GRAPE6 system uses custom special purpose hardware, but one should also keep in mind that 32 Teraflops is the theoretical peak performance. A complete GRAPE6 system is supposed to have a peak speed of 100 Tflops.
If you read the paper at http://astrogrape.org about the prototype GRAPE6 system then you would have notice, according to the paper, when they actually did a simulation of the evolution of a galactic nucleus containing triple massive black holes, they only got about half the theoretical peak performance of the prototype.
However, Linus gets special privileges since he happens to be "an alien of extraordinary ability" , meaning that he has world-class skills that would not easily be found in the local (US) population.
I get to tell the MPAA that I don't support their practices, and never will, and I get to tell them in the way that bothers them most -- by not giving them money.
I applaud the fact that you are standing up for your principles by not buying DVDs. But, unless you aren't purchasing or renting videos or going out to movies, then the MPAA is still getting your money. If you aren't buying DVDs but buying videos then do you think the MPAA is going to care?

Forecasters have known for decades that big cities trap the sun's rays, holding the heat in asphalt and concrete and staying consistently warmer than their suburbs.
It isn't just talking about how a city might make things warmer/colder in the area around the city. That may obvious.
But the new study suggests that cities "can actually create weather, churning out thunderstorms that dump rain hundreds of miles away." Which I don't think is so obvious.
And I thought the Swiss were so big on ergonomics. This thing looks great, but personally, I'll sacrifice a keyboard to the God of Pepsi long before I'll sacrifice a wrist to the God of RSI:)
Read the review more carefully, the thing is made in Germany ("but actually manufactured in Germany by a company called Kota Technologies") and only compared it with a Swedish not a Swiss design. ("with a design straight out of '70s Sweden.")

The Eroded Self

The article mentions Monica Lewinsky love letters, the DoubleClick incident, as well as many cases of Internet and email monitoring by companies.
Though maybe not a true example of the "Eroded Self", I think that baiting.org which entices certain groups of people to send them Instant Messages out of the blue, manipulates and torments them then posts is certainly more amusing than most of the other examples mentioned in the article. Another poster, also mention the dick list at the www.disgruntledhousewife.com website.
Does anyone know of other funny examples of the "Eroded Self"?
Personally, at first I thought it was eyes were to tired from reading to many posts about hot grits, natalie portman, and various other things that my mother told me would make me go blind.
But upon a lengthy and closer examination, I noticed that the GIMPs eyes moved.
And after some clever deduction, I realized that it must be a GIF animation.
Then, I thought GIMP is a GIF... that's kinda interesting, considering the GNU Project's position of GIFs. Not really a big deal in my opinion. But still kinda funny.
And there is definitely something sinister behind those moving eyes...
To the best of my knowledge, the GeForce meets the original published specs because they didn't publish any specs until the chipset was actually available. Nvidia learned something from the whole TNT thing.
But one thing to note, Nvidia doesn't actually make cards unlike S3 and 3DFX. They just sell the chips to OEMs, and the OEMs set the final clock speeds, memory used, etc.
Because the Starchild skull shows so much deviation from the human norm, we can confidently expect DNA testing to prove it is one of three things: (1) a pure alien Gray type; (2) a Gray-human hybrid; or (3) the most bizarre human deformity since The Elephant Man.
How are they going to prove it is a pure alien Gray type thru DNA testing unless they already have some pure alien Gray type DNA? It seems to me at best DNA testing can only prove that it is either a bizarre human deformity or something not entirely human. DNA testing can't prove the existence of extraterrestrial origin since we are don't know what exactly extraterrestrial DNA is.
In fact later on in the section Where are We Now?, the authors write:
Without going into details that might draw unwarranted attention to the testing process, both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA testing will soon be getting underway. Results are expected to be in hand by the end of October or early November at the latest. What those results will say is that the DNA of the Starchild is either entirely human, or not entirely human. It will not say the Starchild was a Gray, or even a Gray-human hybrid, because there is nothing in current DNA data banks to establish such a connection. We can logically assume a result of "not entirely human" is evidence of extraterrestrial origin, but we will not be able to prove it.
The confidently expect DNA testing to prove becomes "logically assume" to be "evidence of extraterrestrial origin".
The name of the project, Starchild, and these statements seem to indicate a strong bias to theory of extraterrestrial origin before any real hard evidence was presented to them. The authors also seem to believe that "not enirely human" must mean alien/alien-hybrid. They don't seem to present any other possibilities for "not entirely human". Surely, there are other theories could be found for a "not entirely human" origin other than extraterrestrial origin. Extraterrestrial is the obvious explanation. But the authors don't mention really even the possibility of others. The do mention the Cholula gods. Who's to say that it isn't divine intervention? I certainly can't rule out anything, not on the information that has been presented so far.
I agree with you, it's nice to see to nVidia added some hardware MPEG 2 acceleration with the motion compensation but I would've like to see some more support for DVD playback. HDTV support is cool but I don't see myself getting one any time soon. I think that a full MPEG 2 decoder, that would be a little excessive since that would mean adding an audio output to the card. But who knows what the next generation chipset will bring? Or what the some card manufacturer will cook-up?
As for software decoders, the ones for Windows don't seem very optimized. And Linux decoders are still being worked on. For those of you interested in Linux DVD, I recommend that you check out the LiViD Project and the Linux TV site.
Here's the AMD pricelist for those of you who are interested.
Uhm... not quite, the equation "AMPS = VOLTS x RESISTANCE" is incorrect. That implies that increasing resistance will increase the amps.
Ohm's Law actually states that:
VOLTS = AMPS x RESISTANCE or
AMPS = VOLTS / RESISTANCE

That's what "dogfood" bugs are. Bugs that the developers find themselves from using it themselves.
From the bugzilla keyword definition page,
"... a bug nominated as a blocker to using the product as dogfood. Dogfood is the ability for internal Netscape development to use the Seamonkey product for daily use. It worked for me in Netscape too but not in Mozilla (latest build) ... if you check the page source, you'll see that that the href looks like this:
l atest/"<A HREF="http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/l atest/</A">the mozilla.org nighly builds page</A>
<A href="http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/
It looks like the href was cut and pasted twice.

Here's another short preview at GameFan.
DirectX 6 lacks support for hardware accelerated T&L but DirectX 7 has support for hardware accelerated T&L.
Also check out Anandtech which has previews of the V4 4500 and V5 V5500.
