Well that's easy then, we'll just ban plane engines as well. Not only will it prevent fires, but it will probably put a reasonable dent in the number of planes flown into buildings!
Actually, I find the carrier is more important. Sure the manufacturer may install the software, but it is usually the carrier that reinstalls the OS and threatens account deactivation if you reinstall it again.
Actually, I have an even easier system, my friend did this at a lan party (he had his music on one machine, his game on another).
1) Buy 2 pairs of headphones (One big muff-type set and one ear-bud type set)
2) Put the earbuds in and the muff-style ones over top.
4) Hook one to the phone, the other to the computer
Sending computers is similar to sending teachers, sure they are getting a material object for nothing, but unlike food/clothing, it serves a long-term purpose.
A computer allows you to learn, and many slashdot readers will attest that they have learned just as much, if not more, from having a computer than from traditional schooling.
Now, give africa access to the internet and a list of information points (google, wikipedia, howstuffworks, etc), and you have basically given them a 24/7 teacher that will teach them ANYTHING.
Correct me if these already exist, but why are there no home-school type websites out there that have an entire curriculum based content system where you can virtually gain elementary and high school knowledge at the same pace as a traditional school without actual high school accreditation?
Set up a website that offers online lectures, explanations, example questions, quizes etc for all the 1st world country courses such as Math, World History, Science, Physics, Language (any really), Reading/Writing (video demos maybe), etc.
A website like this could not only greatly benefit third world countries, but even help out first world country students as study aids, information references, etc.
The power to help is there, we just need to learn to use it properly.
I'll second this. I take public transit (skytrain, bus, etc) and like to play games during my 30 minute bus/20 minute skytrain ride.
I'll be damned if I'm going to put my purchased game cd's into my backpack and switch them in/out while in transit!
I just want to click the icon on my desktop and play.
Nope, wrong again, it's the paper clips. Now they are not only opening your laptop for files, but unorganizing all your documents in your briefcase as well.
I don't know about everyone else, but the reason It was recommended to me (and why I recommend it to everyone else), is the amazing hardware detection and driver list that is automatically installed. When looking at other distros (slackware, fedora, etc.) I was looking up down and upside down finding sound drivers, wireless drivers, video drivers, and so on; but Ubuntu found and installed them, then ASKED if I wanted the binary ones as well!
For the average semi-tech-savy person yes, for those that don't know how to use a forum (I know quite a few), it is much easier to call someone (or even email them) and know that they are paid to help you. Company execs also prefer knowing that someone is ultimately responsible if something does not work.
Now before you start in on the "Microsoft support is crap", "no support for OEM" and "Canonical does offer paid support", I just want to say that for most users that know a little (less than power user, more than word/email), forums are pretty much the ultimate support, but there are still people who require and/or need someone they can phone 24/7 and know that person's job is to help you.
Note: I am a linux user, I use forums CONSTANTLY and the only time I use paid support is with ISP's, phone companies and Hardware failures.
Damnit, someone stole the DRM sever!
Any chance of making that server internet-facing? ;)
Hmmm, host a LAN party with girls dressed in security outfits...
You're not planner on much actually gaming going on here are you?

Every iteration of windows has been slightly slower but also better than the previous version... until Vista.
I guess we're just going to ignore Windows ME here?
This is not the first time they've made this mistake.
HP lost it's bid to trademark "Personal Computer".

So, slashdot voting time!
Who wins epic fail of the year?
1) GNU (Encryption Bug)
2) VMWare (License Bug)
Not necessarily true, there would be the occasional video of the first stupid thing someone did...
Just wait a week and someone will create a kml file that will let you watch them in google earth.
Why shoot down a satellite?
Because shooting it up would cost more

Problem solved!

Isn't Ubuntu BASED in Africa?
Seems an easy thing to get their hands on?
Can you imagine a Beowulf cluster of 50,000 286's?!?

Damn, my mod points are gone. How did this joke get "Insightful"?
You guys seriously missed a Monty Python joke there...

Does this also apply to debit cards?

damn, sorry about the cut/paste error, 3) should be getting it back to USA (my bad)
So basically, if you want to visit the Olympics, you have to: (PPLE == PDA/Phone/Laptop/Etc)
1) Get your PPLE past TSA on your way to china
2) Encrypt all traffic on your PPLE while in china
3) Get your PPLE past TSA on your way to china
Nice to see the US is warning you about 1/3 of the problem areas...
Did anyone else read that as "Verified by Vista"?
Goddamn near had a heart-attack expecting some "... bank's website only works with vista" B.S.
