While your comment is pretty spot on, the science of earth in the Bible does describe something different than what we know it to be today. Flat Earth.
Admittedly, I only scanned the wikipedia article, but I didn't see any scriptural references.
Additionally, in the bible, the blue we see when we look up is water, kept out by a dome over the earth. (Genesis 1:7, Genesis 8:2)
What we do see is water. Water droplets. Or possibly a water canopy.
The bible also contradicts itself in several places. In the first two chapters of the bible, there are two accounts of Creation. Most people only think of the first, the 6 days of creation. In the second, God makes man, then the animals, followed finally by the woman. Each creation account is supposed to tell us how we as humans relate to the world around us, and the second, also about how men and women relate to one another.
Thats not a second creation account, that was allowing Adam to name the previously existing creation.
In the New Testament, three of the gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke (which are merely rewritten copies of one another), say that Simon of Cyrene carried the cross for Jesus. John explicitly denies this saying "Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha)."
So if three different newspapers are covering the same event, and three different articles are written, are they merely rewritten copies of each other? Also, John says that Jesus went out carrying it. He didn't say he carried it all the way there. This is easy to reconcile. He started off carrying it, but the exhaustion got to him eventually, and they impressed Simon of Cyrene to carry it the rest of the way.
Some gospels include details that other gospels do not. It depends on what the author felt was most important.
There is no way to reconcile these differences and say that each and every word of the bible is literally and historically true.
Of course its not going to all literally and historically true. Did the parable of the good Samaritan actually happen? No, it was a story that Jesus said to prove a point. But I would argue that more of it is literaly and historically true than you seem to believe.
The only way these can be handled properly is to admit that the bible was never intended to be a history or science text, but instead is to be a book that is a spiritual and religious guide,
I agree that its not supposed to be a science text, but I would argue the times where it touches upon science and history it is accurate.
The word "theory" in common parlance is an unsubstantiated guess. In science, the word "theory" means hypothesis supported by a large body of evidence, where the truth value of the theory is considered very high. Evolution is a theory that has so much evidence in its favor that the IDers are essentially nutcases who can't read or reason properly. It is the IDers that try to equivocate the position by using the common parlance flavor of the word "theory" when discussing science.
/opens can of worms
So what about String Theory. Is that a Theory? Or is it a Hypothesis?
D is not science. It's an argument (against no-one) about who created the universe and/or something in it. The how of the matter is not considered.
The 'how' of the matter is not considered, because that generally considered an advanced subject, like figuring out a working theory for FTL travel. We're just not at that point yet.
Scientists don't care, since they want to know how.
Well ID-ers want to know why also, but it seems to me the wrong questions are being asked. Its like if someone asked how a cup of coffee was on a table, and someone asked how that cup of coffee came to be...
"I brewed it this morning"
"No no no! What natural forces came into play so that this cup of coffee appeared on the table?"
"Well I moved my muscles and put this coffee into the cup. Then I again moved my muscles and put some water into a pot, and lit the stove underneath it. Lastly I poured the hot water into the cup"
"That sounds too much like magic."
And worst of all, the ID-ers misquote, misread, and malign the Bible in all of their stupid shenanigans. The Bible says the Earth is round. So does NASA. The Bible says that the Earth was created in 6 distinct phases. So do most geologists, biologists, and anyone else with half a clue about science.
Agreed.
Only the idiot ID-ers say that the Earth was created in 144 hours, and they do so without any biblical backing. These people deserve the verbal beatdowns they get. They are stupid zealots.
Sounds like you're thinking of those who believe in scientific creationism, not ID-ers. I'd like to think there is a difference.
They sold ice-cream from their website. It was also availible in stores. I remember liking they're flavors. They don't seem to be around anymore. Anyone remember them?
If I'm going to have to put up with people making laws which govern my life based on their whacked out beliefs in some man with a beard then I'm perfectly within my rights to point out what a stupid , stupid, stupid thing religion is and do what I can to prevent idiotic belief systems interfering with my otherwise logical and scientifically controlled life.
But you see, you are stringing together two things which aren't necessarily related. First, having a belief system, and second, imposing that belief system on other through the passing of laws to that effect.
Now if someone is bothered merely by the fact that someone holds beliefs differing from themselves, maybe it just a matter of being insecure in your own views? People frequently use the beliefs of others to validate their own set of beliefs. If it makes someone uncomfortable when those around them hold different beliefs, maybe they didn't really secure in their own beliefs to begin with.
any sense of right and wrong includes punishment. however, the punishment must always be less severe than the crime itself. otherwise, you do not have justice, you have revenge
What if the punishment is equally as severe as the crime itself? Taking into account mitigating factors, making a punishment less severe than the crime isn't justice, its a slap on the wrist.
What lengths did the Egyptians, so often given credit for advanced medicine for their era, go to to save a ruler considered divine?
Who's giving the Egyptians credit for advanced medicine for their era? Most of their medicine was a mixture of superstition and quackery. They'd cover open wounds with poultices composed of human fecal matter(among other things).
However, the questions that are asked in philosophy cannot usually be answered empirically. Neither by observation or experiment, nor by reference to faith or revelation, but rely instead wholly on reason. This should not be taken as evidence that the questions cannot be answered. Logic, for instance, is based purely on reason and it springs, as do so many other fields of study, from philosophy. It also answers a lot of questions.
I think the rub lies in the fact that the answers that philosophy provides are based on incomplete data. Reason based on an incomplete or faulty set of data will yield bad answers. Garbage In, Garbage Out. Its very tempting to think that with philosophy you are actually going anywhere, when you're merely spinning your wheels.
I've never owned a gaming console.
I almost bought a wii a few months back but decided not to after I found out it doesn't play DVDs, which is absolutely ridiculous. I'll buy one when ver 2 comes out.
Do you happen, by chance, decide on what car to buy by whether or not it cleans dishes? Just asking.
So, we can start drafting laws regarding Faster-Than-Light travel speed limits? No ships above 55c?:)
The thing is we know so little about human sentience and corespondingly robot AI, is that any debate at this point, is well, pointless.
Something I've been kicking around in my mind, and I am sure I am not the first. Not even sure if this would be desirable, but instead of the binary True/False, based on the presence of electrical impulses, how about values based on the different wavelengths of light? So instead of binary at the base, you could base 10, base 100, base 1000 numbering system and more. The only obstacle I can think of would be the logic operators, and of course the hardware.
Thoughts?
I always found it funny that the word of god has different versions...I mean, I would think god would make himself quite clear in what he means if it is so important that we follow what he says...
When you versions, read translations. Unless you can read the original hebrew, greek, and aramaic. But then again, not many do.
What I don't understand, is why people tend to quote a translation that was done a few centuries, and doesn't account for the fact that 'thee' and 'thou' has fallen out of common usage.
Autism isn't something a person has, or a "shell" that a person is trapped inside. There's no normal child hidden behind the autism. Autism is a way of being. It is pervasive; it colors every experience, every sensation, perception, thought, emotion, and encounter, every aspect of existence. It is not possible to separate the autism from the person--and if it were possible, the person you'd have left would not be the same person you started with.
So what would happen if autism no longer colors every experience, thought, emotion, encounter, and aspect of experience? It would be like someone who always wore dark tinted sunglasses suddenly took them off. Is the person changed? Yes. But people constantly changed, whether for better or worse. People don't cease to exist because they change, do they?
Now if you point was, that people were assumning that persons with autism had no worth unless they were cured of their autism, then I could agree with that. But then again, I think everyone has worth.
Zelda - Wind Waker - got to the last castle and had to break for a few weeks due to school. Came back and I have no idea where I was or what I was supposed to do. And the timed side-quests (bring a bottle of special water halfway across the world in $RIDICULOUSLY_LITTLE time) were so annoying I didn't bother. Did anyone EVER figure out how to complete the 'flying platform' ? Your leaf won't stay 'whole' long enough, no matter how many mini-typhoons you catch.
The special water trip required the teleport song and some planning, but it is possible. As for the flying platform, where in the game was that? There are a couple of areas that could fit the description.
He might not actually have had trouble with Tactics Ogre for GBA, he just might've gotten bored with it. The problem is, everyone has too much HP, and weapons don't do enough damage. Its like playing the game with everyone equipped with NERF weapons.
This is an absolutely amazing project. Forget the space program; forget SETI--if this thing works as designed, pure science will gain more in 2008 than it did in the previous decade.
Well of course! The Supercollider Secret Project doubles the research output at the city where its built!
Now, God probably would've killed Jephthah for not keeping his word, but, based on other Scripture about the character of God, I think that's what God would've preferred. I doubt he was terribly happy that the daughter was killed especially given the prohibition God put on that sort of thing as mentioned in the post you quoted.
Also, Jephthah's daughter wasn't killed. She went to work at the tabernacle.(precursor of the temple that was in Jerusalem). If she'd died, it would been hard to receive commendation every year.
At which point I'll retort: 'Fine, are you wearing underwear of mixed cloth ? Don't you know that that is a horror in the eyes of the lord ?' Then they'll say: 'Ah - but wait. You have to skip that passage.'. 'Working on a Saturday ?'. 'That too.'. 'Oh well fuck off then, you can't get your story straight.'. It's mindblowingly frustrating.
You realize that was part of a contract that God made with the Jews. It doesn't apply to Christians, different contract, different rules. Clothes of mixed clothes, the sabbath, kosher laws, etc, no longer apply.
and sacrificing even your family members (by burning them, none the less) if your God asks you to...
Do you realize thats the one thing they were told not to do. That is sacrifice their children, by fire, or any other means. Mostly, because all the neighboring nations were doing the same.
And to be fair, most of the time it was other nations attacking and raiding Israel, not the other way around.

I wonder if it be a better deterent to mark such games as J for 'Juvenile'? Or would that just confuse people?
