This is very important because Windows puts data everywhere. In pagefiles, in the registry, in the NFS journaling information, in history lists, in the prefetch profiles of executables..
The list goes on and on.
Most of these files are in the Windows main directories and cannot be moved off to a drive that you mount when the system is done booting.
Whole disk encryption avoids all this trouble and is thus a lot better for all non-expert security users.
The article is silly. I mean most exploits are going to have a trojan running on your machine via exploits, usually with keylogging and other nasty tricks. The only thing you can stop with two browsers is the spread of cookies or activex plugins tied to your browser. The rest are going to be active regardless and will be collecting information no matter what program you are using.
The only way to be safe is to use an up-to-date browser, (and lets say anything not-IE). And if you have Firefox, look into AdblockPlus, and NoScript. If you don't want cookies to bother you, set them to this-session-only. And lastly, Firefox has a lovely "Clear private data when closing Firefox" option if you want it.
The answer is of course simple. Make your passphrase a quote from a movie. That way, telling the officers would be a prohibited public performance, i.e. it would be a crime to tell them. Then plead the no-self-incrimination law.:) After all, we don't want to make the MPAA unhappy right?
Every time I read about DRM being dropped (ha!) I am hopeful that Big Media finally understands that you shouldn't go out of your way to piss of your customers.. Then we get more news blurbs like this../shakes head
1. You can play HD content on Windows Vista w/o DRM in full HD resolution.
Like what? Trailers of movies I buy? (Getting to that in point 3) Or already pirated content?
2. You can record your own HD videos from various utilities and have them play in Vista fine.
I'm sorry, I'm a regular consumer. I don't own a $15,000 HD digital camera. I'm also not *brace yourself* Bruce Willis, so I won't be making Die Hard 5 myself. Besides, if I make content myself, I will already know how it ends.
3. The only downscaling that could occur is if you attempt to play legally purchased,...
THIS is the main method of how honest people get their content. So THIS is the one thing we should really look at. I own a pretty expensive television, which can show HD stuff. It is however not HDMI compliant. So should I go out and buy another really expensive set? And just dump a perfectly working one? (!", but not getting HD quality when you legally pay for it is 99% of the issue regular consumers will face, so the article is very well justified.
Somebody saw it fit to tag this article with 'getamac', but this Ars Technica article explains that it won't be long before Apple goes the same way.
The only way this can be stopped is for consumers to NEVER buy HD content. That said, I find DVD to be high quality enough. I can still enjoy a movie even if it's being played from a crappy VHS recorder.
A democratically run MMORPG? Have you seen the Warcraft forums? 100% of the userbase will be screaming "NERF!" about all the other classes in the game.:) There can be only one captain on a ship, is what I say.
Just as an afterthought.. what would happen if Blizzard would GPL their software? Obviously they would remain in control of the artwork and such, so nobody can start running their own little World of Warcraft. But what would it mean for other MMORPGs out there?
It's not such an insane idea really... look at the Unreal engine which gets used in dozens of other games. Would it improve or destroy the MMORPG market? Would Blizzard go bankrupt or be able to buy even more solid gold humvees?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is a squirrel. A squirrel is a mammal that lives in trees. But this squirrel lives in my garage. Now think about it; that does not make sense!
Why would a squirrel, an eight-inch tall rodent, want to live in my garage, with a bunch of broken sensors? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with patents? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with patents! It does not make sense!
Look at me. I'm a judge presiding a major patent case, and I'm talkin' about squirrels! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If squirrels live in my garage, you must acquit! This judge needs a rest.
In most countries standard mail is protected by law for privacy invasion. In a lot of countries email is also covered by the same protection. Can we add IM's to it then?
Although if email and IM's are basically 'any electronic communication', why not put the phone under it as well?
This sounds a lot like astroturf. Surely there must be bad things about it you can mention? I haven't come across a single piece of software in my life that is without faults.
Appealing to a different audience

Steve Irwin Dead

· Score: 1
While I've seen David Attenborough's documentaries and have several of his books, I do think Steve Irwin has a great passion for animals too. You have to keep in mind that times have changed nowadays and he was targetting a different audience. He might seem a bit of a clown, but he appeals to the current young generation. Afterall, I don't think most youngsters have any idea who David Attenborough is, so it's clear that his style does not speak to the youth of today.
I'll repost the comment that I wrote on the Ars Technica forums. This in reaction to somebody who said that Piracy == Evil, and that if I don't want to pay for it, I simply shouldn't use it.
While I agree in principle, I feel Microsoft has lost the moral right to my money. My point:
I go out to buy bread daily and my town has a street with all the supermarkets right next to eachother. Microsoft is one of them. They sell bread but I don't like the taste of their bread, so I go and buy at a competitor. All is fine.
The next day I come back, expecting to buy my bread at the store I bought at yesterday, but the store is on fire. Microsoft is holding a wholesale on matches. I go to yet another competitor. All is fine.
The next day I come back, expecting to buy my bread at the store I bought at yesterday, but the store is flooded and you can see sharks swimming in the water. Microsoft is holding a wholesale on garden hose...
You'll see where I'm going at. In the end there is only Microsoft with crappy tasting bread, Apple who sells exotic whole grain Knackebrod and Linux who just stands on the sidewalk and hands out free stuff. The only reason why Apple still exists is because they are expensive, and the whole reason Linux exists is because Microsoft can't destroy their store.
In short, Microsoft made bloody sure I HAVE NO CHOICE but to use windows (I play games, yes I know about Cedega, I have other windows only programs that I need to run, yes I know of wine and reactos, stop trying to ruin my example). So I see no moral reason to hand this thug my money.
If windows ever becomes 100% pirate proof, I will head to Linux even if I have to give up gaming. I'm a software engineer. One thing Microsoft does NOT want me to do is go to Linux, find out that I cannot do certain things I _have_ to have and then make it myself. Although I do think Linux would start a tremendous growth spurt if this scenario would ever come into play.
I love truecrypt, but what I really want is boot time encryption. Boot and the first thing you enter is a password, then the OS gets booted, be it linux or windows.
There are ways to really compress any type of data though.
Take this number 141592653589793238462643383279. I can compresses it very well: [the first 30 digits of pi after the comma]
Ok, not so much compression there. But lets keep in mind that the definition of pi says that there are no repeating sequences in pi. This also means that ANY sequence can be found in pi. That means that the ISO from Vista is hidden somewhere in that sequence. The problem is knowing where.
Say that I have a databank here at Compression-U Inc. This mighty database holds the number pi up to bazzillion digits. Via a very easy and quick algorithm I can find certainly sequences in that number. Now let me find the ISO for Vista for you.
[4.2gb of digits, starting from digit 2^383715-1 of pi after the comma]
There you go. I might even include the formula of how to calculate pi with it, and still retain amazing compression.
So in short, it _can_ be done, it's just very time intensive.
Well, it goes without saying that they won't ship with Vista. This will add to the Linux market share significantly, even though there are no profits generated by putting linux on those laptops. But it will hurt the graphs though. The PR department will hate it.
Look, after the various horrendous stories about Paypal (http://www.paypalsucks.com/) could we FINALLY get a worldwide viable alternative to Paypal?
I cancelled my account with Paypal after they decided to freeze the money people were donating for hurrican Katrina on somethingawful.com.
However I still cannot pay everywhere with a creditcard and to be honest, I'd rather not use my credit card everywhere.
PLEASE come with an alternative service Google, and one that I can use with my bank in the Netherlands please, since you have worldwide offices anyway.
**Beatle-Beatle is a user who spams slashdot with crappy outdated submissions to try and get linked as much as possible to his crappy site so that he gets more money from the banners.
It wouldn't be so bad if he was actually providing a service to slashdot users if he provided good submissions, but we get 2/3 year old stuff about how fingerprint scanners can be fooled..
In the meantime, REAL submissions get hosed. That is what pisses us off.
1) Losing good stories to crappy ones 2) Obvious link whoring

Damn it America, if you're going to start another war I want nothing to do with you anymore!
Afghanistan is now the #1 producer of cocaine and cannabis.
Iraq has over 1 million civilian death by now and is close to complete anarchy.
And now Iran?
Do the specs come with a 'Click here to buy a license for $0'?
I.e. can I use it in an open source program, or is it hindered by a license that prevents me from distributing it because I can not re-license them?
This reminds me so much of the Fluorescent Multilayer Disc (FMD) that was announced in 2000, which turned out to be a scam.

p and http://www.pgp.com/products/wholediskencryption/in dex.html claim to do this, but I need an open source solution.

Does anyone know of one?

I'll start off..

Beware.. sales stop at December 23, 2005. So hurry!
Third, the obligatory comment
A thousand BSODs a thousand times faster!
Looking at the new Xbox BSOD, I think they're now going for quality of quantity. So instead of a 1000 normal ones, you get one really good one.
