  2. Politicians only care about getting reelected. on Politicians Wising up on Game Legislation? · · Score: 1

Politicians will continue to push for stupid "thinkofthechildren" laws as long as it gets them free publicity and the approval of the slack-jawed drooling masses. This accomplishes their goal of getting their name in the spotlight so they have a better chance of getting reelected, which is the only thing any politician is ever really concerned about. What I'd like to see happen is for the news media to start spinning these stories in the direction of "Idiot politicians waste time creating laws that contradict the first amendment so you don't have to be actively involved in parenting" instead of the current "Hero politician tries to save your children from the evils in the world that you're too lazy and stupid to find out about" Perhaps enough negative press about politicians wasting time on video games when there are much more pressing matters in most areas to worry about could end this discussion.

If you have a source for that, I'd love to read it. I'm not an expert in either flash memory or conventional magnetic disk hard drives, but what are you basing that upon? The fact that solid-state drives have zero moving parts certainly supports that argument, but according to all the sources I've been able to locate, solid-state memory has a finite number of write/erase cycles before failure which varies between 100,000 and 1,000,000. Most of the drives i was able to read about did include "wear leveling" and "bad block management" hardware to help avoid this limitation, but i was unable to find any direct reliability comparison between the two technologies.

Because your countrymen aren't the ones trying to kill you.

Do you believe your friends and family's lives have higher value than others? It's simply an extension of that principle. If you don't hold your family's lives in higher value than other peoples, I'm glad I'm not related to you. It would be frightening to know that I'm no more important to a family member than a stranger is.

And before you try to go into the 'I don't even know most of my countrymen' semantic argument, I believe the context in which he used the term suggested that his countrymen were those fighting alongside him.

Linden Lab may charge fees for the right to use Linden Dollars, or may distribute Linden Dollars without charge, in its sole discretion. Regardless of terminology used, Linden Dollars represent a limited license right governed solely under the terms of this Agreement, and are not redeemable for any sum of money or monetary value from Linden Lab at any time. You agree that Linden Lab has the absolute right to manage, regulate, control, modify and/or eliminate such Currency as it sees fit in its sole discretion, in any general or specific case, and that Linden Lab will have no liability to you based on its exercise of such right.
To make it short and simple for you: you can't cash it out if they don't let you, and they can create and destroy the currency at will. I know a similar provision exists in the WoW and most other MMORPG EULA's.

Actually, I am a programmer. I write battle simulation software for the Army. I create a product. That product has value. That product is NOT something that i would invest money in and expect a return on, because the product can't be expected to increase in value without more effort being put into it. You seem to misunderstand the difference between an item having value and an item being a good investment, which was the focus of my argument. A brand new Porche certainly has value, but is not a good investment, because in the future it is unlikely that its value will increase without significant effort on my part ( and according to my paycheck, that effort has value as well). In the same way, the "collection of bits on a harddrive somewhere" may have value, but it is unlikeley to increase its value without continued effort on my part, making it a bad investment.
