My work gives me a crackberry to use on the job. It makes sense because depending on what's needed, I may be away from my office/laptop for 2-3 hours at a time, and that's the only way for me to get emails. That being said, I leave the blackberry *at work*. I plug it in, lock my computer, and go home. They can contact me at 8am the next morning when I show up.

Wine doesn't work with everything. Also there is not as much driver support for linux which prevents a LOT of people from moving over to it (myself included. My sound card cannot work in linux.). Games do work through wine, yes, but they have crippled performance from what I've seen. I was looking at 60-70+fps on WoW with higher settings in vista where I was getting ~30-40 in linux at lower ones.
Every time I've tried linux there has been multiple reasons for me to say "Okay, back to windows." It's not a worthwhile system for most people, no matter what anyone may want to believe.

All games have to be played online. There won't be single player games anymore, there'll just be web based games or virtual worlds you can play single player-style or massively multiplayer style, but in either case the data for the game world will only be on the server.

That point is when I will stop playing games all together. I can't stand playing games online most of the time, especially FPS games. If there's no chance to play a game by myself, without the interaction with another player, then there's no possible way the game will be good enough to warrant my attention.

  16. Re:Seems reasonable on Apple Cracks Down On iPhone Unlockers · · Score: 1

I agree with you. One of the main reasons I went over to the iPhone is that for unlimited data/sms it was around $25 cheaper (IIRC) than the plan I had on my old smartphone.

That alone made me switch. I end up saving far more on service prices than the cost of the phone over the course of the 2 year contract. With me the contract isn't a huge deal, as A) I've been with AT&T for around 5 years and B) I'm perfectly happy with the service around my area and I have no other issues that would cause me to look down upon the service.

If the 3G model has the same pricing plan as my old smartphone, I may not bother getting that on top of my current EDGE iPhone. It's already faster than my friends 8525 when browsing the web and serves my purposes rather well, especially when the app store launches and the push service comes in september.

  17. Seems reasonable on Apple Cracks Down On iPhone Unlockers · · Score: 3, Interesting

This seems like a normal practice to me to be honest. Almost every smartphone that people will buy will come with a contract at the time of purchase to get the price lowered to a point that is reasonable. It happened with my old 8525 to get the $600 phone down to $285, and now it's happening with the iPhone to get the $400 phone down to $200. It just seems to be the industry standard, and before people start to complain about not being able to use it with t-mobile or another GSM carrier, I just want to say that you don't NEED to get an iPhone. You can get whatever smartphone comes with your service. If you want to travel with a smartphone, then you can get a different one too to put different SIM cards in and only pay for those times you use it.

Of course, even at ~4.00 a gallon, it's still cheaper than 1 venti green tea frap at starbucks, which even with a b&n discount card at the one in the store costs 4.37. Gas is 3.97 here, so if I buy 8 fraps to get the same volume, it costs me $3.20 more, which is a lot closer to a second gallon of gas than it is to another stupid frap. Gas is over 80% cheaper by volume than Starbucks is. That's one thing that's constantly annoyed me to tell the truth. People will complain about money and gas going up, but they will still spend much more money than they need to on things they don't need. Starbucks is one example, Lunches are another.

I don't think the economy is going sour as much as people are thinking it is. Yes gas has gone up, yes food has gone up, but other things are still around the same price. Now to get on topic. A lot of tech may suffer but there's some tech that will keep thriving through the "recession." Case in point, I work as a contracted for a company that makes chips for necessities (Phones, networking (I think anyway), and other random electronics) and I don't think they will suffer too much if at all. If nothing else they'll improve on current designs to make them more cost efficient to let companies that use their chips sell their products for the same amount.

I can understand changing policies about physical bullying. I can almost understand changing policies about verbal bullying. But having to concentrate on cyber-bullying would just be a huge waste of time and money. Think about this, how many times have each of you had a negative comment directed towards you? For the younger slashdotters like myself who had the internet during school, how many of those were from friends and classmates? If your school had to investigate, suspend, or expell each of those persons, how much time and money would that have taken away from the school that could have been put towards new books or other improvements? Yes, deal with physical and verbal bullying, but don't even try to deal with cyber-bullying. It would take far too much time and far too much money to even begin dealing with it.

With google joining the team with mac development it seems that other companies may join them and start to develop programs for the mac platform, or would that be too far fetched to see?
