    MS doesn't get paid for Lindows, unless you consider the setlement that change the name to Linspire.

    Also note that Walmart doesn't sell Lindows anymore (unless it is old stock), it is now Linspire.

    I will say you are right in that they have to put an OS on it to keep MS from calling it a naked PC, but like another poster said, freedos and other cover that. They are trying to find something easy for the end user.

    This is getting better, many mail servers will use TLS (same protocol as SSL for the most part) for the communication between servers, and dozens of mail servers is a bit more than reality. Some ISPs may have 2-4 servers it will pass through internally, and then the next ISP may have 2-4.

    I have administered SMTP servers for small businesses and small to midsize ISPs for 10 years.

    The antenna tuning is not going to be much of an issue.

    The channels are actually 22mhz wide, spaced at 5 mhz intervals. This is why channels 1, 6, and 11 are best.

    Channels 1-11 are authorized for use in the US. Channels 1-13 are for most EU contries (a few only allow channel 4 I believe (France and Spain). My information is a few years old.

    14 is Japan and I think one other country, and it is again the only channel availible.

    Didn't stop a jackass from pulling in 25 yards in front of a 24' panel truck I rented while moving, then slamming on their brakes. This was on a nearly empty freeway at 65mph.

    25 yards was enough to slow and change lanes, but not with a lot of extra room.

    I can't say for sure, but I was a network engineer at one of the largest hot spot networks, and I do a lot of work with SIP.

    If you traversed from multiple access points within the same 802.11 network it would be fine, but if you have to get a new IP address, your call is over.

    I seemed this to be more of an Apple thing than PC, as the PC drives were double sided. I seem to remember some companies making special square hole punches to make the lineup easier as well.

    Every time I have seen this in a comment it really takes me back.

    As far as RF is concerned it is the doppler effect.

    This is a matter of the rate at which the distance between the phone and the base changes, so think simple trig, and it is quite possible. If the plane were flying a circle around the tower it could have a doppler effect of 0.

    I was under the impression that TiVo pulled out of the UK market (but still supports existing units) some time ago. On the other hand, I read that they were planning on reentering the market verys soon.

    I assume you mean rf modulator, as a tuner is fore recieving and recording.

    I have never seen a DVD player with an RF out. Not my over 5 year old JVC ($350 at the time), or a recent $150 sony.

    I can't remember for sure, but it possible the DVD/VHS combo I purchased as a gift a few years ago might have had a modulator

    Yes, you can setup a manual record in the TiVo to do it, but it defeats the purpose. With the TiVo you set the shows you want to record, and then don't worry. The networks rearange the shows, no problem. Now they have this messed up scheduling and we are back to doing things the VCR way.

    I have a dual tunner TiVo, so fortunately it doesn't affect me much. My TiVo has also been hacked to add soft padding, but it can only extend a show, not shrink it.

    This is already being done. Simply hack a TiVo to allow real time viewing of MPEG2, setup a Linux server to recompress the video for broadband, and go. If you have as much money as this product targets you can even Slashdot DSL or equivlent and a 768kbps upstream should give a viewable quality.

    Lets see. $100 DirecTiVo, $1000 linux box, $100/mo. Much cheaper than TV4ME.

    My $50 shoes last about a year, my $30k car will last 10-15 years. Thats life. These things wear out, and it cost more to make new ones. On the other hand, if I don't wear the shoes, or keep the car in the garage and only drive a couple miles every few months, still change the oil, etc, it could last 100 years. I have control of how these things wear. Pretty soon my 1974 BMW will be running again as well.

    The last book I bought shouldn't wear out. I have been to university libraries where they have books hundreds of years old, and if treated right, will last hundreds more.

    Books and software are in the same category. If I buy the rights to the text or code (binary in this case, not source), they shouldn't be taken away when a company goes bust. Otherwise they should make it a subscription, and price it acordingly.

    The Internet2 is very poorly named. It isn't a new Internet, but just a high speed network connecting the member universities and other organizations.

    These Universities are also connected to the Internet (I don't say Internet1, because that would give too much value to Internet2's name). The same IP addreses are used, so Internet2 is just an exapnsion of the Internet, it is just restricted in which traffic it will carry.

    The commercial Tier1 providers already have similar if not more bandwidth than the Internet2 network in many places. The speeds are largely a factor of use and exclusivity.

    A few years ago I was downloading Debian upgrades with a laptop at an Internet2 university. I ran traceroutes and found a number of FTP servers reachable over Internet2. I was able to download from several in parallel for around 30 megabits. A year latter, at a very well connected ISPs main office, I got nearly 50mbits on a similar download.

    The MPAA can troll the offending Internet2 hosts from their Internet1 connection just fine.

    The showcases and such are recorded, but in the US it is usually at 4 or 5 am, and I don't think it will preempt a recording for it.

    For a moment I thought, oh, middle of the night here, primetime in the UK, but the time difference is 5-9 hours, in the wrong direction.

    I have been using a Tivo since May 2000, and never, never, had anything like what you are talking about.

    Digium does something like this with Asterisk, but they require all contributors to the main branch to sign a release allowing them non GPL rights to the code. Everyone can do whatever they want with the main branch under the provisions of the GPL, but Digium has maintained additional rights to the code.

    They actually require REAL handwritten signatures on a release assigning them all rights to have code included in the main branch.

    Most in the community seem fine with this, as it is a great product and allowing the main sponser a revue stream seems reasonable.

    I am not a cryptographer, but the encryption support of UltraVNC looks to be very poor. I think they should drop it until they can get better, as it might create a false sense of security.

    RC4 is a stream cipher, and you should NEVER reuse keys for stream ciphers. It is great with SSL where public key encprytion is used to trade a one time session key. Reusing stream keys is why WEP sucks.

    It seems to me that the enum standard should work, and that this requires too much trust building.
    In the case of a corporate PBX, couldn't enum be used with distributed redundant DNS servers?

    I use Asterisk, it is great, and I like the idea of DUNDI, but by the time you get a web of trust built, why not just use enum?

    But with a horizontal launch you could keep the speeds down until after you achieved a higher altitude and recduced the air pressure.

    I had the SA8000HD (and it isn't new in some parts of the country).

    While it sucked, I can't say it was anywhere near as bad as this guy is saying. It was connected to a 57" RP CRT 1080i display.

    The HD channels were great, the digital channels were ok, the analog channels sucked. This was also the case with the non DVR HD box.

    Unfortunatly the HD TV was barrowed from a friend and I don't have it anymore. He has it hooked up to a SD DirecTivo and has commented that it looks much better than it did on my cable, mainly because so many of the cable channels were analog. I can see that it would probably work great on an HD TiVo, pulling all stations either from the satalite, or over the air HD. Of course, you probably can't get a satalite signal in NYC (or at least not Manhaten).

    You seem to think writing it off their taxes means the get to pass the full burden to the tax payers.

    In this case, we are talking about the corporate income tax, which is based on profits. Your Gross Revenue - expenses. If they didn't get to write that money off, they would lose it AND have to pay taxes on it.
