The stand alone TiVo's can use a network connection. If you want to on a DirecTV integrated unit (which includes the HD TiVo) it requires hacking.

This is a DirecTV limitation, not a TiVo limitation.

This is misinformation. I believe it is true in some states (maybe most), but it is not a federal requirement, and I know when I disconnected my phone service, my lines were disconnected. Not every state believes they should tell a private company (even a goverment supported monopoly) to allocate equipment to unused lines.

DSL doesn't use a circuit in the sense you mentioned. It uses the wires to your house, but as soon as it hits the CO it is routed onto a data network. Even if they have calls on the same network, the data would be slowed or delayed, but the DSL line wouldn't get disconnected.

As for BT, that sucks. Traditional phone service is very reliable here in the US.

You just made a good argument as to why this won't likely be cost effective.

We pour tremendous amounts of money into mass transit, and with the exception of some of the largest and most dense cities, it becomes a very expensive and underutilized service. I have been a user of public transportation in the past, so I am not suggesting we shouldn't have it.

I think Internet access in the library is sufficent for the lowest common denominator, and anything beyond that should be left to the private enterprise.

As for PPP, many of those are a disaster, but this seems to be a good place for it. However, the public part should be limited to providing access to existing infrastructure (poles, power, and possibly condiut).

My thoughts were that the bride and groom weren't paying the professional to wait for others to get out of her way. I lost one really good shot as a result.
