i don't agree with your comment, but i also don't agree with it being modded flamebait, because it does address an important idea.
do you live to work, or do you work to live.
i don't think its its a selfish attitude to demand a fair amount of 'me-time'.
I believe it is selfish for companies to demand that we sacrifice our 'me-time' to work unpaid overtime after we have put in a full day in the office. if they need people working my job 24/7, then that company can hire 3 people to work in shifts. why is it my problem that the company is too cheep to hire the required manpower?
my life is divided into thirds, 8 hours of working, 8 hours of me time, and 8 hours of sleep. half of my awake-time is spent working, the other half is spent doing what i want to do. if my employer expects me to work through my free time, then i expect to be pad for it.
FYI: when i go home tonight, i will do about an hour of work before i start my me time because i've been slacking off and reading slashdot while i should have been working.
Remember last year, how there was a story about microwaving a sponge for 2 minutes to kill all the bacteria, but you had to make sure it was a wet sponge, otherwise you'd get fire?
the same thing applies to your laptop, just soak it in water, then put it in the microwave for 2 minutes. when its done, your laptop should be completely bacteria-free.
I would imagine that even screaming right next to eachother would probably only make it a few feet before becoming inaudible and dropping down like the "57 octaves below..." I doubt that the sound actually started that low, but who knows...
an octave is a measurement of a signal's frequency, not amplitude. space would not change the pitch of your words, it would render them completely silent.
if the spammer is paying for PAPER to be delivered... send more! Drive up their costs and drive them out of business.
i just take my junk mail and drop it back into the mail box. let the post office pay to dispose of it. they are the ones delivering it in the first place, let them deal with it.
the young people are RECORDING broadcast television on their cellphones while they are watch something else, and they do this while they are on the subway.
and yes. i really have recorded the starcraft channel on my cellphone, while watching the other starcraft channel. its a cultural experience i will never forget.
that is very true. I wrote a short section for a 3rd-year university course reader (not a proper printed textbook, one of those crappy photocopiedand binded ones) and didn't see a dime for it.
then, I discover that the 100 page photocopied reader is selling for $50 and the school's book store......$50 for 100 photocopied pages, where none of the authors were being paid!
While i'm not a professor, the other authors of the reader were, so they just got together and started photocoping pages and handing them out to the students, free of charge. I'm not at the school anymore, so I've given up on my push to just make it avaliable online, free of charge.
it really bothers me when people try to lock up knowledge and ideas and put a price tag on it. reminds me of those signs at amusement parks: "You must be THIS high to pay these ridicules prices"
FF3 ALWAYS crashes on me when i go to youtube, and scroll down while the video is playing. this only happens on the second video i attempt to watch. that brings it down, every time.
i will try that out right now. i hope it fixes things. I really hope this works out better than that time i typed "sudo chmodd 777 / -r^^".
it makes me feel very dirty to say this, but on my dual boot laptop, fire fox 3(no add-ons) has been crashing very often in Ubuntu, but, it has been working flawlessly under winXP.
so, my options are: 1. use a buggy, crashy web browser in a rock solid OS. 2. use a rock solid web browser in a buggy, crashy OS.
if you think about it, the average age is about 80.
for the first 20 years of you're life, you are being educated. from 20-60, you are working. gtom 60-80, you are retired.
50% of your life is spend supporting the system, the other 50% is spent leeching off of it. and things seem to work ok.
if we could live longer, and extend our working years, so, say 25% of our lives were leeching and 75% were working, wouldn't we be far more productive and well off?
if we live to be 200, and we are healthy and strong through those years, there is no reason to retire at 60.
Ubuntu could be great. it could entirely replace windows for me someday very soon.
i would like to agree with you and say that ubuntu is ready right now.
and I will agree with you someday, right after I get my video files to play in full screen mode at a decent frame rate, and I can get my USB soundcard to work, and i can get my system to wake up again after i put it in hibernate, and if i can get it to enter sleep mode when i close the lid...
unfortunatly, i should not have to get everything to work. it should 'just work'. one thing ubuntu gets right is how most of it DOES just work right away. but not quite everything works yet.
i run a dual boot, xp and ubuntu. 90% of my time is spent in ubuntu, listening to music, typing up stuff, browsing the net, looking at certain kinds of pictures...
but when i need to get work done, i HAVE to use windows. i dont like it, but there just isn't a FOSS alternative for everything i need (yet)
The Haida People of the west coast or North America had pleanty, and with the exception of to potlatch ceremony, they were always at war with eachother.
the inuit people, on the other hand, had very little, starvation was common, they did not go to war, because war was a lose-lose situation, if you get hurt, even if you win, your family starves.
i spend far too much time online, typing up reports with rhythmbox, slashdot, and pidgion going in the background. but i dont even notice it all anymore, i just jump between things without thinking.
i used to be able to focus on one task for a long time. a few years ago, i could go and paint non-stop for 12 hours straight and wonder where the time went. now after 2 hours, i am fighting boredom and i have to get up and walk around, and just do something else. i now find it impossible to do only one thing for a long period of time.
but for research and learning, i find it helps to multitask, study many unrelated things all at once for an hour or so, then take my mind off it for a while and do something mindless. my brain will usually start finding (or inventing?) connections and relationships between these unrelates things.
perhaps we could start by not having the majority of pop culture targeted towards the lowest common denominator?
take CSI for example (yes, i know, junk science, inaccurate, bla bla bla...) but it uses big words that fly over lots of peoples heads (i frequently act as the thesaurus for my mother when that shows on) but it is massively popular.
if entertainment were to be targeted towards the top 50% of society, instead of the bottom half, like it is now, would that motivate people to learn and educate themselves so they can 'get it'?
what if they put on some tv shows with historical, literary or social references instead of 'who can eat the most pickled bull testicles" contests?
i'm not asking rhetorical questions here or making suggestions for what should be done, I'm just curious, would this make a difference?
one thing i have noticed is that the stupid people have far more kids than the smart people. and they have those kids much sooner.
so when you have such a strong correlation between children and stupidity, the obvious solution is to eradicate all humans with children. after we do that, only the smart people will be left, and humanity will be saved!
Self-esteem is a huge issue here, especially since other teachers never praise or complement the students for good conduct. in fact, teachers here sometimes hit the students for making an simple mistake. its extremely disturbing to see.
my students are so afraid that they will make a mistake that they won't even try. it is hard to create a non-threatening environment. the idea of a student raising a hand and participating in the class is unheard of in this school system.
the school wants me to give these speaking tests one on one, in front of all the other students. how scary is that? going through a test, and being at the front on your own? i would be terrified. I want them to be more private one-on-one tests, even in the hallway would be better. I don't want them to fear making a mistake in front of their peers, but the school won't allow it.
this may come as a shock to you, but writing and speaking are actually two different skills.
at work, more effort goes into my writing. I check things over for obvious errors before submitting things. I don't bother to do that on slashdot.
I do frequently re-state things in class. students should know some different ways of saying something. If i only teach my students about 'hello', they will be lost when someone says, "hey", "hi" or "whats up"
hmm...a meaningful reply from an AC, I do wish you were posting while logged in.
Are you familiar with the phrase, 'good writing is rewriting"
generally, the 1st draft sucks, the 1st edit makes a big difference. By the 3rd or 4th rewrite, you're sounding fantastic.
I participate in about 3 internet forums, and I write proper academic papers on occasion, as well as a good number of lesson plans. I also re-write translations, essay corrections, documents, and essays for work.
in short, I do a metric fuck-tonne of writing everyday, and when I am participating in an interned forum, I just don't care. i don't proof read, i don't edit, and i certainly don't re-write. i like to just get the ideas out. quick and dirty.
generally, if someone attacks the presentation rather than the message itself, it is because they are unable to shoot down the message they disagree with.
Photonic Switching?
is there any chance this technology could be used in torpedoes?

i can't think of a single downside...

Matlock
in Korea, only old people do that.

the problem with fair use is that by the time you win your case, your legal fees will be roughly on par with the national debt.
i don't know about you, but filing for bankruptcy is not how i would like to celebrate my victory over the publishers.

that sounds entirely plausible.

I'm sorry, i have a rare bone disease that prevents me from typing the 'W' in 'la yer'
i have a question for slashdot.
since none of you are layers, i feel that slashdot is the perfect place to seak hypothetical legal advice.
I am an artist. i have recorded several songs and I keep them on my hard drive.
what is there to stop people like me from suing the US customes agents $150,000 per song for copyright infringement?

that is simply not correct.

well, making that a requirement would certainly take microsoft out of the equasion.
comming soon, Windows: alpha

multitask doing = ad
multitask learning = good
your results may vary.
i agree completely, free speech is far too important.
I'm asking this as a more hypothetical question.
plus, we could always do this experement in some other country that doesn't have freedom. because that is not morally objectionable...
the very same way that ice cubes sublimate in your freezer, even though your freezer temperature is below 32 degrees.
