    And that's the sad fact.

    Otherwise there are some DOS 6.x that would never have had to change.

    They did what they did (handle FAXes between Kansas City and Tokio,) and they didn't need to do anything else.

    In fact, they did it years longer than anybody thought they would.

    I sympathize.

    ComCast had a problem a wile back with their modems (IPv6 devices :-) that they're still running an IPv4 network over (totally unnecessary afaIct) and some of the modems went dead after the switch because they couldn't auto restart.

    Mine was a model without even a manual switch so I was really screwed.

    I had to go without cable modem for three days because their offices were closed (and I discovered that local office isn't ADA compliant either :-(

    At least it was free. I took the bastard thing home, set it up and just about "plotzed" because it came with a windows installation disk. I don't do .exe ...

    I ended up up with a un-"trained monkey" tech-support person on the line and I had to walk HER through the process. (Talk about useless and ignorant...)

    They are running through a series of human readable scripts.

    They just don't have the OS X script or the Linux script because it would cost them money to buy it.

    The trained monkey, uh customer rep, is just going through a script and whatever its spouting in the screen is what he's gonna ask.

    I have done work for call centers on and off since the late 80s and they are all using staff to just run through human readable scripts.

    It keep their personnel hiring and training costs down to a minimum while ensuring some minimum SLAs.

    (Imagine a wikipedia reviewed ONLY by the qualified.)

    But the problem is who will PAY FOR THIS?

    Peer review is an expensive process.

    You can't just throw up a Wiki, even a secure one, and expect that people will give you their hard fought research to put up there and that others will do the work required to peer review the research.

    To answer my own question, anybody can get secure access once they PAY for access.

    The scarce resource is the editorial staff and access to 'peers.' Its not paper.

    I've been dual booting from a 10.5.1 drive since 10.5.2 because GarageBand's audio processing of effects is all screwed up.

    It introduced noise when trying the get any echo and/or reverb and generally screwed up recording from my Samson C01U USB microphone.

    Its more of a PITA than anything else. I keep spares of working environments around. (I'd've been screwed if I hadn't learned something in 30 years of doing IT. [Don't trust 'em.])

    is the job of the disk controller which takes the read (or write) request sorts the requests by the sector address, takes the current position and direction of the head positioning mechanism and performs the requests in the physical sequence.

    You may request something but other requests may get done first because the heads are positioned better.

    IBM made their money by doing that and protected it with measures that skirted with antitrust violations throughout the sixties and seventies.

    Its a kinder and gentler way of doing it and it was originally done to preserve the hardware and stop needless thrashing. That it ended up being more efficient for multi-tasking/multi-processing computers was just icing on the cake.

    for virtualty (as opposed to virtual reality which requires you to build in everything.)

    By making these things into eyeglass frames and using geo-positioning you can interpose a reactive layer between you and whatever you're looking at.

    This means great possibilities for 'non-intrusive' gesture (or bluetooth device triggered click,) capture and subsequent playback for whatever you're interested in that you're looking at.

    What I could do with something like that...

    His products either sell themselves there or screw it.

    The only reason X-Serve even exists is because customers just about created it themselves.

    All you need is to have the same sounding name (as in the SoundEx algorythm) as somebody who screwed up.

    I use a new MacBook Pro because I wanted the snazziest laptop I could get (bought in early 2007)

    My G5 iMac is still running fine and is my media server (bought in late 2004)

    My G4 PowerBook is still running fine and is my print server. (bought in early 2002)

    My G3 Blueberry iMac is still working but its getting replaced because my friend has no more use for it because it sucks too much power. (bought in 1996)

    Though I will admit that my old Mac (a 7200 I seem to remember dimly) died in 2002.

    On the other hand both my wife's Windows eMacine and my own Linux eMachines went down and needed replacement of some parts after a year or so.

    run to the 'States where they can shirk their duties and responsibilities as human beings.

    Try being a citizen who is uninsured or underinsured or who works for some company like Wall*Mart which sues the people who get some compensation from a health related settlement.

    One in eight people is disabled to some extent or other (15% according to the WHO) but we have 50+ million "working poor" people in this country who are in the same position that they were in before "Tricky Dick" dodged the bullet of people dying naked in the street and passed the buck to the employers by passing laws mandating the creation of HMOs, (those same HMOs who are now denying treatment because it not healthy for their bottom line.)

    The only one who like the current health-don't-care system are those in the 85% who can look mom-and-dad in the eye should they ever fall into the disabled 15% ... through a rifle scope.

    I am all too well aware of the dis-functional state of health-care here.
