Been playing BF2142 since January - remember the controversy with the in-game billboards for this one? Honestly, in this game, since the IGA started, I think I've noticed the ads twice. Just too much going on for me to take note of the ad. Maybe it'll work subconsciously or something. Maybe it says something about the game - I'm paying enough attention to what my squad is doing, trying to work as a team - I think the game does work well as far as encouraging teamwork - so well I don't have time to read the ads.

Back in '95 or so, a coworker got me into a wargame run by a tabletop gaming store - called something like Conflict of Nations - weekly turns, the store owner collected the turns NLT say, Tuesday by 6pm, resolved the actions, and you went into the store the next day to get the results. When you signed up to play, you were put on a phone roster, so you could call the other "country leaders" to coordinate actions, make alliances/deals, etc. Once I called a number and realized the player was some 10 year old (I was 20) - that was it, I was done - just seemed a little too creepy. Now at 33 and a parent of a one year old, I can't say I'd want 20-30 year old gaming geeks calling my boy some years from now. For similar reasons, the FPS clan I'm in (sas-clan.net) has a strict 18 and over policy for members. Some of it is perceived maturity issues with the younger crowds, some of it is also CYA. Don't want little Johnny telling Mommy he learned the f-bomb on teamspeak playing Battlefield with his "clan friends".

  7. Turkish FTW - or if drip, freshly ground on What is Your Favorite Way to Make Coffee? · · Score: 2, Informative

Turkish Coffee. Definitely my favorite, but rarely make it these days. I get mine from this site:
    http://www.natashascafe.com/
Finely ground, boil a couple times. My small "ibrik" makes about 3 espresso sized cups per batch, but trust me, that's all you need. Unfiltered too - you end up leaving a sludge at the bottom of your cup.

In regards to the original question, I've seen the coffee fool site, haven't tried starting with unroasted beans. I have had the best luck, drip coffee wise, using this:
    http://www.cuisinart.com/catalog/product.php?produ ct_id=14&item_id=34&cat_id=3
and grinding the beans fresh. There's definitely a difference to me using freshly ground vs. pre-ground. Cleaning the coffeemaker every couple weeks by running vinegar through it, then a couple carafes full of water helps too.

When the ring is destroyed, the server "resets" and we start again, now knowing alot more than when we first played. I would consider playing the game if this were the direction the game was headed. Good point - let's go one step further. What if there was the possibility, at the end, of failure. Maybe Frodo puts on the ring, Gollum doesn't succeed in biting off his finger, and ultimately, Sauron gets the ring. Everybody loses. Server reset for the next iteration. Of course, that brings PvP to another level. Naturally, you'll have the players that WANT Sauron to win...Asheron's Call has some server wide events - actually across all servers, where players had to go pvp to release the major Sauron-like antagonist (been too long, forgot the name) - players went pvp to either fight to free the evil one, or keep him locked up. IF I'm recalling correctly, all the servers freed the guy, except one, where the defenders were keeping up a 24 hour defense - it raised the question of, given player-driven events, could a "storyline" unfold differently on different servers? Ultimately, (I think admins had to come in to help), the evil one was released and the storyline moved on.

  10. Re:William Lind Article on U.S. Soldiers Hate New High-Tech Gear · · Score: 1

Basically, the kind of gear a soldier carries affects the kind of small unit tactics that can be used, and in this situation mobility is the most important thing. Unfortunately, the army is currently stuck on Second Generation tactics rather than Third Generation tactics. Excellent point. As someone who is working in this area of "Net-Centricity" for a defense contractor, the tactics question, or to make it broader, "policy" is starting to be the question now. The technological issues are getting hammered out - interoperability on the GIG, services that the GIG will provide to the warfighter - all technically possible. But now, the question from the warfighter becomes "How will this help me perform the mission better"? Well, with a new set of capabilities, you need that new set of tactics. Complicating matters to an extent also, is the fact that frequently, when a new system is fielded and brought into widespread use, the warfighter discovers ways to use the system that the designers may never have thought of.

Now let's imagine I'm sitting at my computer in the USA (let's say, pyramid schemes are illegal here - I'm not sure of the technicalities here presently), running a pyramid scheme in Entropia. Where is the scheme taking place? Is it occuring in Entropia where the money is changing hands, and thus legal? Or is it taking place where I'm physically typing in commands, in the USA, thus illegal?

I know when you travel, you're subject to the host country's laws. But in this case, not only would there be a possible case of dual citizenship (you become a citizen after agreeing to the Entropia EULA for example), but being in two countries at the same time. That's gotta complicate international law!

Games in 15 minute increments...I love that idea. Everyone knows about WoW's endgame - there is no endgame unless you're either raiding or PvPing, both of which take amounts of time out of reach for the casual gamer. How many games coming off the line are MMOPRG, with eventual large time sinks in the endgame? I just don't see how you could combine a huge epic gaming experience with 15-30 minute increments.
