It's funny to see the windows people taking such satisfaction in Linux bugs and completely disregard the time it takes from disclosure to a fix is available. Usually I've already installed the fixed version before I read about it on slashdot. It's just a matter of subscribing to my distro's security announcement mailinglist and upgrade if I run the affected software.
So in most cases, when i read about bad bugs in Linux it's 'old news'.
(Blatantly ignoring the six years it took to actually get the fix into the kernel this time)
I had such a site on Geocities. Flashing gifs, blink tags, a horrible MIDI playing in the background with no way of turning it of. Blue text on pink background and, naturally, CometCursor. And of course no meaningful content what so ever.
Don't they ever get tired of throwing these numbers around? And do anyone believe them?
If those numbers were even close to be real they would have managed to stop piracy long ago. I mean, who in their right mind will sit and idly watching billion after billion trickling out of their wallet and all they manage to come up with is some bizarre DRM schemes that never works. One would think that with such amount of money involved investing more in stopping piracy should be well worth it. Say a billion dollars or so.
Doesn't help in this case. I've had two friends get compromised in the last week. In both cases, since I was in their address book, I got V1agra spam from their accounts. The messages were from legitimate white listed Gmail addresses sent from legitimate Google servers.
Duh! Of course... And I even read TFA! Guess I forgot to connect my eyes to my brain.
I can verify this trend. Several of my aunts have switched to Gmail lately, decreasing the spam I get from Hotmail/Yahoo and being replaced by Gmail-based spam.
I have turned to a whitelist policy when it comes to Gmail. All @gmail.com e-mails go directly into the trash unless I have witelisted that particular address...

When I take a patient into my office for a consultation, about 50% react in the stereotypical xenophobic way when I shake their hands and introduce myself as their doctor and tell them my name.
This might be the reason: We hate foreign doctors. So when you introduce yourself they're going "Oh fuck... another one of those!" And the reason we hate foreign doctors is that they don't understand when they really need to.
It is not racism, it has nothing to do with skin color or anything. If you had been a carpenter or a tram driver no one would care. But as a doctor we need to talk to you. Not only that; you need to understand us if we one day is really sick, in horrible pain and speak with a dialect that's almost incomprehensible even for the locals. So when we shake hands with a foreign doctor, either his name is Singh or Jhonny, we go "Fuck!" in our mind hoping there will be a Norwegian doctor available to save us at the hospital after you have failed to understand what we try to say.
It doesn't matter how well you think you know Norwegians, or even how well you speak Norwegian. Because we have all met with the foreign doctor from hell. The doctor that pretend to understand everything, maybe he even think he does. But when you are at the pharmacy to pick up the prescription you get painkillers instead of birthcontrol pills. And you are that doctor... until you prove otherwise.

To me though, that had the privilege to watch the original "Cosmos" series in my early teens, this video brings back found memories of a man that inspired me and planted the seed of curiosity in me.
I like this video. Not for the music or technical achievement, but for it's spirit.

Why not call it what it is: a built-in system for cooling computers? A sales argument right there. People are suckers for hightech stuff in houses even if they don't intend to use it (or know what it is).

No, let me repeat that, advertising is very expensive. Go look up the numbers on Google Adsense and you'll see it's not unreasonable for every visitor to cost you (on average) $1. Assuming 10% of those people actually buy something from you (which is a very high conversion rate, more realistic would be 1-5%), and you need to make $10 sales (on average) per person, just to cover your advertising costs!
The article says that the industry peaked in 1999, then the internet came and ruined it.
One thing you didn't see all that much of, here anyway, back then was TV ads for music. Now it seems like every CD is marketed by TV ads, and TV ads is astronomically expensive.
On an average evening I can see an ad for a CD maybe 10 times. That's a lot of money. And if the album doesn't sell well for some reason (like it's just so bad that no one want it) they loose money.
I see the industry keep blaming the internet, be it pirates, internet radio or whatever, but maybe... just maybe, they should start looking at, oh, I don't know, the music they try to sell? Maybe people don't want it? Maybe people are tired of the wall of sound that they try to push today? Maybe people don't want to shell out a lot of money on a CD that sounds exactly like the last CD they bought? Maybe they don't want to shell out a lot of money on 10 bands where you can hardly hear a difference?
Maybe people don't buy their product because it suck?
In Norway someone trademarked the name "Ida" and a drawing of the now famous fossil. They sell suitcases. The problem with this is that the museum that's is in possession of the fossil can't market it self using the name and picture of the thing...
That's just not right...
I had a 'secret' site in/WestHollywood. Must have been in -96 or -97. It was completely harmless but I felt so wonderfully naughty. And of course I used all my webdesigner skills with horrible backgrounds, flashing animated gifs, blue fonts on red background... the works.

I believe it's an ongoing legal battle. I only have Norwegian links, but still: It's an obvious attempt to misuse the trademark laws to use someone else success to their own benefit.
