Ok, mine isn't terribly clever or anything, but I'll share it anyway. I wrote a little program once for the company my girlfriend worked for to monitor some servers for certain files that were getting transferred to them by mistake. They called the process "black hole monitoring" because these 4 servers seemed to be like black holes for the files. They hadn't managed to figure out what the problem was, and they didn't seem to be trying. They had her and a few of her co-workers monitoring the servers and writing up some sort of problem reports for the files. So, getting to the point, I wrote the little program and didn't know what to call it, so I named it Cygnus, after the U.S.S. Cygnus from the movie The Black Hole. See, told ya it wasn't terribly clever:)
Actually, I think things could be just fine without totally abolishing ICANN. If they were forced to live up to the democratic system that they were originally supposed to put in place, with elected representatives, everything would probably be quite a lot better. We need to toss out the current board of ICANN, elect a new board, and let them get back to doing things right. The jackasses that are running things now are the reason for all the problems.
Well, from the reviews I read, the GeForce FX did win on pure performance, but only by a slim margin. So it's not worth the extra expense when you can get a Radeon that performs almost as well, doesn't take up an extra slot, and costs less. So the FX wins in pure performance, barely, but gets spanked in the price/performance category. Apparently Tom's was just looking at pure performance.
Interesting. I had always suspected that I was at least somewhat colorblind. This is because when I would go shopping with my g/f, we would disagree on what color some things were. I went through the colorblindness test and it seems that I have mild deuteranomalia, whatever that means. It looks like I'm somewhat red/green colorblind though.
From what I had read, they try to include more than one color in the lights. For instance, green lights usually have a good deal of blue in them as well. This was supposed to help people with colorblindness. Not sure how well it works though.
something which, really, is virtually impossible to do: how do you prove a negative ("I didn't do it!")?
The same way most defendants do it. They present an alibi. Preferably something along the lines of "I couldn't have done it, because at the time of the murder I was singing the national anthem at the Superbowl."
Hence the "stupid" label. Not that I don't think greed has a lot to do with it as well. "Greedy" + "stupid" sounds about right for a lot of them. Maybe toss "naive" in there as well in a few cases that I've read about.
Most of those people don't even know what "laundering money" means. They think they're helping some guy get his money away from a corrupt government and that they'll make a nice chunk of change in the process. I think they really are stupid.
Which is why Microsoft is doing the annual fee thing now. By making the upgrade cycle a mandatory annual expense, they are trying to keep it low enough that switching to something else will be more expensive. The only way switching could be justified is if you consider savings over a multi-year period. But since most businesses consider quarterly numbers over long-term interests, Microsoft has a very good chance of continuing to rake in the cash.
Yeah, well I don't see the Bells innovating now either. Well, apparently they say they will, but only if we cave in to blackmail and give them a monopoly. How is that an improvement? Government is what you make it. Corporations with monopolies over infrastructure are much worse because they are completely unaccountable.
Hmm.. I couldn't make much sense out of that document. Not sure what those numbers mean or how they are calculated. It does show that SBC elected into PURA Chpt 58, which according to the document means they aren't subject to rate restrictions. Since I have no idea what Chpt 58 or 59 are, I don't know what effect they have on SBC. Bah, I think they deliberately try to make this stuff impenetrable to anyone that isn't a politician with both law and engineering degrees. You'd need to have the law degree to decipher the terms, the engineering degree to understand the real-world effects, and be a politician to understand that stuff without becoming first violently ill and then deeply enraged.
Yep, SBC is utterly repugnant. I happen to live in San Antonio, and I don't have a home phone anymore because I got sick of paying out the ass for it. I now have a cell and that's it. I have my own complaints about that, but at least I'm not getting raped by SBC for a phone line now.
I do know what the DMCA says about it. But it's absurd and wrong that they can wrap a patent around something that copyright law won't let them accomplish.
Maybe you should read the DMCA again. The reason you aren't allowed to crack encryption protecting copyrighted content has absolutely nothing to do with patents.
Cause then we'd have to go back to using arrows and swords and that's a pain in the ass for all involved. 4 out of 5 rogue states recommend that you use guns to kill them!
Damn, no kidding. That thing is huge. I wouldn't want to be lugging it around. Looks like trying to aim with it would be a real pain just due to the size.
Yeah, I killed a lot of hours playing the TI99/4a Parsec. I've never seen nor heard of the game since that time though. Like some others here, I've never met anyone else who has played it either. Now I know I'm not alone. Thank you Slashdot!

So this movie is supposed to take place somewhere between the middle and the end of the series or what?

Has the government prosecutors lost their teeth...
Umm, you are aware of who is in the Whitehouse now, aren't you?

Heh.. apparently someone thinks yer a $$$$$exyTroll :)
It's just not practical to think otherwise.

You guys are funny :)

Will 6.4 Tb DRAM be available in time for Doom 3?
"about:Mozilla just gives me a blue page in IE6... was it supposed to do something else?
Let's face it at $10k/kg lift costs, a ton (metric) of already orbiting feces has a value of $10,000,000.
:)
Wouldn't that be a metric crapload?
There's gonna be a million live versions of every song on Kazaa now...

I don't think it was ever deployed.
:)
Well, it sure wasn't deployed by the same personnel more than once
