Even the human brain is a storage device and to proect from that you would have to basically lock the employees in the ofice to do the work and after they're done, kill them.

  11. Well, I'm in on iPod Shuffle, Mac Mini, iLife '05, iWork · · Score: 1

Apple, you've finally sold me. I live in a one bedroom apartment with no office and no room for a full desk. The Mac Mini would be perfect for me. I can plug it into my TV and use a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and mouse from the couch. I'm completely sold. I wonder if the graphics card is poerful enough for gaming? Possibly not. Even still, as a word processor/iTunes machine/mp3 storage/IM box, this sounds just perfect. Sign me right up.

    Hot girl at the CES.

I clicked the link thinking "Typical geek standards of attractiveness. I'm sure she's fairly to modestly attractive in a dowdy sort of way. Or maybe she looks like Morgan Webb or something". Then I saw the picture. She is in fact smoking flaming hot, and I need to know what in god's name she's doing at a consumer electronics show.

Unless she's a porn star. Isn't that upstairs of the show, though?

  13. The cynical/conspiracy theorist... on Guy Game Results in Lawsuits and Injunction · · Score: 4, Interesting

...yes, I'm certain this won't hurt sales at all. Kinda like Traci Lords "leaking" the fact that she was underage in order to get all her old movies pulled (and turned into hot collector's items) with the fringe benefit of making her last and only "adult age" porno flick sell like gangbusters.

What? So I'm a pervert. At least I'm open about it.

  14. Charitable Contributions on What Organizations Do You Contribute To? · · Score: 1

I'm also looking to make my charitable contribution, but I'm not sure on the specifics (this is the first year I've had money enough to give). How do I know how much of a tax break I'm getting? What determines how much I can give? All the web resources I've checked out pretty much say "Talk to CPA", and I don't know any CPAs that will have that discussion for free. Any Slashdotters have any tips?

I think what you meant to say was:

The problem is that news companies are filled with misinformation. People need blogs to filter out the crap.

Perhaps news companies will some day be fact checked, and reliable.

    There, that's better.

  20. Packet monkeys, eh? on CEO Indicted for DDOSing Competitors · · Score: 5, Funny

Here's to hoping the term "packet monkeys" enters the lexicon as soon as possible. For some reason that made me laugh, imagining a NOC full of monkeys flinging poo at one another.

Actually, I guess that pretty much describes most NOCs nowadays...

  21. What a good question on Where Did Affordable OCR Go? · · Score: 3, Informative

My company just paid ~$1,800USD for OCR software (ABBYY FormReader). We're scanning in stacks of healthcare forms, reading the data, and spitting them out into DBF format. Why? I don't know, I just do my job. It was my responsiblity to review and demo other pieces of software, and ABBYY's was definitely the most robust. Open Source had, as the poster stated, few contenders and even fewer that had been worked on since the 90s.

I don't know what happened to OCR, but there's certainly still a need for it.
