Which sort of defeats the "low price" quality that was stated as a requirement, unless you think several thousand is a steal for a device that just needs to portably record sound. Did anyone read the article?
I just don't know how helpful it is to respond to an Ask Slashdot requesting advice on a low price portable with "Don't use a portable" or "Use a laptop".
RTFA. She wants something she can TAKE to her lessons in order to record them, then listen and archive at home. I doubt lugging a computer to thee lessons is practical.
Now will they be hiring some Linux Admins with Solaris migration and Open Source familiarity? Hint hint? Right over here, boys! *waving*
Unless of course they plan to contract it out to some consulting firms, where all the capable ones (IBM, EDS, what have you) will be grossly underbid by consulting firms using offshore admins. *sigh*
You may think phone service stinks since deregulation, but don't mess with us, because we're all you've got. In fact, if we fold, you'll have NO damn phones. AT&T - we're tired of taking your crap!
That might be worth a rent. Thanks for reminding me of it.
The first person to say "Blah blah blah why don't they make one for (generic off-brand mp3 player that supports Ogg and 40 people own)! They're just supporting Apple's monopoly!" gets stabbed in the chest.
For the rest of us, this is a wonderful, beautiful thing. I personally don't have the home fab equipment that it takes to custom build an iPod dock and stereo interface, and I LOVE Alpine components. I am a happy camper.
Wireless systems and GPS devices are the new area where sysadmins are expected to have some expertise, although lately companies have been upping their demands for more hands-on experience.
Which is fine for currently employed sysadmins, or more specifically currently employed sysadmins that have the rare opportunity to do research and put their hands on new technologies in addition to their day-to-day tasks. However, the majority of us (my experience, no empirical evidence) is that most of us are hired to do a specific task, or hired to handle a certain area. Then 90% of our time is eating up just keeping the walls from falling down, making it difficult to get up to speed on new technologies.
How are we supposed to get this high-demand experience if we're either busy doing our jobs or still looking (or both)? They don't exactly teach sysadmin in school, you know.
Actually Texas is the only place in the world (that I know of) where the law supports killing someone for vandalism or purse-snatching.
That certainly can't be true. We LOVE our guns here in Michigan. LOVE them. However, in the time I've lived here (my whole life) I've never heard of large groups of people getting together to shoot at each other, so I'm not certain how the two are connected.
Right, and the chairman of Ford would like a federal increase in gas taxes in order to drive more people to purchase this SUV. Nothing better than a federal subsidy to increase profits, nosireebob.
If I could get a PS2, second controller, and 8MB memory card for $149, I'd buy one immediately. As it stands, the combination costs about $249, and you STILL haven't bought a game, which is another $50.
Maybe the rest of you have cash reserves the likes of which I can't imagine, but I don't have $300 to blow on sedentary entertainment. Do you know what I could get for $300 across the river in Windsor?
I'm sure someone liked it. Someone liked the Crying Game and the Piano, also. I didn't like any of the above. Not that you shouldn't, just that I don't.
Not to pick nits, but your quote isn't Khan. Khan was quoting Moby Dick.
"Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!" -- Ahab, Moby Dick
Clem:[talking to himself while looking in the mirror] Hey, You're talking to me all wrong here. It's the wrong tone. You better watch it, or I'll stab you in the face with a soldering iron. Hey, does your mother sew? BOOM. Get her to sew that!
I think it would be really awesome if the whole movie has pretty much no dialogue and starts out with Samus coming onto a planet in full gear, have the character and environment development through this suited character exploring the environment, like the game goes.
Yes, I'm sure that would keep them riveted to their seats. 90 minutes of a big screen game demo. I'm bored just reading this. It'd be like sitting through Winged Migration again, weighing suicide versus sitting through the rest of this boring ass movie.
Don't mean to flame, but we as geeks have to realize that there is a difference between games, novels, and movies. Movies have to entertain in SIGNIFICANTLY less time than video games and novels have to develop plot, character, blah blah etc. They make up for it by their ability to include nudity.:-)
True, but we make up for it by having The World's Shittiest Roads. So, we can mod our cars all to hell and be damned, just to destroy our suspensions on I-96.
Can you hear the Doritos that he's shoving into his face as he watches, or do they edit that out? What about the $100 bills he's wiping his ass with? Any of that? I'm just curious.
Speaking from the middle of the 18-34 set (I'm 25) I can agree that most of us guys are watching a lot less boob tube. Partially because hardly anything worthwhile comes on (teen dramas and reality shows. And that's IT) the networks, and partially because a lot of us are pulling long hours at our jobs/universities trying to get our respective shit together, and when we get home, it's to watch the news or a freshly Tivo-ed basketball game or episode of the Sopranos. (Or Pr0n. Sweet, delicate pr0n). Then right off to sleep.
When I was in high school, I had much more free time to just veg out in front of the TV AND there seemed to be a better selection of things on (ST:TNG...BUFFY!). Cable networks are where it's at for decent entertainment.
Then of course the problem becomes the exorbitant rates cable companies want ($72.50/month for basic "digital" + HBO where I'm from. Fuck all that). But that's a rant for another time.
Thanks for translating, because I couldn't figure out if he wanted us to form an organized crime cartel or lease earlier seasons of ourselves to national networks.:)
Not to mention the fact that I wouldn't think of calling Bangalore to speak with Habib about your software really qualifies as a PRO as far as MS vs OO.org.
Hm. That's Flamebait, isn't it? OK, here's some facts. All better now?
At the same time, companies such as General Electric and Microsoft are expanding their operations in India on everything from basic customer service to high-end research and development. (emphasis mine)
You'll love it. Especially towards the end. The Evil path on whatever planet that was with the Old Ones is much more...satisfying.
I like to think of myself as a pretty callous individual, but even I was moved at some of the decisions are available to make. The writers apparently said "Why be a little evil when you can go balls out evil?" I'm surprised there were no puppy-kicking side quests.
Yeah, HK-47 provided more than one actual "laugh out loud" moment for me during that game.
Tusken Chief: (unintelligible hooting) HK-47: The Chief demands you state your reasons for coming here. Shall I obliterate him now, master?
I'm paraphrasing, but that's pretty much how the convo went. Great stuff, and the reason why I tried to take HK with me out of the Ebon Hawk whenever possible.

You mean like slashdot (Score:-1)
Cheese and rice, dude...what'd you do to get a DEFAULT posting level of -1? Slap CmdrTaco in his face?
Just curious.

But I'm bitter. Don't mind me.
EXCELLENT film. Especially the Darryl Hannah line:
You may think phone service stinks since deregulation, but don't mess with us, because we're all you've got. In fact, if we fold, you'll have NO damn phones. AT&T - we're tired of taking your crap!

Well, here's one.
Waiting for lameness.
Still waiting.
Man, what a karma hit I'm taking.
This sucks.
Wait, what if I"m being hornswoggled?
Rats.

....and the only PRESCRIPTION...is more COWBELL.
What? I'm the only one that thought that?
Yep. Looks like I won't be seeing that movie.
God, I hate you.

But can I get DopeWars for it? I have yet to meet the platform that DopeWars hasn't been implemented for...has it for the iPod?
