Glad I don't work at a place like that. At my place when it is slow I am pretty much allowed to do whatever I want (managers approval). I usually tinker around with technology that I normaly do not get to use. Quite a bit of my tinkering arond has made me a better developer, as well as introduced new technology into our existing projects to make them even better. My boss was so pleased with my "screwing around" that now he has implemented a google style "20% time" (as long as no major deadline for something) where we can do whatever he hell we want one day a week (although generally I find it more efffective saving the days and doing 4 days in a row). Can do anything from playing with technology, to reading tech magazines, reading development books THe thing my manager loved the most that I did was screwing around with solr which we ended up implementing into our flagship product and upping revenue by 15%

Oh, we also have 4 servers running 3 micro, and 1 medium. It was well worth the move, the scalability alone is amazing.

No they shouldn't. The whole reason you get a console is because it just works. Don't have to worry if your video card is good enough, if you have enough ram, if you have the right drivers installed.. etc. You just plug it in, hook it up to a tv, and put your game in. If you want upgradable consoles, then just use your pc and buy a controller.

Manage the iPads/iPhones are a complete nightmare. Just last week I had to upgrade about 80 iPad 1s from 3.2 to 5.0.1. They are work iPads but people were also allowed to use them as personal devices. This means each iPad had their corporate iTunes account on it, as well as their own. When we did the upgrades we told everyone that if they want to preserve the data on their device they had to let us know their personal itunes account login info. Of course only a couple gave it to us. For the people that did give us the info we were able to do the upgrade preserving all of the data and apps, but for the ones that didn't we just wiped the entire device reinstalled the apps that needed to be on it and gave it back. Then having to deal with about 60 whining people that all their apps are gone was a bitch but we basically told them to bad, it is a corporate device.

Not an ideal solution, but one way we got around it is that our purchasing department has their own iTunes account, then they buy and gift the app to the users. Still a giant PITA.

Perhaps move your stack of 10 pizza boxes, 20 cans of empty coke, and vacuum up the cockroaches, and you may have some room for the small composite bin I mean I'm no tree hugger but really? Although instead of making it mandatory, would be nice if they could somehow keep track of how much each person composts, and give a tax rebate based on that amount.
