    9. Intel, years behind AMD, pushes more money into its 64 bit endeavor, creating expensive chips no one buys as they opt for the more established 64 bit platform: Opteron.

    Or, you can say that it's impossible to keep the source closed up in today's world of outsourcing, irate employees and whatnot. So the best way to adapt is to keep it open so there are no surprises. ;)

    The kernel can be pre-empted by syscalls. Before if you call, say, write() to write to a file, the kernel must write to the file before anything else can happen. Interrupts have always pre-empted syscalls, but now we can pre-empt write() to execute a write() or read() for another process, or we can pre-empt it to move the mouse. Hence one reason why GUI should be faster.

    Indeed. Let's compete shall we. First we'll make sure that running water is hard to come by. Then we'll remove most traffic lights. Then we'll get rid of the FDA, USDA and EPA. Then, to really compete, we'll need to get rid of the minimum wage law.

    Are you a troll? If not, learn about what "preemptible kernel" means. I'll give you a hint: it means the GUI will be more responsive.

    Enable the preemptible kernel option before compiling, you will see GUI improvements.

    The pre-emptible kernel(you must enable this, it's off by default) will blow your mind when using a GUI. It is beyond impressive, it's like you're neo and you can see the mouse pointer before it gets to where you move your mouse.

    You can grep your hard drive many times yet still browse the web with no slow down.

    When was anything exploited with WAP? With 90% of WAP browsers you can simply send a "X-" header to make it think you're any phone number you choose, but have people abused that yet? Nope.

    You could abuse this but will this happen enough to be a problem? Probably not.

    Of course now we're talking about porn so the motiviations might be higher.

    Good question.

    The kernel has a lot to do with the GUI believe it or not. Specifically the 2.6 preemptible kernel, which is a notion which Windows has used since Win2000, speeds up GUI response time.

    That's right. India is a third world, with less safety, environmental & health protection. Corruption there is rampant.

    It is changing, they'll be at our level some day, but by then another cheaper third world cess pool will provide a cheaper revenue source for companies.

    Companies will not stop until every country has first world safeguards for their citizens.

    Then there's the aspect of outsourcing your technology. Many companies that outsourced in the 90's (Openwave for example) now face competitors who arose after their outsourced employees joined Openwave's competitors.

    Outsourcing is a short-term solution to cutting costs. It's a race to the bottom in many ways. Especially regarding bringing down U.S. standard of living in order to bring up India's standard of living.

    This, my friends, is the truth, you can quote me freely.

    Uhh the context switching, process scheudling and whatnot are Mach 3.0, the process structures and whatnot are from FreeBSD. Read the OS X story posted on slashdot today and clue yourself in.

    Opteron is also NUMA so applications compiled on a NUMA-aware OS like Linux will be faster. 64 bits provides faster searches so databases will be faster.

    After reading his horrific review of Opterons I got the picture really quick: he doesn't know his head from his ass. Naively I emailed him asking for clarifications, it has been a month and he hasn't responded yet. Aceshardware and even anandtech are much better, more thorough and actually know what they're talking aobut.

    In good times advertising will do well obviously, but in bad times, people will want to advertise for bankruptcy lawyers, credit consolidation, etc.

    Already many succesful internet-only advertising firms have become profitable after many have failed. The smarter firms have figured out how to make a buck.
