  1. But does it make calls yet? on Openmoko Phone Not Dead After All · · Score: 1

Dude, seriously. I'm not trying to troll here. Can I get some honest first-hand accounts of its actual phone, SMS and voicemail capability/reliability from any AT&T customers using this thing in the greater Los Angeles Area? Any luck with actual 3g network access would be nice to hear about as well.

Thats what I heard, however said other company would need to spend some considerable effort and money in addressing some serious hardware design flaws as well as what is now nearly obsoleted network support before the phone is once again viable as a phone.

... and with AT&T poised to roll out 4G already and rumors of already crappy service using the OpenMoko on AT&T networks before that it seemed doomed from the start. Personally I would have bought one anyway if it wasn't for the forum posts I read suggesting that the phone boots Debian great and runs anything in the ARM port but had such abysmal audio quality you could barely actually use it for a phone. Basic functionality was clearly a neglected priority. :(

Why would I - an open source advocate - suggest such a thing? Simple; Forcing people to use and learn from Linux (and thereby allowing Linux to learn from them in turn) is better than passively letting them steal MicroSoft products they can't afford which only improves MicroSoft's ability to leverage their installation base in illegally (in the US at least) anti-competitive practices. This will force MicroSoft to price their software at what its worth or make it worth what they charge.

Why would I claim to be a benevolent person who cares for the good of humanity with such apparently cruel intentions as forcing users to use Linux unwillingly? That answer is also simple but if you don't already know it then it is pointless for me to state it.

Actually if you watch enough of the DS9 episodes you get a definite feel for exactly what you're describing; The Federation was generally to the non-Federation entities seen as very much a fascist empire-building dictatorship under the thin guise of diplomacy and scientific exploration. This isn't something you see so much in the other series because the events therein are centered almost entirely around the lives of a single relatively isolated crew of Federation officers.

And they were "science vessels," but FWIW blowing shit up with photon torpedoes *can* be very helpful for scientific research. :-D (see the plot lines for Star Trek II and Star Trek III for a notable reference to those of you who don't know what I'm talking about but actually care to)

Those "training costs" arguments are at least 99% bullshit though. You ever had an office job? How many of those people really know their way around MS Office? I've got news for you - when forced to actually perform anything more than basic tasks most of those trained employees would find themselves hard pressed to even recognize the difference between OpenOffice and MS Office much less find a bit of advanced functionality from the latter that they are familiar with that isn't in the former.

The same goes for most of the rest of the so-called productivity software - "training costs" really consist of the company now being accountable for addressing incompetence where previously the existing incompetence was just ignored because everyone lies and says they know how to use Office and nobody really knows it well enough to call anyone else out on it.

So in short my point is this: everyone just fakes it anyway. They should sack up and fake it with cheaper software they'll find its not functionally different for basic features and they can't even make use of advanced features so they don't have the right to be whining in the first place.
