not everyone who partakes in Christianity (big C or little c) believes the world was created 4,000 years ago. Some of us actually believe in evolution. (Well, us non-fundies anyway.)
Having gone at one time to a liberal arts (ie...christian) college...had the major idiot during the 1980's come to speak to the student body in the chapel. Not only was he laughed at by said conservative student body...but those like myself...attempted to show him the errors of his ways. Unlike a normal rational human being...this person could not be swayed by showing him the partial knowledge he used showed the complete opposite information when he put everything together. For some reason...he couldn't tell me anything about dragons or unicorns...but was so sure about the universe being only 6000 years old.
Now...not so amazed...especially since an idiot(s) who does know the difference between symbolism & non-symbolism in literature is meant to be misled by anyone or anything which says I am right. When your premise is wrong at the outset...you keep believing a lie & do everything in your power to perpetuate that lie.
Worked in commercial broadcast radio for many years...both on the air & behind the scenes. It is finally way past the time this is done.
You have no idea how much these station owners/companies make...with the figure going up every year. Before getting out of the business...due to making more money doing almost anything else...saw more than 1 owner basically running their own local bank & printing their own currency. Think your cable rates rise like crazy? Never seen a station owner who wants a new car or house raise the rates to the point where local businesses can no longer afford to advertise.
You do have a rare business owner which tells the sales person no to the rate increase. They end up either not advertising or finding a competitor which doesn't jack up the rates to allow the owners to rape the communities they're in.
Want to know how greedy it has gotten in broadcast radio...Rush Limbaugh got $475 million in a 10 year contract...before being caught taking drugs... losing his hearing due to the drug use & having his ex-wife file against him for divorce. Don't feel sorry for any on-air broadcast station. You want to "serve" the community you operate in...quit operating your business like a banana republic.
Even as bad as the business model & customer service for satellite radio is...am willing to pay my fee every month...because it gives me what I want. 20 minutes of commercials an hour & having an underpaid hillbilly isn't something I enjoy...even for free.
By all accounts, MediaPortal is also a very nice, free PVR package for Windows.
Sorry about not including this one. Is open source & has the bells & whistles that GB-PVR has.
ChrisTV is another free one...as well as one from Germany that is only written in German. Has no English translation & with my knowledge of German almost non existent...didn't want to spend my time learning German...rather than recording whatever shows/movies I wanted.
"With the latest Media Center Edition update from Microsoft, I and many others are finding that content available on television is now completely unwatchable from Media Center. The message states: 'Restricted Content: Restrictions set by the broadcaster and/or originator of the content prohibit playback of the program on this computer.'
This has been a "feature" of Media Center for quite a long time. Discovered this with programming from the satellite that I pay the bill for every month.
On the other hand...for those who do not want to go thru the hassles of MythTV & Linux...you can download & use a free replacement for Media Center. The program is called GB-PVR. No issues with the BS restrictions of Media Center & other commercial software...since it is developed outside the US. Will run on Windows 2000+ and have not run into a flagging issue in the two years I have run it. Not only that...you can download & install user supported plugins to do anything Media Center would even think of doing.
Unlike Media Center...GB-PVR will record in MPEG-2 format & not the proprietary BS that Microsoft uses. This means you don't need a dvr software converter & the files are usable with any software which can read & use the MPEG-2 format.
NOTE: I am not the programmer of this software & am not paid to advertise it. Just been using it successfully for at least the past 2 years. With this software...you don't need to spend the extra $$$ for commercial & crippled "feature-laiden" PVR software like Media Center.
I am just wondering, but is it normal (in USA) for companies to charge your creditcard directly for subscriptions?
Companies "prefer" you provide them with a credit card...not for your convenience...but theirs. As several have pointed out...once they have your credit card/bank information for auto-pay...the can "claim" that you never canceled the service.
Not having nor wanting a credit card...I have every vendor send me a bill every month. They don't like it & it costs me a couple of dollars a month more...but the companies can't drain my bank account to "solve" their billing errors. I have peace of mind & the extra cost I incur every month gives me that extra peace of mind I would not have otherwise.
Of course, according to some pastors, that star is only a few thousand years old. It barely predates The Flood.
I'll take those pastors & raise you a Darwin & Gould & call...because my being around a few thousand years ago will trump your mistaken belief structure from the mid-19th century.;)
You have to hand it to the RIAA. That is a brilliant business model. By claiming these royalties and "holding on to them" until the artist pays a fee to receive what is rightfully theirs, the RIAA is essentially getting an interest free loan from every artist that gets net radio play. ON TOP OF THAT, the artists have to PAY the RIAA in order to be compensated for the loan (on which the artists collect no interest)! That my friends, is the best money making scheme I have ever seen. Ever. Just beautiful. From a businessman's point of view, it brings a tear to my eye.
Have to agree with your last sentence. On the other hand...what's to stop someone from setting up a web based station from some country which doesn't have issues with the RIAA & such? As long as you pay whatever fees are required for that country...is there nothing these leeches can do to you...except for that country attempting to get into whatever international money rip-off racket to screw their citizens out of whatever little they do earn???
What with the stupidly slow file copy problem, the increased hardware requirements (even if you disregard the graphics card), the DRM...
Was one of those who downloaded & installed the beta/RC's of Vista last year. The longest time I left it on my PC (2 GB of PC3200...3.08 Ghz P4...128 MB ATI card & over 500 GB of HDD space) was about an hour. That was even running down to one of the popular Tex-Mex restaurants to get something to eat & having my meal at the keyboard.
Even on my PC...it ran like I was attempting to run XP on a 386SX-20 with 4 MB of memory. Being asked if I wanted to make sure that I REALLY wanted to do whatever drove me crazy...as well as ATTEMPTING to find everything I could to shut off the eye candy to get some better response. The next thing I was waiting on was the Vista lady in the black dress with a ruler smacking my knuckles as I was trying to shut off something that Microsoft thought needed to be turned on. After that...was expecting to be pushed down the stairs in my chair...as the Vista lady glides back to her perch.
Perhaps the closest OS to running like Vista on my PC was any version of Solaris before 10.0. Nothing worked right...but I did have an enterprise-level OS to run a few pieces of software on.
A unique combination of generations of producers, lawyers, organized criminals, and the congressmen and senators that they bought have worked hard to create a virtual monopoly.
What the RIAA...MPAA & other outdated business models fail to understand is the role history will play in their demise. The prime example is that of rail & bus passenger travel in America. Any question about this...look at the train/bus routes & the cost of traveling these ways 20-50 years ago.
That's why I gave up on ink-jet printers and went with a laser.
You hit it on the head. Did the same thing about 2-3 years ago from the local big chain office supply store for less than $150.
It's only b/w, but I've bought toner exactly once over the past three years.
Finally spent the $65 to replace the toner cartidge...after using the one which originally came with the printer new. Just used it in "draft" mode most of the time & it lasted about 2-3 years. Am expecting the new cartridge to last at least twice or more as long as the cartridge which came with the printer.
If I needed to print in color frequently, I'd probably buy a color laser.
Bought an HP Deskjet 600 from Wal-Mart over 10 years ago for $200. In all that time...probably used the color cartridge twice. It ended up drying out in its case.
Except for the paper handling system on it...has trouble picking up the paper without some help...it's still usable & loaned it to my buddy to use. Before this...he would go out & buy the cheapest Lexmark printer whenever the cartridge gave out or he found that the new printer was at least $10 cheaper than the replacement cartridge. Ended up donating these pieces of crap to local charities or schools. If they don't have to pay for the printer...the new person getting the printer could afford to buy a replacement cartridge...then restart the cycle again for someone else.
Now you're telling me every little bastard in school is going to get an ipod?
What about giving me an Ipod as well. Being 45 & living in Arizona...I deserve...NO...DEMAND...for the State of Michigan buy me an Ipod too...so that I can be cool...hip & stupid as well.
I know how stupid that previous sentence sounds...but Michigan seem to be brimming over with taxpayer money to make sure their school kids have toys to be annoying with. What about giving them a "decent" education with the same money as they are going to waste with this boondoggle.
Even worse, people began trying to speak over one another and the volume gradually increased until there was an amazing din of people calling their friends to say "Hey! Hey! Betcha can't guess where I'm calling you from! An airplane! Ha ha ha ha, yeah and on my own cell phone even!". It was a horrible forced invasion of personal space and ever since then I had been hoping that the FCC would not allow this to become a common occurrence.
Had people do this on the ground as well while waiting for the spot for for takeoff about 1/2 hour . For some reason...I had no problem breaking wind while they were talking. The difference is that my "gift" was the one which kept on giving!!! Thank god for the beans/burritos I ate beforehand!!!
I can be just as rude & nasty as these morons that think their cell phones are a right...rather than a way to get help in an emergency. Never understood how these morons think their life is the least bit interesting to me. For some reason...in the event of a nuclear holocaust or pandemic...their life won't be worth any more than any of the rest of us.
The thing is, the warranty makes no mention of any software requirements. Its all well and good if they don't want to support Linux (well, imo its wrong, but still legal), but if they don't say "Changing the OS on this system voids the warranty" then what HP/Compaq is doing is fraud. You can't arbitrarily void the warranty. Otherwise they could say, "Oh, you installed Firefox? We only allow you to use IE, your warranty is now void." etc.
Used to work for a former major OEM doing phone/online(email) support. Before we would even start doing anything...the first question out of our mouths (taught to us by management) that we can only troubleshoot/support anything under warranty was to ask if there were NOT ANY third party devices or software on the computer. The reason for this is that the company was under no obligation to support a device or software which you bought from someplace else. The third party software & hardware would not be in the configuration or be sold by the OEM. Unless you replace the OS or take off only god knows what hardware/software on there...you'd be shooting yourself in the foot & creating a worse problem. For the most part...the people who wanted free tech support to too cheap to learn anything about how their computer worked in the first place.
For instance...would you want to take your Chevy car to a Ford dealer to fix the problem of an after-market or even stolen device you had to have installed or installed yourself on the car??? Why should I have spent company time fixing an issue little Johnny caused in the first place by downloading & installing warez or developing a virus.
If you hear "fuck", it was either "frack" in the script or the actor was ad-libbing and the director liked the take too much to re-shoot or dub.
Went thru several episodes last night trying to find this...but didn't in the episodes I watched. When I was looking for it...couldn't find it...but if I'm sitting there enjoying the episode...it pops up. Just remember that I had to go back over the scene when I saw it to make sure I heard it correctly.
I haven't noticed, no. But I'm only about halfway through season 3. You mean they have actually switched to saying "fuck" instead of (or in addition to?) "frak"?
I noticed it happening when they on New Caprica during the occupation...then seems to be happening more & more in the last 1/2 of the episodes from season 3. They are still using "frak" as well.
For the love of Baltar... why??
Probably for the reason is to see if they could get away with it. Sci-Fi allowed it on the show & seems to be happening more & more often as the season progresses. As for myself...there's a time & place for everything. Used in a porn movie or on a channel like HBO & such...yes...used in a TV episode on a "basic channel" during the evenings when whoever may be watching your show...no.
If Sci-Fi has any plans on picking up Torchwood, they're being very quiet about it. Even if they did, they'd edit it quite a bit. (You can say/show things on British TV that Americans are too uptight for.)
If you haven't noticed...Battlestar Galactica has used the "F" word on several occasions this season on several episodes. This being the case...the language isn't going to be an issue...but the form of the naked persons is. With Sci-Fi not being on broadcast TV...the FCC has no control over anything they may do.
Terrestrial radio would be in big trouble because they have to claim more listeners to get the advertising dollar, but being popular would work against them.
From having been in commercial radio for many years...I can tell you this that standard "free" radio is running terrified of ANY medium which isn't them. That includes satellite...IPod or MP3's. With commericals every 7 minutes running for a minimum of 5 minutes...people (you & I) have told them this isn't the way to run a business...but they refuse to listen. Most station owners think they own the airways & know short of using the "F" bomb over & over...the FCC will NEVER turn down their renewal applications. It was VERY common to be in meetings with owners who would think of ways to best screw their competitors...even stealing programs that other station had & the owners I worked at wanted.
You maybe wondering what I listen to...XM radio/DirecTV...my own collection of music & amateur radio (ham). I refuse to listen to local radio...since I consider it a medium which will not change & broke its leg. We shoot horses for less & having just 2/3 viewpoints on 10+ radio stations is not the what is in the public interest.
You want to fix what is broken...start filing complaints with the FCC & put up as many roadblocks as you can for their station renewals. If station owners actually start losing their licenses...things will change.
Being in Arizona...don't have this issue...except in the NE corner of the state on the Navajo reservation. It's 1 of the things I enjoy living here for.
Haven't bought a CD in years and will not buy one ever. I will not waste my money on you worthless people.
Being the old fart I am...the last new CD I bought was the Pink Floyd collection & I think that was late 2001. On the other hand...you can screw the **AA by going to your corner rental store & buy used. Been doing it for DVD's & for CD's. The stores buy what seems like millions of copies & they need some way to recoup their money. This way...I still payed the license fee & the **AA still got paid when the store bought the original DVD or CD. Got a few fingerprints on it...Divx/Xvid takes care of these.
Every CompUSA near me has both Best Buy and Circuit City nearby
Very true about this. For instance...in the Las Vegas area...you will find either/both Best Buy & Circuit City either in the same block...across the street or less than a mile from CompUSA. The funniest thing about one of CompUSA's location location in Las Vegas is the PC Club store is next door to CompUSA...with only a breezeway between them on Sahara.
The ONLY things I get from CompUSA is some of their training manuals for $5.00 & Bawls Mints/Soda. This way...save money/time on the classes & can't find Bawls any place else locally without ordering them from ThinkGeeks.
Even if eBay moves off-shore, the fact remains that when the sale completes and the seller receives cash for the transaction... that is by definition "income".
While it is unarguably legitimate income that is required to be reported for U.S. residents, eBay is only one of COUNTLESS sources of non-employment based income that are absolutely untracable by the IRS.
I do have a weird question. Being a US citizen...what if I renounced my US citizenship to become a Canadian or other citizen of another country...what would the IRS do to me in this situation???
Personally, I find it unlikely that many Slashdotters are waking up with women in their beds, much less dangerous, beautiful ones
Sounds like my ex-wife...several girlfriends. Now...at least...having a roommate of a 10 year old grey Persian cat I don't awaken in the morning making sure my crotch is still left in the same condition it's always been...have a horse head in bed with me...don't look like one of the characters from Beetlejuice in the office or if they're medication is going to make them nice or crazy...USUALLY crazy seeing or hearing things.
Pets also don't scream at you about the woman you look at just a few moments too long. As long as you feed & pet them...the dog or cat is happy.
Would is really be so hard to require that new credit accounts can only be issued with a notarized signature? Notary publics are intended to serve just this kind of purpose -- to validate that a particular person really did execute an agreement. It's pretty easy to find a notary public even in rural areas, and they don't report their specific activities to the government, so there's aren't a lot of big-brother concerns with respect to having your documents notarized. Seriously, this seems like a problem we solved 100 years ago.
I totally agree with you!!! The problem about this is that vendors who want to sell that flat panel or some other big ticket item to some idiot impulse buyer would lose that sell. They would have time to think about the possible hole they were digging for themselves by forcing them to get a notarized document for said sale.
This is one of the biggest reasons we don't have a national freeze on credit files...because the retail/credit industry would collapse from the idiots figuring out they really don't need the item or it's too much trouble to get the notarized document.
There was once a time when a full figured woman with curves was 'attractive'. It showed you were child bearing and rich (since food wasn't as easy to come by.) In most cultures it still is in. It just seems to be in 1st world countries that 'thin is in'.
Personally...I find "full figured woman with curves" MUCH more attractive than any woman who's skinny. Part of this is that not only are men & women getting bigger...but by & large...anyone 35 & over is going to be "more curvy"...due to the middle-age spread...child birth or other numerous reasons.
This being the case...if the only people you "choose" to date/marry are only going to be skinny...you're going to have a much smaller pool of adults to choose from. The easiest way to keep this from happening is to die before you reach 35.

Manually adjust the clock.
