  1. Can't eliminate every hazard on Laptop Fires On Airplanes · · Score: 5, Insightful

Is this really enough for us to go running scared about yet another airplane hazard? 22 incidents over 10 years is enough to make you think, but when there are hundreds of flights a day I would have to say it's one of the more minor problems that commercial airlines have to face and it seems like it can be solved by properly training crew members how to deal with that sort of fire. You could probably eliminate loads of possible "hazards" off of commercial flights, but not without major inconvenience and making the entire flight experience more miserable than it already is.

Everyone always goes OMGWTF when stuff that happens in real life makes it onto the 'net. There are two people that still see the Internet as magic (whether it is in the sense of not understanding the technology or whether it is seen as a magic money box). It's run by humans like everything else and so it's subject to all the human problems like everything else. Until most people stop seeing it as technology indistinguishable from magic then it's probably more OMGWTF in the newspaper and CNN every day.

Even if his suspension of foreclosures was a stunt to get him publicity, there are still reasonable people (like me) who thought it was the right thing to do.

Why? Because people a huge number of the foreclosures are going forward even though banks themselves can't even produce the mortgage paperwork! Because of all weird financial instruments that helped cause the mortgage crisis (cutting the mortgages up into securities and such) these corporations can't find the original paperwork. I don't know the exact numbers on this, but it's a big percentage.

There are Members of Congress that are saying the same thing: make the companies actually PRODUCE the paperwork! This is how lax the U.S. has become on the financial industry.

So, Dart might be a pompous windbag, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is wrong.

I just placed an order for the "Moral Panics and the Copyright Wars" book. I am looking forward to reading it.

I think that we've discussed it before, but there has also been 100 years of systematic indoctrination about copyright in our schools. In grad school I listened to an outside speaker come in and say that the institution of copyright was created to make sure that companies make money. She believed that, too, as that is what "common knowledge" now says copyright is.

The hysteria is very, very deep. Now when you try to explain the Constitutional reasoning behind copyright you only get blank stares and laughs.

Battery disposal is the first thing that comes to mind (as well as the "idiot throwing one into a fire" that come up above these comments), however if you create batteries that last A LOT longer, doesn't disposal become *less* of a problem? It doesn't go away, but if the batteries last as long as advertised doesn't it mean we need a lot less space to store the waste (but the waste might be a heck of a lot more toxic)?

  22. Re:ohhhhh... on Penny-Sized Nuclear Batteries Developed · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know this a joke, but it does remind me of something. One of the arguments that people on the far right have tried to use to convince the public that Iran is trying to build bombs and not energy is: "Iran has so much oil, why would they care about nuclear energy?"

Easy, sherlock... they aren't going to have oil forever. Iran might be thinking ahead. They might not want to make the same mistake that the U.S. made it comes to oil dependency.

Having said that, I still think that Iran's program is to make a bomb... but I think that argument is idiotic.
