Often a lot of people who are taking all these vacations are actually service members who are posted in or near all these locations and are taking some time off. Or they are on a business trip paid by the company and use some of their time for sight seeing. Also a lot of social media posts are just people lying with photoshop pictures. Or look at me in my new car, where they were just in a car show and decided to get a picture of a car. Finally people have different priorities if you are making 30k a year and you really want that fancy car. You can make it happen you just need to cut back on other things, for some people that is ok.
Being Slashdot is American and sometimes Western European centric in terms of members and stories. There is a lot of animosity towards India with people loosing their decent jobs to India because a bunch of companies decided to outsource everything. This was at full force in 2003 where it was the companies trend to fire all those quirky IT guys who get paid a lot of money, and shift the work to India for a fraction of the cost.
It took a few years but the realization that IT outsourcing was over used and not as cheap as it seems. So it scaled back a bit. But still there are a lot of people who had a good job in Slashdots core demographic area who had lost it and never really was able to get that type of job again. So many of the articles and post are bias against India.
So chances are some of India local officials may see something and decide to block it. But it may not be on the national blocking list.
I guess you got the Cable News lesson. The Bail out had saved ourselves in spite of our personal feelings about it. The problem was the banks took on risky loans with a mechanism that allowed to reduce the risk of loaning out to the individual loan. Your sub prime loan being split to a hundred lenders means if you had individually failed. The cost of failure will be small amounts across a lot of companies. So just as long only small number of people fail on their loans things are all good, Being that everyone individual risk is lowered the total risk is lowered thus allowing to offer a cheaper loan to a higher risk individual. Cheaper loans allows under privledge people to buy homes for the first time and begin to break out of poverty cycle, as they will have an investment to fall back on.
So giving cheap loans to poor people to make a normally solid investment is a good thing. However the crux was the adjustable rate. Normally this would be fine, as they will normally make more money in the future to match the change in rate, but the rate jumped up with the increase demand. So a lot of people couldn't afford their loans any more and had stopped paying. Causing all the problems.
By no means the banks were innocent. They did a lot of bad things that they should had realized was bad, just to make the quarterly profit. However the line between good and evil is drawn after the outcome is written.
I would take exception to the it was more of a "fashion statement than something that is useful" Traditionally Apple never was on the beading edge of the of technology. In terms of hardware and features they were on par with the others. What Apple had normally done was use the existing features and implement it in a polished and complete way. Normally a lot of the new features that other makers may put in their devices are buggy, or just are not useful, yet.
However the touch bar seems to be one of these new features, that just isn't that useful. Especially with touch screen being standard on laptops for a while now. Having a touch bar just doesn't seem that big of feature.
The dollar is good for all debts public and private. Bartering your services as payment means you may not have the skills that a particular project needs.
Paying means you can hire staff to do the work even if it isn't a project they personally want or need.
Boxing isn't about hurting people as much as trying to wear them down. Pain is a factor in taking the endurance out of someone. Their is strategy and skill behind it. Unlike a death match where anything can happen. That is why they are rules and a referee to stop the fight before someone gets too hurt.
That was my thought too. It seems the make a complex solution for an already solved problem. The only key difference I can think of is after you get to the last mile each truck can split from the pack and go its attended destination.
We all should be conserned about everyone security. If you see something insecure and you let it be without saying something then you are at fault. Black hats are often worse because beyond seeing the volnerability and not reporting it they exploit it. So your internet enabled tea kettle has a flaw and you know about it and you didn't do anything about it, such as putting it on a different network with strict firewall rules and you know how to do this then you are at fault. If the store that sold it to you and they knew about the flaw and didn't alert you and kept selling it. Then they are at fault. If the manufacturer knows about the flaw and doesn't attempt to fix it or recall it. They are at fault. If the component maker knows their component used in a particular manner causes a flaw and fails to report it then they are at fault.
Legally the finger will point up the ladder until a particular group had no way to know it causes a problem or didn't try to reasonably fix it. But each step in the process may get some heat if they are knowing there was a problem.
The venture capitalists does more research then people do on a crowd funding site. They will normally dig into the companies books, check out the companies location and make sure they are ready to invest big money into an idea. However most venture capitalists will invest more money investigating a company then most crowd source investors will put in. So there are risks for them just hunting enough wrong companies could put them out of business.
Not to mention SGI and Solaris systems that had rather advanced xwindows base UI. Even window 3.1 was out.
I found that statement to be ignoring the fact that Linux has been lagging in the desktop UI. Until the mid 2000's where device plug and play started to work. And simple things today like all the apps available in the GUI window menu were actually installed on the system. Wasn't always the case.
Whatever political/religious philosophy you follow there is always be a sub group that will go to the extreme. There is a natural human tenancy to feel like they are not doing enough or they are not suffering enough for a particular cause. This is partly due to the fact real life we need to make trade offs. Do I go to the party or do I study for a class. Should I put in an extra 3 hours of work, or do I go home to my family. Should I go to church every morning or should I go to the Gym, or perhaps get some extra sleep. Every choice that we take means a lot of things we will no longer be able to do. The extremists like to focus on one goal. When faced with a choice which will improve that one goal or something else, they will go towards the goal. This can often lead to violence as when confronting someone with a different philosophy on the topic, you could let him talk to try to convince others, or find a way to silence them so your voice is the only one heard. The extremist choice will be to silence the other viewpoint.
The paradox of this problem, we need to stop at all cost (for the greater good) people who will stop at nothing (for their cause, who thinks it is the greater good). The only difference between the extremist and the counter extremest is that the counter extremest has a reasonable line well beyond their comfort zone of opposing ideas where they say it has gone too far.
Life is complex, the world is complex. That is why we have problems, we don't have simple answers that can fit in a tweet. Or in a book, there are a lot of things, that can lead to good or evil. And it is often tough to determine where it leads until we see the results.
There is so much wasted space pointing upward, that could be used for solar energy collection or improved tree growth.
Cities have many square miles of ugly black tar roofs that could be collecting solar energy. They are fields that are laying fallow that could be reforested.
These are not things that are impossible for even modest governments, but we are lacking global leadership who is willing to say they will fund these projects and attack the problem on many angles.
Do you want to get Republicans involved. Well stop calling them uneducated hicks, start explaining how solar energy is a good way to be independent of these government controlled power plants and where you are responsible for your own energy. Business can be shown how this can lower costs over a longer time. Religious people just explain that solar energy from they sky is from God, while oil and coal is from the ground closer to hell. Have policies where you can sell back your power to the grid if you want too, or just disconnect from it completely. Avoid sob stories such as polar bears, when being told that their views are wrong for both liberal and conservatives they are not going to go, oh gee I have been a dufus all my life, Ill change. They are going to dig deeper and protect their stance and beliefs.
Audio is still a very analog type of work. So knobs and leavers more accurately represent what they are trying to accomplish. They may be other elements that are better suited for computers. But for the most part the knob is probably good enough.
The last phone I broke was the old Candy Bar phone I got in 1997. I never had problems with the thin phones, As they normally fit well in your pocket, compared to the bulky phones of old which were hanging off your belt, ready to get side swiped, or crushed against a wall.
I also need a 1 25 pin Parallel interface port, 2 Serial Ports (9 Pin and 25 Pin), USB, VGA, DVI, HDMI, Read Write Blueray/DVD, Ethernet, RAID 5 array, a 17 inch screen. Where every part can be serviceable,
Oh wait I want a desktop PC. not a phone. Perhaps I would be happy with a bulky laptop.
JavaScript is the main programming language for the browser.
Normally making a Web Application you often need to program in many languages. SQL for the Data Layer PHP/Java/C# for the Business/Logic layer JavaScript for the Interface Layer HTML for the interface
NodeJS is JavaScript, so you can cut down on the number of languages you are using for a Multi-Tier Application. This can allowed shared libraries across both sides Say your complex data validation check that you put on the Browser Side (as the UI layer needs this to keep people from keying in stupid stuff) then use the same code on the Logic Side, to double validate the data in case someone disables javascript on their browser.

True, it is more complex then just the individual. However to break the chain of poverty really needs the individual to step up and say I won't live like this, this means going against the ideals and habits that they grew up with. So it really takes a lot of work for someone to break poverty and actually get one of those dull lower middle class life styles, then their kids if taught right, decide to go further could make it to upper middle class. From Rags to Riches is extremely rare. But careful life decisions can get you to the next level. However society needs to help too. Welfare is both to easy and too hard on the individual. Once you are on it, it makes it hard to get off, and work your way up. But it also comes with a lot of conditions, that could prevent you from taking the next step, because success requires risk. Welfare rules do not want to risk tax payer money on things that may not work out. Using the Welfare money to go to school, get more training, or use the money to start a company. Because people can also use the money to buy Fancy clothing, a Big screen TV and the latest iPhone. However someone who is starting a home business could use this big screen TV in the waiting room, or the Fancy Clothing for a job interview and work attire, and the latest iPhone may have the features for them to work from home so they don't need to get a car or be late for work from public transportation.
There is a shortage of workers that the employees are willing to higher.
While politicians want to make the narrative of the hard working American who does their job every day, and comes home to a loving family. The truth especially for people who work construction. While they are a lot good workers, there are a bunch of Drop outs, more interested in getting drunk and/or taking drugs. Who party themselves sick and don't reliably show up to work. And when they are on the job, they just goof off and put in a half hearted effort, while the older guy is doing the bulk of the work. Employers are having a hard time find people who can pass a drug test, and be reliable to show up to work and put in a full days worth of work, and not rob the company or their customers blind.
Even if there are a mountain of people who are asking for a job, they won't keep their jobs if they are unwilling to earn their money. In short the Employee needs to be worth more to the organization then what they are getting paid. Sounds like I am being an evil capitalist, but the fact is, if you worth equal or less then your value there is no need for you are you are not beneficial.
The big problem is people stop after the first part, to make someone who considers themselves as a jack of all trades. As an MBA and Computer Scientist I can deal with the business folks and understand their issues and translate it to the Devs so the project doesn't seem stupid. Then also take all the Tech talk from the Devs and give a good business explanation to keep the project going. I am perfectly able to take full reigns from either side and keep things going. Promoting the quality of the work to the execs giving them a wowing demo. Then going to the Dev team giving them a list of things that are wrong needing to be fixed. And normally if they can't do it or don't have the resources I'll jump in and do it myself.
However what is important is teaching the meaning of the culture of where the child is residing from.
All this other stuff if it isn't part of your culture would be for a lesson later on. But for a kid who made offensive symbol, vs. yelling at them or getting them in trouble, it is an opportunity to teach them about why this isn't appropriate.
This nonsense that it means something else in different countries is besides the point. If this was done by a kid of an eastern descent then you may have to explain that in this culture it means something else.
Your attempt to give this kid an excuse to say what he did was fine, and cover it up with trivia is only harmful.
