The Mobile Smart Phone popularity is due to the face that you can bring it with you almost anywhere. Even an Ultra Portable Laptop has places where you would be looked at kinda funny if you took it with you, and the extra power of the laptop comes at a cost of battery life. A Smart Phone under moderate use gives you about 16 hours a day. A Laptop under that use gives you 3-5 hours. Also the Mobile Network is handy to get data when you are not near any other hot spots. Which does happen more often then you think. I got a smart phone figuring that it would be a fun toy... But I found it more useful then I thought.
I would think so. I have personally switched to Chrome from Firefox. So have many others. Mozilla Firefox has gotten too complicated for what I do with a Web Browser (If you remember Firefox started as the Fast and Light back to Basic Browsers). Right now Google Chrome is the Fast Light and Back to Basics browser that people really want.
What made it worse was Firefox really messed up when they did that crazy version numbers issue just to copy Google chrome as if the Version Number was the key to success. What that did was Show how desperate Firefox is, then their choice to snub their noses at valid complaints from business usage just made it worse.
Think of the early sailing voyages... How many ships were loss at sea... When we are exploring a new area unfortunately people will die. There are too many factors to consider when every flight is new.
The government tends to get Over Cautious on Loss of life mostly because bad press reflects everyone so badly. Yes Commercial organizations will be a little more lax on safety at first however they will be able to innovate faster... In the long run making a far safer and better methods of getting into space. NASA Needs to be super careful every time they do something... Sometimes too much that real mistakes happen, because they spend too much time looking at X and not enough time looking at Y.
By Greedy you mean everybody... Companies will be happy to give you products and treat their labor like royalty. If you are willing to buy an iPhone for $2,000 and iPad for $3,000 and $9,000 for a standard laptop?
If anybody who has worked in a small business you will see that the cost of operating a business is a lot more then most people think. If you do all the right things then your product will be much more expensive then your competitors. And then you don't make profit and you go out of business leaving all your well treated employees out of a job.
There is really a fine line between greed and staying competitive. Supply and Demand (Always start every problem as a supply and demand problem) If your price is above the supply/demand optimal point then you are loosing sales. If your price is below optimal point then you are leaving money on the table which will prevent growth.
Children need to learn there are times that there are things in life where the child cannot disrupt an adult. Locking the door is probably nicer then yelling at your kid to leave you alone, or tell him to go away. Locking the door is a passive message that you don't want to be bothered. You go to the door it is locked, you don't do the action and you are not punished. There is not a connection that the child is unloved unless an other adult or older kid plants the idea in his head.
For small smart phone apps that are easy to use you have a few business models to help pay for your time.
1. Charge for the app. Because it cost money a lot of people will not want to pay for it even though they wast more money a day on coffee, as there is a risk involved making the choice for the app... And for those early iPod owners they realize a dollar per song/app adds up overtime if you are not careful.
2. Free App with adds. Basically give the app for free as a something useful enough for them to tolerate getting adds.
3. Free App to Sell your Charge for App. You get the free version you like it. Then you can either get the Full paid version or pay for upgrades.
4. Free App to augment your existing app. You have an other product line (Say for PC/Cloud) and you get a free app to help sell/keep customers on your wider product.
Right now the idea of making an App and charge for support isn't viable. Because the apps need to be easy enough to use that you really don't need to charge for support, or they just wont get it. If they are that tough then they will probably be part of #4.
Well it took some time to learn how to code for that platform and make a usable application (even if it is a simple stop watch). The problem is there are too many people who want to get rich quick. Make a junk app, make money off the adds, then just be happy that they made the money then go to the next scheme.
The problem with book smart, is usually because the person learned how to abuse the education system, usually early on in the game. The person probably has a good short term memory and can read and save it until the test and dump it out of his head and not really learning much... I think the problem is the fixation on grades. Schools should focus on pushing out a bunch of C/B students. If they are an A student then you need to advance him until he consistently gets C/B grades. If they are a D or F student then you need to hold them back until they get it. That means that you may see some 3rd graders taking Calculus while some 7th graders are still mastering arithmetic. As well it would mean that it would be common to have 21 year old High School Graduates and some graduating at 25 also you may see a lot of students going to college at 13 or 14. And for those who graduate at 25 should be able to get into college just as easy as anyone else because they have shown that they have learned the material to advance. If if you are book smart, you may be able to advance up but you will quickly get into an area where you have moved too fast and cannot keep up with the material thus you will redo it until you really get it.
No student left behind is stupid... Race to the top is stupid... You need to raise the standards and keep each person individuality challenged no matter what their age is.
A degree in a field usually counts for 1/2 of the years of experience.
So someone who comes out of school with no experience and a Masters Degree in Computer Science. I would place them the same as someone with 3 years of professional experience... Well for a Masters degree I may round up to 4 just because they are normally a little older and more mature.
Now is degree useless... No because otherwise you will need to find a way to break a catch 22 situation. I need work experience however I cant get work experience because everyone wants experience.
However I would normally prefer someone from college then who spend 6 weeks in the basement... But the golden child would be school and 6 weeks in the basement. But schooling helps... When you are self taught you will tend to excel in some areas and have interesting unpredictable gaps in their skills. For example in SQL they may know how to handle Cursors and Temp Tables but not the Where Clause or Group By clause or Joins. In normal programming a Self taught programmer knows little of Big O and doesn't think in terms of performance in Big O and you see a lot of very wasteful nested loop coding because they are in the mindset of less lines of code means faster program.
Fresh out of college you normally get a consistent gaps in skills that can be planned for and trained. Most Collage Grads leave not knowing SQL, They have been hammered with OO Coding is the one true method, so older languages seem a little scary, and need brushing up on how to integrate mutable technologies together, combining Server Side coding with Database with Front End coding. Thinking in terms of security and putting a security layer in. But these gaps are predictable and you can teach them that on the job. Self Taught programmers will go for a while then run into a very basic concept that baffles them that they freak out on. Such as recursion
The fact that language is evolving gives me no end of joy, to think of all the Grammar Nazi, getting corrected all the time because the language has changed on them.
I may just be bitter because going threw school I had one right after an other of bad English teachers, who felt that they should tell me every time I am wrong and never really explaining how I should do it right. I have never really learned proper grammar, I have only learned to dislike people who feel the need to correct every detail, and discredit my arguments. Not due to lack of logical reasoning but to technical failures in grammar and spelling. Between K-Grad School I have had 5 English Teachers/Professors who actually were willing to help me improve my skills, who were willing to start the education with the following mindset, "you makes good points but lets make this read better" vs. what I normally get "your spelling and grammar is bad... So your points are invalid"
By flat-out evil you mean things like... Leaders from other countries acting like spoiled brats when a camera is not in front of them with. Or in a war that innocent people die and the government doesn't want to release the official numbers and the names of the troops who are still in harms way? Kinda evil.
You must live in Lollipop Land if you conseder that Flat-out-evil.
I am sorry the real world people are jerks, they are not evil just self entitled. And people die in war, when you have a war with a terrorist organization the line between civilian and insurgent is thin mistakes are made. The stuff that Wikileaks released anyone with a half a mind knew it was going on anyways. All he did was put troops in danger.
Hey that can be his headline. Vote for me, I'll put our allied troops in danger just because I don't like war.
Real Science vs. Popular Science (not the magazine)
The Popular Science treats Science like a religion which teaches "Ultimate Truth" That isn't Science. Science gives us the best/simplest explanation based on what we can observe.
Now It is possible that we (you) are a Brain in a Box being senses that actually do not exist in the universe, controlled by some higher power, that may be the ultimate truth. However, science doesn't allow this Idea because we cannot observe this effect, and it is a more complicated explanation of our observations then going with the idea that We exist in our universe and our senses are detecting the effects our our universe.
Real Science if you are wrong then you are wrong, Popular Science if you wrong then you must have done something bad and needs to be punished for pushing out lies.
Anonymous as a protest group is a stupid method for causing real change. Not the people are stupid, they just didn't fully think about how doing what they are doing will effect any real change.
I can see why it is on the news. But a Tech Site like Slashdot? Are we going to consider every crime that uses a Computer as a tech crime now? Just like how an Online Pet Supply store was considered a Tech company during the mid 90's
The way that a lot of websites blacked out their sites in protest of the SOPA bill was very powerful. 1. They Protested a particular thing. 2. People knew what they are protesting against. 3. The Protest was done at the risk of the protesters. Blacking out your site for a day could loose customers.
Anonymous on the other hand is Stupid protesting. 1. Their protest is sparse and could be about a lot of things possible contradictory. 2. People usually can only guess what they are protesting about. 3. Protesters are hiding under the vale of anonymity so they will not loose their jobs/reputation the next day.
The problem there are just too much stupid protests out there. Not that their goals are not worthy of protesting but they are just stupid in their protest. When ever an activist group targets to correct too many points they rarely get done. For example CFC were hurting the Ozone layer. The found a good solution to replace it and they protested to get CFC banned. It was an easy sell. Carbon is causing global warming... Well we don't have a good way of reducing carbon yet, and protesters are protesting a wide variety of untested methods of reducing carbon, as well they will protest against alternatives such as nuclear.
Ok a crime happened in the Bronx. You match the DNA up you see one match belongs to one guy who lives in Queens, and an other from a guy who lives in Albany. Who do you question first?
You swab your mouth. It gets shipped to a Lab. They put the swab in a machine that records key DNA records and saves it on a hard drive... This isn't a full GNOME match this only gets a few key elements enough to identify you. Compared to trying to solve a crime, you find DNA evidence then you need to use other means to track down the criminal to get their DNA so you can match them up. Taking Teams of people doing investigation to track down the person. Vs. getting the evidence sent that to the lab... You find a match and go and knock on the persons door with a warrant.
Why are you thinking about being a Criminal inside the United States? If so you can stay in Canada we don't want you. Sarcasm aside... Having your DNA on record isn't much different then getting your fingerprints taken, which will happen if you get arrested too.
For most of the Rich they are not breaking Criminal Laws, they are more often sued under Civil law. Criminal Law people can go to jail have a criminal history. Cival Law People pay money. It is Murder vs. Wrongful Death.
You are are becoming the minority.

Still the software is doing additional calls to try to get the data.
Plus your phone is taking time to process/reject those calls.

Cival Law People pay money.
It is Murder vs. Wrongful Death.
And not all people are doing Overtime every day.
I tend to work 40 hours a week. Even when I am On-Call 24/7.
If your jobs is forcing overtime chances are you are going to get laid off soon as either it will be outsourced to somwhere cheaper or automated.
