Palm didn't have a Killer App, so there wasn't much of a reason for people to really need one. Apple iPad doesn't have a killer app... However unlike Palm it is marketed to the consumer market so there isn't much need of a real killer app because it still is a toy. Sure some business like iPad but they are not used more then glorified notepads, and a large screen smartphone. There isn't an App that Everyone needs for business to really cause the tide to turn for Business Tablets.
If Microsoft didn't do it, It would have been an other company.
It comes down to more efficient use of your money. For $1000 you can get you kid an Encyclopedia set. Or a computer with software that has a lesser quality Encyclopedia but comes with a Word Processor and Other stuff for school, and games to keep the kid out of your hair outside of school. I had an old set of Hand me down Encylopedias when growing up (from mid 1970's) and a computer. I used the Encyclopedia once every couple of months to do a school assignment from 3rd grade to 6th grade, after that I was taught to use other sources. But the Old Amstrad CPC512 8086 I used all the time and nearly daily for my school work except for those teachers (With no Idea of modern Word Processing) who though it was better to make a rough draft by hand writing it then transpose the corrected version to be typed.
Well more to my point is that you shouldn't need to worry too much about coverage. Use Wi-Fi while you are in your hotel. And don't use it while you are out.
Not to mention that the popular Consoles haven't been upgraded in a while. The Smart Phones and Tablets are rapidly catching up to the ageing consoles.
The best part is the conspiracy is based on You Tube comments. I saw it once and missed it, then again then I saw it... It looks quite natural to me. Like a burst of cooler gasses going threw the corona, once it left a particular density/gravity it probably dispersed a lot like spray paint leaving a straw.
Someone else probably stole it and traded it for say $500 worth of drugs. Why take the hassle of waiting in the store when someone else will give it to you for cheap.
More to the point that Police should really put more effort into solving the small crimes. As it could lead them to going to the big ones.
Usually when someone is doing a big crime they will try very hard to cover up all their tracks. When they do a small one or probably more to the case someone else who is doing the small crime will make more mistakes. What probably happened was some dude who needed money for meth stole the iPad and then traded it for Meth to the dealer.
By 7th grade I was taught not to use an encyclopedia for reference. And that was in them olden days before Internet. You use the encyclopedia to give you general knowlege so you have enough to know where to go for real source material.
Wikipedia does the same. Go to Wikipedia for basic knowlege so you can go to real sources. For example you get passed a buzzword for a technology that you need to implement. You Wikipedia the buzzword and you get a quick view on what it is about them you know what to Google for real information.
In say 15 minutes you know enough to talk integantly about the product.
A Masters in Business Administration in not a soulless endeavor. A modern MBA (Post Enron) deals with ethical problems all the time as part of its training. Showing numbers on how happy employees work better etc... The problem is that there are a lot less MBAs then you think they are, and a lot that are got there degree from a Diploma Mill and not from a Fully Accredited Institution. I spent 4 years working for my MBA part time at an accredited institution and it actually help me spot unethical actions a lot easier then I did before I got the degree (Which had lead to me leaving a job for ethical reasons, before I had to get involved, which was good because months after I left the SH*T hit the fan and there was a lot of trouble) Before my MBA training I probably would have gone with the flow because I was unaware of the details on why they are doing what they were doing and I would have seen the increased pay as just a normal raise, not a method to move assets from one unit to an other behind the owners back.
Being an MBA doesn't mean you are a big shot Exec, it is a Masters Degree in Business Administration which helps you understand many details on what goes on businesses, Economics, and best practices learned for other companies and a lot of case studies on what other companies did or failed to do.
Nowhere projects are actually quite useful to the employees, Google is probably saving 20 billion in training costs, and keeping the skills up for each employee. The driverless car, or a software project dealing with real time image recognition, that could help on a better image search feature? Or clearer street view on Google Maps?
Writing your own programming language helps you better understand existing languages.
I have learned a lot of writing a lot of products that never went anywhere of even finished. Then working professionally I come across a problem and I know how to deal with it because it was a problem I solved in one of my Toy Projects.
You are on vacation. You should escape the ties to your phone. Bring your phone, keep it off except for an Emergency during the day. When you are at the hotel, use the Wi-Fi available.
While I am at the other End of country I found that most plans AT&T Verizon, sprint... Don't really care about you crossing into different states. And normally a Dead Zone for AT&T is a Dead zone for Verizon.
Which is all fine and good for a larger application. But for the small and light program that does a few things but does it well, there isn't much money for support. Not all software is equal.
Lets use Microsoft Office. In general most people know how to use it, if it is going to break you reinstall it and it works again. You are not going to want to pay Microsoft support fee (or LibreOffice) support fee to keep the program running non mission critical software system, if it breaks you reinstall it with factory defaults and your back to running again. For software such as office you are better off paying for a one time fee and use the software throughout its life cycle and then by an other version later. If I want to make a living creating software for common use with the general public that does a small subset of features and does them well, that still could require a lot of hard work, and selling it under a closed source license is to my benefit, as if I made it open source I may get lunch money from donations. And no one will want support because the product does what they need it to do and they don't expect much more from it.
Now we have systems such as CRM and other large enterprise systems. Those systems support is where you make the money not off the license cost. Because the application needs to be highly customized and a lot of hands on configuration to make it run with the organization. And business process will constantly change so running support would be benefit both sides.
Well unlike in the past Microsoft is taking a lot of competitive pressure. You see the iPad getting all the media love, and the competitors spewing out a bunch of Android tablets. For windows tablets there are very few options... I myself am getting a Lenovo x220t laptop/tablet. Because I still want to do software development (something you cannot do in the walled garden Android and iOS tablets) but looking around I couldn't find too much in terms of Windows Tablets. If Microsoft messes up Windows 8 too much Microsoft will loose out more of it home consumer market, Giving a time for iOS and Android users to get their tablets and start investing into software for their platform... Making switching back much harder. Before Windows 3.1 capitalized on the DOS user, if they didn't like windows they were still using DOS apps, Windows 95 still kept the DOS apps running well and most of the Windows 3.1 apps ran fine too. 98 was a minor upgrade, sure they dropped the ball on ME, but people would either still stay on 98 or go to Windows 2000, being Windows 2000 was rather successful a lot of Apps were made to work well with the NT kernel so XP came out. Vista sucked but people stayed with XP, While Vista was sucking Apple came in strong and started to take part of the market away but Microsoft was still strong for Windows 7, which was good enough to stop the I am a Mac and I am a PC commercials. However during this period people got more interested in their smartphone and then tablets and that most of their normal home/business stuff worked well on tablets and are less interested in PC's... Now Microsoft is facing competition in a new field, their PC market is becoming flat, and ultra portable tablets are getting popular. So Microsoft will either need to adapt or die.
What I have seen with Windows 8 I see it is still a gamble. 1. The User Interface looks nice for flat screens and I think a lot of people will like it however, it will take a while for Metro apps to come out. 2. Support of ARM and Intel is good however software isn't cross compatible... Microsoft seems to have a skill set problem with cross compatibility. 3. Microsoft has done great strides to clean up their image, however at a cost of making them seem like the old guy who is no longer popular. (Granted Apple is just as old as Microsoft, however they found a way to keep up their hip image)
Unfortunately the RMS method of making money means there is a economical motive to make software that is complex and hard to use. The simple and easy to use software is often reserved for closed source applications as there is a motive to make easy to use software so they can get paid for the software license, and not deal with the trouble of support.
The problem with headaches at least for me, is if I am trying to look around and see all the other details and my eyes are moving around and the objects 3d perspective doesn't change correctly. Or they make the 3d off slightly so it is too 3d for my eyes thus making me try to focus on the wrong part of the movie
If you get a headache it is usually because you are looking at stuff that the producer doesn't want you to see it.
Well the lack of consequence is one aspect to it. However Humans are curious people too watching entertainment violence is normally looking at something that is outside your normal experience.
However I would expect if a person were to live a consequence free life they probably wouldn't starting violence but most likely doing things that gives them pleasure, Food, Sex, Taking stuff they want...
Buzzwords have a well defined meaning... They just abuse them. Using them in cases where they shouldn't be used.
For example Synergy: Is when the output of a team or groups activity is greater then the sum of each member. This happens when you are working together and you come up with a solution together that no one by themselves would come up.
The word had been misused because of its closeness to Synchronous and Energy and used more to express things working well together.
Slashdot is a tech site... the Economy is booming for tech workers, right here in the USA. I get a job offer out of the blue every couple weeks.
For the software music and movies... Do you really need those? They sound like frivolousness entertainment to me. Entertainment made my people who work to get paid for their effort. If you cannot afford it... Go without. Or look for a cheaper alternative. By pirating media you are not really making a statement unless you are willing to say I am a cheap bastard and I only get what I can take. If you don't buy the product because is is costing more then you put value to it. Then the companies really get the point more... They monitor the Piracy off their stuff, if they find that it is heavily pirated then they know people like the product, and they find value with it... But pirate channels have given them a spot to get it for free.
Well they have their own nationality names anyways. Mexican, Canadian... Also it is the United States of America as part of our name, unlike the other countries in our areas the USA is 3 words long. So it makes making a word to describe us rather difficult....
Unitarian (That is a religion), Statan (Looks really close to Satan, Iran would have a field day with that one).

Easy Solution... Don't smoke pot. This is an easy solution unless Pot is more addictive then the legalize pot activist say it is.

You don't tell the control group that they are taking LSD.
Placebo side effects: dry mouth, and feels a little bit hyper.
The Other drug side effects: a talking dragon asking you live by the sea.
Even if it was legal, do you think it would pass FDA approval?
LSD does have some long term side-effects on people. Such as Trips years after using the drug.
