    I think they could. Most engineers could make a robot from toy parts. Now adays. Even though North Korea is mostly blocked off from the rest of the world, it could get its hands on some rather simple non-classified low tech stuff.

    Remote Control, a Web Cam, and some servos attach them to a gun and you have a killing robot.

    The problem I see is that schools are wasting a lot of money on computers where they can put that money better elsewhere. Lets do some simple math (Numbers are approximate)

    A school who has a Student to teacher ratio of 30/1 and each kid in a school of 1000 students all get a computer that is $1000 a piece.
    The teachers average cost is $50,000 a year.

    so 1000 students * $1000 = $1,000,000
    We Take $1,000,000 / $50,000
    We get 20

    So Without the computers you can hire 20 more teachers.

    Now the school has 1000/30 = 33 Teachers right now and you add the additional 20 teachers. You get 53 teachers.

    1000/53 = 18 students per teacher.

    I think the money is better suited from moving away from computers in the classroom because
    1. They don't help much with education.
    2. Schools are idiots in computer literacy.
    3. Are means from distracting a group of people who are already easily distracted.

    When I was a kid, I took apart an old Atari (broken) Joystick and realized that it was very simple wiring, Just contacts so I got some plexiglass and some radio shack buttons and made my own game pad from the cable. It worked like a charm.

    No Al is a hologram projected from the real person in the future... He actually doesn't predict it himself he uses Ziggy a supercomputer with a personality, to do the actual predictions. He is telling us this so his friend Sam Becket (who looks a lot like Captain Archer from Star Trek Enterprise) can Quantum Leap again hopefully back to his own time...

    I disagree with your recommendation for #1. about just making a bunch of static pages. You have Expensive servers that are running at max performance. You have the client PC who often runs quite sub optimal. I say let the PC do a bit more work and save the server. Secondly reloading pages for every click hinders the user experience and can slow down information much more then having the Javascript do the work.

    The key is getting the right balance of static pages and Javascript making sure each part who can do its job the best has a chance to shine.

    That and browsers should still focus on speeding up Javascript and CSS as like it or not Web pages are moving to Web Applications and need more client side processing.

    I think they are legal. However you will need to prove that you IQ Test is bias on Race, Gender or Religion. Many of these tests are, thus could get you in trouble. Also Must companies don't use IQ because it isn't a good measurement for business. IQ tests are good for judging development of people threw-out their life, and if they have a very Low IQ or a very High IQ it may show. However we tend to use it as an excuse on how smart we are, which really isn't the case.

    I have seen people with Low IQ perform better then people with high IQ on mental tasks because they know to work hard at it while the high IQ person who just thinks they are all that expects it to come easy and doesn't put the effort the project deserves.

    Except for the IQ Score you should really be getting the standard deviation from the average. As the actual score can very based on the questions and the experience.

    Being that it is a town municipality I would suggest that you invite other Cable Companies to possibly setup stop in your area. Comcast is one of the worst cable companies out there in almost every aspect. You are probably doing your town a favor and yourself too.

    I would like to see how it compares to other "Modern" Browsers in terms of speed. Lately Firefox (which was supposed to be the fast and light Mozilla) has been running at speads that beat IE but not the other browsers. I would love to see Firefox compete with the other guys as well.

    The analogy is all wrong he is comparing two unlike things.

    If he used Cable TV and the Internet it would be a better analogy... However Cable TV is still around and not showing any signs of dyeing. Heck it has expanded to host the internet too.

    Open Source software has its strong points however it really depends on the target user groups.
    Most (Most means more then 1/2, and Not all) Open Source projects have a limited financial funding behind it, and is built with a rather loose organizational structure. So it is really software designed to fill the need of the programmers, others are copies of commercial applications. But there isn't the intervention of the PHB and Marketing and Sales. However these groups that we like to classify as hinderance to your job actually really help the product especially when you are releasing software for non Techies.

    Yea right...

    With some colleges with some form of anti-piracy in place and others with plans already on the plan... Fighting piracy for colleges may actually be a good thing for them.

    1. Most college MIS Departments are severally limited in what they are getting in terms of technology saying they need this to fight piracy (and to get a better firewall or redo their antiquated network) Can get the new equipment they needed for decades.

    2. Cutting piracy can increase overall bandwidth for the college.

    3. Reputation, say they all did do nothing and federal funding withdrew the funds... First we point out the feds and say how they are the bad guys... Then all they need to do is point to the rules that are broken and it will shut-up the general public.

    4. Good relations with the Feds. You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

    5. Piracy is a Bad thing. It is illegal... A bunch of rich kids pirating software just because it will cut into their beer money. I went threw college what was pirated most of the time... Games, Music, Movies. What they pirate the least, Books, Educational resources, and anything else their mom and pop will put up the bill to pay for. Slashdoters try to make piracy as some form of civil disobedience, it is just taking software. And justifying it because of the following lame excuses...
          a. I wouldn't have got the software if it wasn't free anyways... Which has the flaw of what about the stuff that you would have paid for if you couldn't get it for free. Also what about those free Open Source substitutes that are supposed to be so much better then the propriety stuff anyways. Or follow the path of Linus... I couldn't get the software to do what I wanted for a price I wanted to pay so I made it myself.
          b. They are not loosing anything when I pirate. Except that box isn't the most expensive part of the software it was the work of talented IT people (you know those jobs you want to make money in). You think of software in terms of Microsoft... Most software is written in small teams of less then 10 people. After all the expenses they are not making as much as you think.
          c. SOFTWARE SHOULD BE FREE AS IN SPEACH! Fine but the people who published the software didn't agree with you. If you think breaking their wishes for your beliefs means that companies should break the GPL because they don't believe in that license.

    6. This rule is about showing valid enforcement not stopping it. There leaves gaps where you can say you are doing your part, without really measuring your success.

    After that they can Work on Linux stability, OS X Stability, ... I don't know the last time you used windows but windows is pretty darn stable. Lately I have seen more Linux Crashes and OS X Crashes then Windows crashes.

    Perhaps that mindset is the reason they don't have jobs... Most other majors after you graduate you do work that is not fully up to your skill sets... Even with the might Computer Science degree... you are probably going to do things for a bit that a high school grad could do... However with you computer science degree you could work out of that job and do more what you want to do... If you have a CS degree you solve your problems like a CS major... Except for just doing the work you write programs that do it for you. You add these projects to your resume and you work up.

    It isn't like the golden years of the 90's where you got a 100k job just for knowing Front Page. Times have changed like it or not the market has stabilized you will need to do work and work up like the rest of the population.

    Besides trying to kill netscape as it was one of its goals at the time during Windows 98. The fully integrated web browser wasn't as successful UI as it hoped for. Still people clicked on the e icon to get on the internet. They never really typed the URL in the Windows Explorer tool bar. To load the page on there... As well the security concerns of Active X made it rather unusable rather quickly. And put a stop of having a huge amount of web sites with Active X controls auto install "legit" applications on the PC. Over the years Microsoft has been de coupling the browser from the OS... As they realized all they need to do to keep it popular is just have a link that is easy to get to as part of the default setup.

    Having the browser decoupled has a lot more advantages.

    Marriage is still part of religion. That said separation of church and state should mean that if you are going to tax and give legal benefits to someone who is married due to a religious right. Then you should be able to offer the same benefits of people with different faiths or none at all.

    I alway Liked the concept of the Civil Union and where 2 people get married it is a religious experience. Then they apply for a civil union for the Tax and Legal benefits.

    Both sides of are equally stupid. When you go Far RIght you are hindering all progress. If you go to the far Left you are trying to fix things that doesn't need to be fixed, or with solutions that just makes them worse.

    When you open the gates for public opinion you are going to get the Crazies from both sides. And because they feel so insanely strong about their opinion they will be the most vocal... Drowning out the ideas of the more sane people.

    The Wiki Definition is right your analysis is not.

    Because there are some things you are kinda missing...

    The C Language has the ASM command for moving those registers around if you feel the need... And if you dig into these libraries you find that most of the stuff that is going on ends up to be assembly language. What you are thinking is just as assembler perhaps with some macros. Assembly isn't a language, it is a 1 to 1 map to what the computer is doing.

    Languages offer abstractions so you don't need to move the registers around all the time... the wikipedia you mentioned had "strong abstraction" vs. just any abstraction.

    What is their education, what do they do for a living, what services do they need, what don't they need...

    You say who is fighting for the ordinary citizen's like it is a simple statement. If you are too tough on corporations they cannot operate and move out and kill the economy, if you are too lax they will take over. Every choice has a tradeoff. Lobbyists work for a big slue of sectors including many non-corprate groups, and other groups that you may call the Good Guys...

    Hey if I worked for a Oil company I just may like the Oil Lobby as it is defending work for me as the average joe... But if you don't then they may be the enemy.

    Unfortunately without lobbyists I see politicians swerving to whatever the general population thinks at the time, and then money and resources are put in and by the time it gets going it is dropped as their values change overnight...

    Well I think it is a case there is a lot of people unhappy about things that Steve Jobs is just being a dick about. Such as flash support, and the ability to get it. Also there are a lot of apps that you can get on jail broken devices that actually bring the system to the next level.

    People want these devices to do things their PC can however Apple is often telling them No.

    C was never a High Level Language. It was a more portable Lower Level Language. Sure it was above assembly (As Assembly isn't much of a program language, but but just a 1 to 1 translation to machine code) it was lower then COBOL, Fortran, Basic, Lisp, and many of the other popular languages at the time.

    The difference between higher languages and lower languages. isn't as much portability, while higher languages tend to be more portable, however a high level languge such as VB is less portable then a Low Language such as C. But more to the fact how much of the execution of the code is based on the compiler vs. the programmers understanding of the computer.

    Eg. in high level languges. you have string classes that do a bunch of cool things...
    in C. you have a pointer to a block of characters and any effects you need to do you need to code it yourself.

    Old Languages such as LISP where higher level and isolated the programmer from managing memory and handled it all itself.

    Well there are some factors that come across where child-rearing has a negative effect. There is maternity leave... Men can take that too, and they probably should to help raise their kids... However there isn't the same bond between the infant between a father and the child as with the mother and the child. Instinctively the mother will usually use full maternity leave while the father will use part of it. What that does is take you out of the work force for a while, while you are gone they do some work and reorganization while you are gone to makeup the work you are not doing. When you get back You have a bunch of new projects for you to start and you are a starting out new so it will take a while for your results to be seen.

    Secondly women often take advantage of Flex time and working at home to help take care of the child. While this doesn't effect their work or their quality. However most company in terms of giving raises and promotions usually go to the person who is most visible to the boss. When you are working at home and doing an excellent job you are missing BOSS TIME which helps you get ahead.

    Because designing a page for modern browsers. You put in all the new cool effects to enhance the user experience... (Normal non-tech people actually like a nice modern interface). If you are going to make a non-effect version that is just more work for you to do... For a small group of people who should upgrade anyways.
