Bah. Back the old days we had chat and it was better too. Full split screen chat. You typed on top the person you were chatting with was on the bottom. Real time you saw what they typed there misspellings and there typing speed.
There was also versions of this for BBS's it was great because you can see how computer literate the people were by their typing
So you are saying the GIMP is superior to Photoshop. I tend to use Acrobat Reader to read PDFs why... Simple if it doesn't open I can blame the sender. If I use an other company they will have me hunt and peck and eventually reuse Acrobat Reader. It isn't that bad really. No it is not quick and light and snappy but it is usable. The same with Flash, Personally don't use flash in any of my work... But I do like Homestarrunner.com
Adobe Reader, and Adobe FlashPlayer isn't crap where. It makes sure you can actually do things that for some reason windows doesn't do nativly. Such as Read PDF files and open Flash WebSites. Relatively common things.
That sound more like making excuses for your bad driving. Part of you're driving ability isn't just your own control of the car. But how to interact with other drivers. Speeding doing illegal turns etc... Puts the other driver in a state that they don't know what your are doing. So they don't know thus more chance you will get in an accident. For example tailgaters, when you are tailgating someone you don't know what they are going to do. Will they shift lanes without looking hitting the other car (as they appear that they are going to get rear-ended) Will they hit the brakes who knows... Saying I haven't gotten in an accident yet is not proof of your driving skills. It is just that other people have been good enough to keep distance away from you.
Simple. Almost all higher ups in government for some reason have Law degrees and is currently or use to be lawyers. If there is a problem they will point their fingers down a chain of rube-goldberg like causes and effects until it hits someone Who has no one else to point too. Then this person who is usually just a public servant or a vender will take all the heat for a full chain of mistakes that caused some problem. So say gmail went down for 5 hours. Sure it is a mistake on googles part. However it is more of an inconvenience then a major problem. However during this time a public servant didn't get the email saying they needed to send a document or pay a check because he wasn't notified because email was down. The person who sent the letter realized shortly after he sent the message email went down did nothing about it assuming the servant recievied the message but because email was down he couldn't get a conformation. His boss asked if it was done the manager says he sent the servant the message, he didn't get a response back because email went down after he sent it. The boss above him took it as the task was completed. Now because of this lack of task there was a major problem. So the upper manager points to the upper middle manager says you said it was done. the upper middle manger will point to the middle manager and blame him for telling it was done, the middle manager will point to servant for not sending the information on time but the employee will point to google saying the email was down and couldn't get the message. Google gets the heat.
This wasn't really googles fault. If this was important the middle manager could have called the employee to check to see if he got it. The Upper Middle manager could have asked the middle manager to verify by phone f they got the information. The upper boss could have asked more details on when it was going to happen.
It was a breakdown in the management of the organization . Sure google went down however their management was broken and the problem is the fault of many people.
Companies at least the good ones don't do this type of behavior as much as it is a wast of their resources, and nothing is done to prevent it from happening again. So google can feel a bit more lax in running their system.
The Study of Math and Science shouldn't always bring you directly to an academic type of work. Colleges and University tend to forget (at least after they are done with they're advertising) that most students are going to school so they can get a good job. Schools do a horrible job providing students an idea what type of work is available outside college. In my Computer Science Program they told me my options were Programmer, or Teach Computer Science. (Which is better then other majors) What do you do with a History Degree well you teach history. What about Physics... In some ways colleges idea of Majors is rather outdated, and designed purely for a career track in education. Computer Science and Business, Computer Science and Art. Physics and Engineering. History and Mathmatics... However most people can't do a double major. But colleges should really create custom type majors to help students with a career path. Also really letting people know what type of jobs are out there to do. Computer Science and English for technical writers. We need more Math and science not less. We are in a society where people are afraid to looking at problems objectively or blindly taking a look at numbers without really understanding them.
I grew up on a farm and have seen the full process, from Birth to my mouth. I still eat meat. The process your vegies go threw on the other hand I am quite iffy about.
I am surprised that anyone is able to keep their job. Where an honest mistake where no one was harmed causes someone to loose their career. I would feel more comfortable riding in a plain from a pilot who has a relatively good record and made a mistake and got severely corrected As they know the severity of their mistake, and are extra careful not to make an other one. Vs. a Pilot who has a good records but has gone too comfortable with their job, and will be likely to make their first mistake.
It reminds me when I first started working. I was cleaning out my old backup files. so I meant to do a rm -f *~ but me being green and not so careful I did an rm -f * ~
I Hit Ctrl-C after I realized it was taking way to long. However, I cleared out about 2 weeks of work. Plus my personal documents. Needless to say I learned to backup more freaklently and the value of a good source control system. But If I were to get fired after that mistake and forced to switch careers then I wouldn't be able to apply my new learned methods.
That is why I cringe whenever there is a big mistake and people go well I hope that guy gets fired. Because the guy who did the mistake and especially if he was honest about it, would probably be so much more careful the nest time around. Who I would be more worried about is the guy who fired him. As part of the mistake is on him too. For not making sure they are safe guard in place.
Back in those day getting a pipeline for hosting was very expensive. $1,000 a month for a T1. Cable Modems, DSL weren't there perhaps only in R&D, and some very select markets. The fastest way to connect was threw an ISDN line. Which was still expensive, but gave you speeds about 120Kbs. Most of the time you were on Modems ranging from speeds of 14.4k - 56.8 k Running a server off of this was silly at best. Geocities was a good place to cut your teeth in making webpages. Yes most of them were rather dumb and poorly designed. But so was the rest of the Web. For the most part when people are learning they setup their geocities account to learn new things, in the process make ugly pages. Oh I can attach images like this. Hey it does animated gifs too. Oh I can change the colors around...
there is an other danger of meat byproducts. The fact that Pet food byproducts are different then human food byproducts. When you think of meat byproduct your stomach may be turned to think of things like hoofs and noses, and cuts of meat from other body parts you don't want to think about.
For pet food it is worse. Thinks like euthanized animals, where traces of the chemicals used to put old yeller to sleep are still in the meat. Road kill where who know what animal caught what.
Paragraph 1. I am too lazy to make any concessions for myself. You refuse to carry a pager however a union concession would be every getting a pager. I Never said drop your job and get a new one I said get a new job and drop your old one. There is a big difference. That fact that you have poor job searching skills and cannot find a place that doesn't require a pager means you are not looking very hard. Or the conditions of your work environment arn't that bad. I would just say you are Lazy.
Paragraph 2. Are you sure the company would cave in? If so for how long. Outsourcing does work. I was a consultant for 7 years. Unions hated me because I perfumed better then their employees. I was a threat because I showed what an outsourced person can do that a Union Employee couldn't. Outsourcing usually fails do to poor management in part of the parent company. Giving them too much leeway and not keeping them focused on what the company needs to be accomplished.
Paragraph 3. That is if the union is also for the employees interests and the companies. AKA a good Human Resource department.
Paragraph 4. I have seen real world examples of unions screwing over people. Far more then public companies. your 100 year old idealism doesn't hold true anymore. You are conseeding by saying only a small union but small unions don't work as they dont have teeth. Large ones do but they are very corrupt.
The binary is compiled twice. The way OS X packages its applications is the the Application that Icon that you click on isn't a File but a Folder with a predefined structure. So there there is a PPC and an intel port of the executable.
Linux doesn't handle applications that way. That means you will need to alter the kernel and create new files that will no longer be upward compatible with the old version or just do something really simple, however the simple solution is just as tricky as there are no starnardized installers for linux.
The file system/usr/bin/usr/local/bin/usr/lib etc... will have sub directories for each platform there is a compiled binary for. eg/usr/bin/x86/usr/bin/Amd64/usr/bin/Sparc etc... Now when the installer installs the software it puts the platform particular binary there is a script installed in the root directory that checks the platform and goes to its platforms version.

Unions need major reform. They don't want it so they pay the party that is big on Reform (the democrats) to not push them to do it.
When there are no unions, as in the industrial revolution, the owners were raping the workers. Now the unions have too much control and refuse to vote down wages and benefits during a recession..

In the past 2 weeks. I had my Ubuntu Box crash on me twice, actually a 3 weeks ago it was a lot more because I was looking at the screen savers. My Debian server crashed running only one Virtual Box VM, My Mac Crashed and needed to be restored from backups. Saying windows is more prone to crashing then other OS's is false. Prone to viruses is an other thing, but a clean un-virused WIndows actually is more stable then Both Linux and Macs in my opinion. However Windows vulnerability to Viruses makes it rather quickly from a stable system to a flaky slow OS the breaks.
It is really that big of deal? I have never really been bothered by a variety of Cell Phone chargers. I get a new phone every 3 or 4 years, my charger that comes with the phone usually lasts longer then the phone. The only charger I had problem with wasn't with the charger but stupid engineering by the part of Motorola where they made the connector on the phone not click in well and make it difficult to get a full charge as it will wiggle out after a few minutes. However even with standard phone chargers the same thing can occur.
For the most part my phones I had for the past 11 years all kept their charge for the full day. When I got home I plugged them in and when I got up the next morning I had a fully charged phone for the day. This push for standardizing phone charges just seems silly and not worth the effort.
I have more issues with standard sizing for plumbing fittings. Where the hose that goes to the toilet doesn't fit the hose that goes to the sink, and if you took a look at them and eyeballed it you probably wouldn't see the difference, inconsistent combinations of male and female connectors.
Having a patent doesn't mean you are going to use it. However Apple could use it against other firms for doing something similar and possible threatening their business model of selling hardware. Now selling adds and giving away the hardware would be a threat to Apples model so if someone does this apple could sue them to death.
Like the old Unix Command Talk

No you really need 16,711,680 cores. So you have one core for every cell in a standard Excel 2003 sheet (Yea I know 2007 finally gave us more space)
So 65,536 rows by 255 columns. A CPU for each sell processing its own value. Excel may almost run fast.
