$50k a year? Heck, I made about $25k the last three years combined and still had enough to get all the latest-gen consoles and a 37" HDLCD, on top of all my other "toys". It's all about which corners you cut. (Shopping at Aldi for groceries as opposed to going to Giant Eagle, $30-40 New Balance shoes when an old pair wears through, new clothes from WalMart, clipping every coupon you see etc.) Of course, splitting the bills with my fiancee also helps, but hey. (21, working on a Bachelor's, unemployed and living on school loans while classes are in session)

Yet they totally ignored the bagged-pantsed young teenage guys who would oh-so-smoothly stick a CD into their pants, or roll a shirt up while they were walking and shove it in their waist band, etc.

Pull the paranoid act on me all you want, I'll just laugh when you miss the actual shoplifters. And take my larger business elsewhere (I love the internet. Nothing I can buy in person is NOT less cheap somewhere online.)

Also, grar to singling out a guy for having long fair. Screw you, society. Fortunately I shaved my head last month.... and had the same looks and treatment until my hair grew in. No winning, I swear.

I have an American-staying-with-a-Canadian perspective for you.

A few years ago I was staying with friends in Mississauga, Ontario. We went to Lake Huron, and when we got back to their house I developed an eye infection. Pretty bad, too.

We simply drove to a clinic a few blocks away, told them what happened, that I was an American, yadda yadda, their form couldn't accept a foreign address so we just gave them hers (Since I practically lived there at that point anyhow, so it wasn't too far of a stretch) and I was in to see a doctor as soon as the paperwork was filled out (5-10 minutes) who quickly deduced the problem, prescribed me an antibiotic that he knew the in-house pharmacy would have in stock, and we were out of there in under a half an hour.

And a week later they got to repeat it again, since I managed to pass on the infection to my girlfriend, the daughter of the family I was staying with. Good job, me.

    Whooooooooosh! ;P

My fiancee and I had a discussion about this very topic after reading all the comments here, actually. (Well, she read about half before realizing they were getting redundant, and I was still happily reading... Maybe that says something about me?) and have pretty much decided that when we have kids, we're going to expose them to things slowly from an early-ish age, so that everything doesn't slam them full on in the face when they get to school.

I don't mean popping in a porno when they're 5-6 years old, but I grew up watching just about anything I wanted on TV, and by the time I hit 12-13 I wasn't interested in it anymore (Of course I still watched anime and the occasional movie, which is about all I do now) and I never did anything crazy, and I'm definitely not screwed up by it. I'm careful about everything I do, try my best to be good to others, and hey, I've got a gorgeous girl who loves me. (She must - She just preordered me a copy of GTAIV Special Edition.)

Although I was making a joke about protecting me in an accident, I sort of do feel that way. A seatbelt is purpose built to protect you physically from harm in an accident. I'm not afraid to let someone see something on television, because it's not going to hurt them. It's just images on TV. But that's making the assumption, of course, that I'll ever have cable. I bought my 37" widescreen LCD purely for gaming and my DVD collection. I didn't need an extra cost on top of what I paid for it to subsidize the cost for someone else's parental aid.

I believe in raising children, not in tossing them in front of the TV. And before you say "You've never had kids!" I have my younger brother and my cousins that I helped raise, all of which are under 15, so I remember every part of their life, since I was always there in their lives. My brother was completely under our step-mother's thumb, and as a result is a future clocktower gunman sociopath. My one cousin was raised by the TV, and all he watched was cartoons, was never told "No" when he was little, and now he's ruined.

I just have to find a perfect balance between those two extremes and I'm golden.

Add in the "I never intend to have cable TV," and "My fiancee will already have been an elementary school teacher for a few years before we have kids" and I think we'll be just fine.

I don't even remember what the post I'm replying to says at this point I've gone off on such a tangent. Hopefully I've at least responded to what you said?

  17. Combining Blogs? E-mail accounts? Ridiculous. on 'Til Tech Do Us Part · · Score: 2, Insightful

Why would you want to consolidate your blogs and e-mail accounts? That just makes it easier for people to get confused who's sending what to who, and what e-mail is coming for who, who posted what, etc.

It's not like you have to pay extra to keep your GMail (Example.) and Blogspot (Also an example.) accounts set up how they have been. Sure, maybe you might want to make a combined blog IN ADDITION to your personal one, with both set up as contributors, or maybe make an extra "everyone in the family" e-mail account for mass e-mails inside the extended family..

But beyond that, I can't see any good reason why you'd want to consolidate.

My fiancee and I each do our own thing online. I have *chan, Ultima Online, and SomethingAwful amongst other things, she has her pet sites and ... whatever else she does beyond that (Not that I don't care, but unless she says "OMG COME LOOK AT THIS!" or something to the effect, we rarely involve each other in our online activities unless it's to play a game together.). Maybe it's different because this stuff has been around since we've been old enough to understand it, and longer.

I don't know, I just find the whole thing silly. But then again, we're keeping all our finances separate for the most part, each contributing our half to the bills/groceries/etc., and splitting stuff like movies/games/other fun purchases by "Who will use this more?" (So I got stuck paying for the 360 and PS3 myself. Drat.) and it's working out just fine for us.

The only time one of us has a say in the finances of the other is if one of us can see it being a stupid purchase (Like my PS3 that she said "Don't get it, you'll never use it." ... and she was right.) but it's all opinion based.

Okay, I didn't sleep last night so I'm rambling. Time to get some coffee and hit the hay.
