I've noticed that since being online my spelling has improved tremendously. As a kid growing up I always had much difficulty with spelling/grammar, but in a world of red squiggly lines misspelled words become hard to ignore. I know most people say that spell check ruins people's ability to spell, however I'd argue the opposite.
It is. I can build the hardware equivalent of the low end mac pro ($2499) for half the cost on Newegg. I recently had to stock my design shop with computers. I looked to mac first because I prefer a unix environment, but it was simply too pricey. I ended up buying the parts on my own and building them. I'll post my build if you don't believe me.
Really? I find blender much more intuitive than GIMP. It follows 3d animation/modeling standards far more than gimp follows 2d/photo editor standards, and as such having come from maya/3dsmax I found it a breeze to work in.
Not quite. While the population of China is about 4.3 times the United States', the number of those connected to the internet is only slightly higher As it stands, China only has about 12 million more broadband subscribers than the US does. I highly doubt that it's going to increase by a multiple of five in the next few years, especially seeing as the majority of China's population is spread out over its rural areas.
Half the resolution, a quarter of the pixel count. The resolution refers to the x and y coordinates simultaneously, so we apply the half to each. We do the same thing when referring to scale models. When we say it's a 1:2 scale model, we're implying not that it's 1/2 the volume, but that each of the x, y, and z coordinates have been reduced by half.
Yes but what I asked for in the original comment was high dpi monitors. Look at the parent comments. jeffmeden was correct when he said that they got it backwards.
Are there any affordable High DPI monitors? Back in the day you used to be able to find 17" 1600x1200 crts, which were wonderful. My laptop is running at 1400x1050 @ 10", which is also very enjoyable. Are there any flat panel desktop displays out there with the same density? I'd love a 19-22" display running at 2560x1600.
These have actually saved me a few times. I get very lethargic while driving - never knew why. It doesn't have anything to do with me being tired/well rested, I simply get tired while in a car. I've fallen asleep once while on the freeway. Woke up to the rumble strips, would probably be dead if they weren't there.
If you're going to drop that much on a router, you're better off getting your own board and a custom radio. More configureable, better hardware. I'm using Ubiquity's routerstation right now with openwrt on it. Really a nice setup for essentially the same price. If you don't want to spend that much though, just get a WRT54GL and drop openwrt/ddwrt/tomato on it. You'll get essentially the same performance minus the wireless N support.
Gimp and Inkscape can import the native formats of Photoshop and Illustrator, respectively.
Be careful with this. While inkscape does a better job than gimp, both can't import the files fully. Gimp only has VERY basic interpretation of photoshop files. It will import layers, raster layer masks, layer effects, and some layer styles. Beyond that you're SOL. If you use any vector based maps, hue/curves/contrast/etc layers, smart objects, perspective, etc, then gimp will interpret the file incorrectly. Inkscape is a bit better with.ai files, but you'll have to do without any gradient meshes and some other advanced styling.
Gimp needs a lot of work still. It's great for quick fixes, but for larger scale projects/companies it just isn't worth it. Inkscape is fantastic though. It has some VERY nice vector capabilities. I've used it extensively for icon work, and I have to say that for making straight.svg files I prefer it over Illustrator.
The answer is no if you're looking for stock monitors with those resolutions. I've looked long and far but to no avail. However, what I was able to do was buy replacement laptop screens with those resolutions. You have to get an adapter kit as well, but it's well worth it if you're looking for density.
As much as I dislike the RIAA, the law is with this one in this case. Even worse is that Nesson has acknowledged the fact,
He labeled as âoegobbledygookâ the felony privacy law that is punishable by up to five years in prison.
but has blatantly said that he's going to refuse to comply with what the law says. That's like acknowledging that your source of evidence for convictions gets its information illegally, but you still choose to use it. Not that I know anyone who'd do that, but just saying.
And this is the first I've heard of this election. I had no idea this was happening. My guess is that too few people knew about the election in the first place, and that it was just a failure to advertise it properly.
At 3:28 they show a screencapture of them doing day to day tasks in windows, but the resolution presented is at least 1280x720, definitely higher than the AsusEE pc's screen res. Apparently windows is so much better that it can alter hardware!

Why not just set up mythtv and have it auto-extract?

Thats some dangerous thinking there SpuriousLogic. I think someone wants to visit the Ministry of Love.
Ha ha! First post! Like hell it was, this is my first post!
I think the invites may be random. I filled out my app to beta test it a few months ago, and only got the invite last week.
Care to play a few games later? It'd be fun if we could get a /. team going.

...welcome our soon to be skynet ran big brother government with laser beams on their heads.
Because you could easily disprove any claim they made with a simple packet sniffer. No private data being sent to a server = me trusting them.
...have you SEEN the rest of Slashdot?
I don't know what you're talking about. The new idle section is the pinacle of newsworthy news!</sarcasm>
But I can't live with the invasion of privacy. Sorry :(
So why not get Iron?
Ball and chains are my fetish, and good luck trying to get it to stop me from alt+tabbing to my cowboy neal porn.
