This is exactly it. For the last few years, we have pushed federal standardised testing of literacy and numeracy for years 3,5,7 and 9. I've worked with the markers twice, and the system is screwed up. From errors in the scanning making handwriting illegible to the fact it is mostly multiple choice, plus the obvious coaching some schools gave the students (an entire class with the same structured essay, the same incorrect answer etc.) versus others. I doubt it is a true reflection of the literacy and numeracy skills of the students.

Tying funding to successful academic performance is the most ludicrous concept out there. Schools with lower performance need more funding, not less. It's a disgrace.

You're not seriously suggesting that police and firefighters only service those who subscribe? That is a recipe for chaos. What's the point of taxes if you get nothing back?

There are many industries that are best under public ownership. Emergency services, such as police, firefighters and hospitals fall under this category in nearly every western country. Here in Australia the public and private health care industries coexist, with the private sector thriving and profitable, while at the same time offering everyone access to treatment.

I just don't see why this is such an issue in the USA, can you enlighten me as to why medical emergency services are seen as separate to police or firefighter emergency services?

Be realistic. I don't expect my single vote to usher in a third party candidate.... Only if the election is down to one vote will it matter what I do.

Yet there is no way to tell when and where this will occur. You sound like you vote libertarian, or would if you thought it counted. Your one vote counts far more than you think. If every apathetic third party supporter who doesn't vote turned around and voted there wouldn't be such an issue with the two-party system.

Well, seeing as the judge knocked back the positive ruling on software patents, in other words rejected the software patent, you are arguing that the judge was entirely correct to reverse the damages against MS. Which seems odd, given your original post. Saying no to all software patents means that sometimes even your hated enemy 'M$' is on the receiving end and should be given a break.

Oh and for the record, I argue it is YOU who is the unwitting Microsoft shill. Your extremist arguments are easy to refute with sensible statements, making the FOSS crowd look irrational, inconsistent and rude while MS shines as rational, polite and sensible. In a debate, nothing makes the case for your opponent more solid than a badly argued point by you.

Don't be a hypocrite and say patents are bad for everyone EXCEPT when people sue MS. It's a terrible argument full of flaws.
