Generally this is true that Microsoft likes to "extend" protocols in in-compatible ways. However the USB protocol used in the XBox is the standard version, all Microsoft has done is changed the plugs and sockets that it uses.
You obviously haven't seen HypnoDisc, it literally shreaded every robot it came up against, except ChaosII (which won the series). They had to sweap the area clear of dead robot bits!
How is this any different from OPEC or the like? If a group of companies act as a single company, especially to control the market, they should be treated as a single company, or more specifically a monopoly.
I think we started at one extreme (completely centralized mainframes) and swung to the other extreme (completely indepented pcs), and now we settling in a happy medium. People do not want to go back to having dumb terminals or thin clients, there are still to many things which can't be done well over the wire.
Witness the failure of Suns java station and Larry Ellison's net pc concept.
There is a place for both distributed and centralized setups, but for the majority of people having a compromise works well.
Do we really care about a marginal os? Everything has to start somewhere, otherwise we would all be condemned to the one os (I think you know which one I'm talking about:).
I agree with the above, dismissing this story is the same as dismissing the idea that microsoft is killing microsoft by trying to retain to much control.
I see where your going with this, but any serious code will be tested by people other that the people who developed it. This approach of testers trying to catch developers out and developers trying to avoid being caught out, does lead to a total quality ethos, and utimately better software.
In the article they talk about replacing 84 pentium III's with 750 crusoe's, approximately nine times the amount of processors for the same rack space.
I'm not sure how it all factors out cost wise, but on a space/performance base thats got to be a major gain. It also makes you realize why they are so badly after cpus that run cool.
What kind of moron moderates this as funny? The poster asked a genuine question in search of a genuine answer, not some pointless linux fud masquerading as humour.
This is not an issue to do with privacy, but rather our attitudes toward sex offenses.
If, as a society, we belive that these acts are a crime, then we should detain and punish the offenders. After that they should be released and allowed to get on with their lives unharrased.
However if we believe that these acts are phsycological disorder, then we should put people in secure facilities where they can be treated until they are no longer a threat. This would also allow for the detention of people who could be diagnosed with these conditions, protecting society before they comit any crimes.
I've just had to do an assignment on distributed parallel processing at uni, and this is absolutely correct. There are certain tasks which the latency just kills. i.e. you can do offline graphics rendering on a cluster, but even with gigabit ethernet, the latency would make realtime rendering suck.
This is why in the future, even with larger pipes, we will still be using thick clients for some tasks.
Are you insane? The conrinthians football (yes football, not soccar!) team is a commmerical venture, why should this individual get to keep a commerical domain name for a non-commericial website!! Thank god the "fine folks at WIPO" do enforce the principals of domain names.
I appreciate what your saying, but the flip side of making file sizes smaller is that you get better quality for the same bit rate. If they can make 64kbps mp3s sound like 128kbps (which I doubt!), the surely 128kbps will sound better!
Sony's new MZ-N1 MD player allows you to record MP3s or CDs at up to 32x speed.
Windows XP already ships with drivers for Firewire and there is a download for USB 2.0. Don't know what the situation with bluetooth is though.
Somebody mod this up, I laughed my ass off!

Where are my moderator points when I need them!! Having tested XP this is exactly how it works, mod the parent up!!

I definately agree, there are a few sites that I read avidly and would be prepared to pay a subscription for preferential access.
I think the hacking account thing is overrated, I wouldn't give out my account details cos' I want slashdot to benefit!!
On this note I've been hearing about the PayPal thing, does slashdot have one of these setup?
Only the simple things are instantaneous, anything worthwhile, in and out of the sphere of computing, takes time.
The project that I'm working on at the moment takes f'ing twenty minutes to do a full build, so bring on my 10Ghz 32 processor workstation!!!
Ahh, but you have to remember the Soviets where created by the American government as a way of controlling their citizens :)
Didn't you see 1984? The enemy doesn't really have to exist.

more importantly, why is this person watching a film in an incorrect aspect ratio?? Woo I like the thin tall people :)

Try moving to NTFS to get a maximum file size of 2 terrabytes :)

Microsoft already has a rather well developed product in ActiveSync which is currently on version 3.1. Sync's my jornada beautifully with outlook :)

Shouldn't that be "so who'd vote for you peasant?" :)
