    But you miss the point of Progress Quest. It's a satire of modern rpgs. What happens if you remove all the boring parts of modern mmorpgs? You end up with Progress Quest.

    Grinding is not gaming. Having fun is gaming.

    So if the guy only wants to do raids and doesn't care about leveling and getting equipments, why should he waste his time?

    If you only encrypt what is sensitive, you are flagging your communications as being important. If everything is encrypted, this protects even more your sensitive data. This is a good reason to push encryption everywhere.

    What irrelevance? AC said the only reason we were not inspecting real mail was that it was hard while it was easy to inspect digital mail. I countered by saying no, both are easy. I win against your irrelevance.

    Actually, it reminds me of a chatbot named Bucket. When people at 4chan heard of it, they started to use it and teach it. It became a complete mess filled with memes, bad jokes, racists comments, and everything you can think of.

    The fun thing to remember though is that when people discover old music, they usually discover the songs that aged well. Most of the songs back then were crap too.

    At the same time, when we open the radio, we listen to the good songs once in a while AND the crap most of the time. This is where the idea that old songs were much better is so popular. This is also true for movies.

    The dead players could become other things, like a local rebel farmer, or manage the airport or something.

    I love war simulators, but these are definitely not for those who want a quick adrenalin fix. War sims like ARMA II are like chess and arcade games are like a game of capture the flag. Completely different kinds of fun.

    We are a social animal. We have this need to be part of a group and we also tend to try to categorize others so that we can have a general idea of who they are.

    The guy likes sports? Jock. Jocks are supposed to act in a certain way so I suppose he will too. That's how humans think.

    That's how it works.

    And people don't prefer jocks to nerds. People like LEADERS. Jocks tend to become popular and lead groups, that's why they are "cool".

    If nerds had a winning and outgoing attitude like the quarterbacks, everyone who want to be a nerd.

    Not always.

    Some species were actually quite tasty but didn't produce as much fruits as others. Our modern watermelon is a good example. There are other more tasty melons out there but since the modern watermelon doesn't need as much care and produces more melon (more water inside), it is used and sold everywhere. A hundred years ago, the Montreal's melon was a great success and was being sold at crazy prices in New York. Good luck finding that melon now.

    Look at our strawberries! Gigantic fruits full of water! The smaller and more tasty varieties are not used anymore because people want big strawberries even though they are less tasty.

    Taste is NOT a very powerful adaptation.

    You know, I'm reading all of this and I'm starting to wonder if I'm really a libertarian. I considered myself a weak libertarian, but then I'm from Canada where we have universal healthcare. I wouldn't consider removing that.

    But then, our liberals want to have a nanny-state and our conservatives want to impose their morals on us... What am I if I want a really weak nanny-state that doesn't impose morals?

    I figured I was a weak libertarian.

    If not, what am I?

    Your answer clarifies the problem.

    I'm going to do a bit of politics myself and see if I can influence things then. I actually went to a town hall meeting this month for the first time. I know one person who is a municipal councillor and he invited me because of my interests in politics. I suppose we should all do this and slowly nudge the laws towards liberty ourselves. If most politicians want power for power's sake like you say, that would be the only way to change things.

    He did tell me that if I was really interested I could become influential with time, but that you had to know people that are already in the game to play it properly...

    Sad isn't it?

    But why do you hate the ideas? I'm a weak libertarian myself and find that personal liberty is important. Don't generalize and say all libertarians are extremists. We don't all want to abolish the government. I'm curious about your ideas since I feel a decentralized government that helps those who truly need it, while not having ideas to force upon you about religion and ethics (marriage, alcohol, etc) would be the best deal. This is libertarianism for you.

    Well, the classless interview sounds like the real world. We don't see things like "Level 6 teacher or more needed with a specialization in kids under 12". The interview starts to become roleplaying in itself when you are force to discuss your experiences. I agree this would be stupid in a game where people simply want to join in and bash nameless monsters though.

    Simply to add to my ideas... People could then filter searches by number of links, popularity (if tracked) and also by ratings. That would give different choices to explore the web.

    Would that really be bad? At first glance, yes. On the other hand, if Microsoft has tons of IP adresses compared to "Microsoft Sucks", then the first link would be the official website. Not a bad deal uh?

    Also, the search results would be based on links first and foremost, but with a rating you could get a better idea of what to select. I'm using http://www.ixquick.com/ and the first results are rated based on how many other search engines have these results in their top 10. Ratings can help and those by users could be useful. Or add the ratings to the search results without affecting the order in which they are listed?

    You are describing Shadows of Isildur, Armageddon and Harshlands. MUDs of course... Maybe you should try any of them and see if you enjoy it? Make sure you hang out at the bars at first though.

    I'm sorry but completely realistic games are quite fun thank you very much. This is why some of us like permanent death and all that. Instead of being stupid and fighting everything that moves, you get forced to speak intelligently and make sure not to anger anyone too much... like in real life! Try a RPI MUD for a change and see how fun it can be when you get the hang of it.
