To be fair, the "key-mashing no-thinking tank" wouldn't exist in any world... Even if you try to roleplay Obelix, you have this whole personality with dreams to act out besides wanting to bash everyone. Honestly this is why I looked at MUDs in the past year and why I am starting to really enjoy them compared to modern mainstream games. You always are a nobody and you still get amazing stories. The story might be about how you and your friend hunted a bear instead of how both heroes killed a dragon... Less heroic, but it forces you to keep your ego down.

Wow, you'd never be able to study large and varied populations then. You do have to understand that probabilities can bring a lot of useful hints as to how you should react after that. If you know that young men have 80% (made up) chance of shutting their brain down when they listen to a beautiful woman, you'd be able to decide to use females in you TV ads to sell your beer to males. Statistics in science can be VERY useful. And it's still science. If you start to break down your groups until you always get 100%, you'll never make it. Even individuals never always act in the same way. You can discover how they react most of the time though...

If you play a rpg, there are way more than 3 groups. An adventurer doesn't have to be a killer. I'd say modern rpgs are simply action games based around combat. The only real "rpgs" out there are muds like Shadows of Isildur, Armageddon and Harshlands. The only other option is to play a pen and paper rpg (over the net, or live). I actually started to discover muds myself and hope others join in the fun. Screw all these mainstream games!

To be more precise, cognitive dissonance is when you have at least two beliefs that oppose each others. The result is that you are feeling bad, stressed, etc. So yes, it is completely mental. If you act in a way that contradicts your beliefs and you don't realize it, then you wont feel bad about it.

For example, you might be religious and believe that sex is bad and that only bad people focus on sex while also having urges to have sex with certain persons that you meet. Another example is that you might believe that BDSM is immoral and only crazy people do it. Then, someday, you actually become interested in BDSM scenarios. So in both cases, you have a problem. Are you a bad person or not? This causes stress because of cognitive dissonance.

Changing your beliefs is only ONE way to cope with cognitive dissonance. If we go back to my examples, you start to believe that the persons that excite you are evil. It's not your fault, it's them who are dressing and moving in inappropriate ways. Or in the BDSM scenarios, you could start to fantasize that the other persons morally need to be punished so you are still a good religious person that doesn't hurt anyone for pleasure. You would simply be doing what must be done.

There are other ways to cope with cognitive dissonance, but I simply wanted to make your answer more precise. And, now that I'm checking it, the wikipedia article on the subject is not too bad http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance.
