Personally, I'd me more interested in seeing some of the projects that didn't pan out get the good olde opes source treatment. Warcraft Adventures is the one I'm speaking of specifically. While it's great to open source games that many of us still own and play; I think it'd me much more interesting to see these abandoned titles. Obviously the problem with releasing the source for D2, W3 and the like would be the security of Battle.net (unless the network code and BN protocol was taken out of course). So something in the interim like the abandoned title would be great. I mean, how great would it be if 3d realms gave us every version of DNF they developed along the way as a bonus when we do eventually get DNF? I think it's facinating to see how developers come along, not only in their successes; but also in their failures.

Cigarette taxes are fine, no one needs cigarettes to live by anyones stretch of imagination. You could make the same argument about junk food, but junk food is still food and people still need it to live. I can barely afford to feed myself as it is!

How he uses this to support his argument is mystifying. Using his logic I could argue that cars are doomed to failure because Miata's are too small for me to fit in.

Anyone who thinks 2D games are dead should really look into the indie PC scene though. Aquaria (IGF 2006 Winner) is a beautiful game; and there are many others in development. Heartforth Alicia features some of the best 2d graphics I've seen in a while. http://www.tigsource.com/ You can find a ton of awesome 2d games on there.

Maybe you don't want to wave your hands around, but for me; the fact that I can literally point at a target in an FPS and shoot makes me love it. Now if someone would just make a DECENT FPS I'd be stoked. That's been my main thing about the Wii since I learned of the controls. Give me Timesplitters 2 on the Wii (With the Wii controller, not the GC) and I'll cream my pants.

But yeah, I see your point. WiiWaggle != Gameplay. Shit, there's entire mini-game collections dedicated to waggling it. The problem is that they're selling, even the horribly gimmicky controls (Ultimate Alliance). Ninty kinda shot themselves in the foot by not including a classic controller with the system; you can bet that if they had, we would be seeing many more games that support it.

I fully believe in the controller though, it's the computer accessory of the year. I've been playing all sorts of games with it (Thanks to GlovePIE's scripting). Shit, even if you just want a wireless remote for your computer, the WiiMote is the way to go, as it's the cheapest on the market. If I can script decent controls for nearly everything, WTF is holding back Devs? They have software that LEARNS control schemes for crap's sake.

  19. Re:Rockstar hold the cards on The ESRB, Earmarks, and Manhunt 2 in Game Politics · · Score: 1

Except that from reports, it seems that the PS3 version is going to be the "definitive" version. Rockstar is having serious issues because they can't count on a Hard Drive being in the system; which essentially means no free swap space (Using the internal Hard Drive for memory swapping was a common thing on the original Xbox). The relatively small size of DVD's is also probably hampering development. Rockstar knows what they're doing of course, and they will/may have already find (found) a way around these problems; but it just sounds like they're doing first run code on the PS3. Then there's the issue of how much money they've spent making both versions. I wonder how long it will be until we see games for the X360 that require a Hard Disk.
