Oops, some bad wording on my behalf. But you are correct, such bad management is indeed a rarity in such large companies.

I have a Nexus One that I purchased straight from Google on ATT. I have no idea when the Android 2.2 update will land. I'd much rather have the Apple System where it is relatively straight forward to update the iPhone OS and you know when it will be released. As far as I can tell, some people on T-Mobile had theirs upgraded, but it seems kind of random.

Nope, Sony has them beat by a long shot. I too work in IT at a university. I ordered a Sony because a Faculty member really liked the looks of the computer and had to have it. Man, the start menu went halfway across the screen from all of the crap installed. Most of it was all of these useless multimedia stuff from Sony itself. Now I just order the Dell Latitudes, and they have a fairly clean image, but I always wipe and reimage them with our own University provided software.

  8. Is is just me? on Did the Netbook Improve Windows 7's Performance? · · Score: 1

Or is Windows 7 really not that different in terms of performance than Vista SP2? I tried the Beta on a machine of mine, and really saw no differnce. Well, Windows 7 booted faster, but after that they seemed pretty much the same in terms of the overall feel. The memory after bootup was essentially the same too, hovering right around 700MB.

  9. Windows 7 on Windows 7's Media Hype Having the Opposite Effect As Vista's · · Score: 1

I have used Windows 7 and for the most part it *is* the same as Windows Vista. Now you can tone down UAC, but under the hood I am pretty sure that not much has changed. On the system that I tested it on, after a fresh install, the system was eating up about 739MB of RAM, same as with Vista. So once again, if you don't have a dual core machine with 2GB of RAM and a decent video card, windows 7 will feel just like Vista.

You can connect multiple drives (or like me, a drive and a printer), but AFAIK you can't RAID multiple AirPort disks together.

And yes, I'd also kill for an Apple storage server. The current headless Windows box drives me nuts due to NTFS limitations, Linux (like Windows) has relatively poor AFP support, and the pre-built systems tend to under-perform with high prices. I've vaguely considered a Drobo attached to the APE, but it still suffers from USB drive performance levels even if it can handle the space without problem.

Umm Netatalk (AFP server) for Linux is awesome, pretty easy to configure and really fast. Check it out.

Even here in the US, where I work at a State University we see this dumbing down of science. For example, our College had one Organic Chemistry course that many science majors must take (ie Chem, Bio, Microbio). As many of you may know, chem courses (organic in particular) really weed out many of the weaker students. Some semesters up to ~40% of the students may drop or fail. So now they have come up with a watered down version of O Chem to stop the hemorrhaging of students. I have also heard the same thing for the Engineering Calculus series and the Engineering physics classes are also feeling the pressure from administration to pass more students, regardless if they learned the material.

Science and Math teachers should be payed more as teachers than non technical degrees. As a Chemistry major in College, I would always be a little envious of the Liberal Arts and Business majors who rarely have to take any difficult courses. While I would be suffering with two hard lab classes as the same time, in addition to non science course work, they would be cruising through four easy non lab courses. I think if you talked to any science/engineering/math majors they would feel the same way too. (I do think English and Lit majors do have to do a lot of work too)
