If you're talking about torrents, then I have one word: BitcoinTorrentz. Cheaper than a VPN, you get your torrented files over a standard port 80 HTTP connection (though it is NOT encrypted, if that makes a difference), and hey this is Slashdot so LOL ANONYMOUS MONEY for whatever that's worth.
For all other normal web traffic, yes your school is being very Draconian if they're blocking the likes of Hackaday. I mean hell, that's pretty much "Great Firewall Of China" levels of censorship there. I frankly don't know what you can do as a single person to try and change that, but know that most colleges in the US don't filter Internet traffic at all, so your IT admin is almost certainly on a power trip if he's implementing these sorts of policies.
Science isn't broken after all! Or at least, thousands of experiments are still fundamentally "correct" to the best of our current scientific knowledge.
(note however that they still need to re-do the neutrino test, according to the last sentence of TFA; at the moment they have merely found out that "data" sent over the fiber-optic cable arrives 60ns earlier then assumed)
It's great that they managed to extend the Corona jailbreak to the iPhone 4S. But unfortunately, very soon all their hard work will be rendered useless once iOS 5.1 hits release. As 5.1 is already in the beta-testing stage, there's only a window of a few weeks before it drops. Unlike iOS 4 and below, there is currently no way to downgrade any iPhone to an earlier version of iOS5. The SHSH method does not work anymore because of something new on Apple's end (I believe involving something called an "AP Ticket" but I honestly haven't looked into it very deeply).
The point is, if you want to make use of this jailbreak, you must go to iOS 5.0.1 RIGHT NOW and jailbreak or you won't get another chance until 5.1 is hacked, which is of course never guaranteed.
I was kinda using the "Good luck, I'm behind seven proxies!" meme with the subject line there, not necessarily trying to be technologically accurate, heh.
After Operation Payback (the widespread use of LOIC against Bank of America, PayPal, and other entities that refused to process payments to Wikileaks), the FBI got involved. Raids were made. A freshman student at my own college was raided and had all his electronics taken away, and that was just for passively being an operator in an IRC channel that coordinated the attacks, not even running the tool himself.
As an above poster said, LOIC is not anonymous. I hope these script kiddies aren't so foolish as to make the same mistakes twice.
That's... honestly surprising. I mean wow. I guess you're right in saying that it depends on where you live. My fellow scouts may have failed out of college like I did or passed with flying colors, with or without drugs. But I would never believe them to be future KKK members or leaders. Mind == blown.

See the subject line. I'm an Eagle Scout and I'll acknowledge that that badge doesn't really account to much in the technical world, but I must protest to the idea that Boy Scout badges are worthless. At least the merit badge booklets can provide a decent crash-course session on many subjects for less than $5.
Being an Eagle Scout got me my first few jobs. The First Aid and knot-tying skills I learned have continued to be useful throughout my adult life. Your "playfull riff" is offensive, sir anonymous reader.
I think most here would agree that lobbying in and of itself is corruption to begin with. A congressional aide becoming a lobbyist to influence his or her former colleagues? Even moreso. Yeah yeah, they have a one-year "cooling off" period in which they can't directly lobby them, but that's hardly the point. All that does is remove the issue from the public eye long enough that the corruption is forgotten by the time it can legally begin.
The Politico article linked above notes that this [...] may not be directly corrupt
The Politico article only states that this act is completely legal, not that it isn't directly corrupt. There's a difference between the two.
Sorry, but the Tech world has been somewhat insulated from the recession, and finding a job in CS/IT isn't that hard right now. If you're stuck at Zynga, there might be a reason.
As someone who's been following this merger bid for the past ~6 months, I must say, woot! Even if you disagree with the outcome here, the fact that there's finally been some sort of conclusion to this case is reassuring.
Opting out of that was one of the first things I did to my BoA account, though granted this was a few years ago. They might have made it more difficult to do since then; I wouldn't know.
To be fair, from what I hear it was a condition that Comcast themselves offered. Of course, one could then go ahead and say that they had no choice but to offer such a program in order to gain approval for the deal in the first place, so I guess in the end it's a moot point.
As mentioned before, the launch isn't exactly new, and it was a provision of the NBC/Comcast merger. Nevertheless, it has gotten more attention than usual in the past day or two. Here's an alternative viewpoint, heavily biased against Comcast but still worth reading (at least in my opinion): http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Highlights-10-Broadband-in-DC-116216
Forgive the e-peen waving here, but I've actually emulated a GBA emulating a GBC emulating an NES before (only worked with like 5 specific NES games but still). You could easily take it a few more chains up if you really tried. I know there is a proof-of-concept GBA emulator for the DS, and a DS emulator for the Wii, and a Wii emulator for the computer, but I don't know at which point this particular sequence would break.
To give a technical answer, in GSM systems (like AT&Ts), text messages go over the voice channel, not the data channel. It's similar to data going over a 56k modem (aka, modulated onto the analog phone line) vs data going over a broadband connection (digital end-to-end).
Change the User id. Not sure how easy that is to do on an iPhone
I know it's possible when you jailbreak. I have a "UAFaker" icon on my SBSettings menu. I swipe the status bar, tap the icon, and try the link again. Same thing to turn it off.
Without jailbreaking, I believe there are alternate browsers you can get on the App Store that will fake the user agent for you. Or you could use Opera Mini or Cloud Browse, but that's getting somewhat excessive.
Pre-emptive defense: replace "at all" with "nearly as much" in that second paragraph.

And fifty cent pieces too, though I see those in circulation less rarely than the dollar coins even.

Maybe not dual-boot, but look into Open iBoot. Android on iPhone hardware has been done before.

Mod parent up.
"Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? It is the sound of... inevitability."
Simple solution: don't buy Apple.
(I honestly don't even know if I'm trolling with this statement or not anymore)
If you weren't already at +5 Insightful, I would mod you up.

Here's an interesting thread from last week arguing the exact opposite: http://tech.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=2541284&cid=38150514

Indeed. Furthermore, check out Jon Stewart's take on it. Over the top as always, but still helps put things in perspective. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-18-2011/world-of-class-warfare---the-poor-s-free-ride-is-over

Waze does this, and it's part of the reason I like using it, even if its navigational skills aren't all that good overall.
