I think Bill Gates will get off the hook precisely because of his efforts to promote his image. Look at Carnegie and Rockefeller, those guys were devils and thanks to their libraries and a few donations they are considered heroes. Like Gates they took a ton from the public good, put a little back in, and in the end got preferential treatment in the public eye. Nothing much has changed since then.

The Deniers never really cared about silly things like evidence, or the opinions of pretty much every expert in the field. The whole "Climategate" was just a warm fuzzy excuse to be proud of their intellectual bankruptcy. Now that this red harring is off the table I hardly expect these enlightened thinkers to change course and face reality. Thank god I have some karma to burn, because I'm certain there will be a denier with modpoints.

  6. WTF Google? Think of the little guy. on Adobe Flash Now Officially a Part of Google Chrome · · Score: 1, Flamebait

Don't get me wrong, Google has done a lot to push good open web standards, but this decision is one to cater to the masses instead of leading them. Flash needs to die. I love the web, but I also love obscure BeOS based OSS operating systems- which while Chrome doesn't support, its marketshare certainly influences the web sites we ALL visit. If Google starts bundling Flash, then it becomes even more "required" than it already is. I know I'm not alone here especially with the influx of new mobiles and mobile OS's that struggle with the same problems us alternative OS people do.

Most of the people against healthcare reform are not racists, but most of the so called "Tea Partiers" seem much more suspect. Just turn on the TV and watch these people- they are the one's shutting down the debate.

If you ask me only in the last year or so have 3G radios become efficient enough to be usefull daylong in something like a phone. If WiMax/"4G" is like early 3G headsets it will likely last an unreasonably short amount of time on a charge. But hey if I'm wrong sign me up!

I may be missing something, and feel free to tell me. But I have no problem with donors being higher on the list. It makes sense to reward altruism in society and this certainly fits the bill. Sure some religions might interject, but just like organ donation religious practices are a choice and like every choice they carry consequences. That's not to say non-donors shouldn't get organs, but they should not be the priority.

Sounds to me like with the exception of the (possibly) the last bullet point those kind of ads should be banned. They play into people's fears and constant need to "enhance" themselves. These companies are just hoping to make us all hypochondriacs and it seems to be working sadly. The ins and outs of various diseases and medicines should be left to the expert, the doctor, not some half-brained twit who rots their brain watching hours and hours of pharma ads.

  20. Nokia avoids key markets. on LG's Windows Phone 7 Series Early Prototype · · Score: 2, Insightful

The thing about Symbian is that it really isn't a "global" player despite having a large marketshare. No matter what you think about the US it is a primary source of SW development as well as hype and branding. Nokia for some unknown reason has essentially abandoned the American market starting about 5 years ago. You can find them here and there but back in the day everybody owned a Nokia. Today it just simply isn't on the radar of Americans or more importantly the significant American software and services companies. You won't for instance ever see a Nokia featured in American TV or films. The smartphone industry is in many ways a popularity contest ignoring a significant market, especially one as culturally influential as the US is just plain dumb. Hopefully they will smarten up but until then the hype and interested will be on RIM, Apple, and Google. Mindshare is powerfull stuff.
