When I switched from Windows to a Mac, I had absolutely ZERO compatibility issues.
When the large multi-national corporation I work for switched all its developers from Windows to Mac, our productivity skyrocketed.
Windows is such a piece of crap that its users assume that the constant threat of viruses, trojans and other malware is just part of life. In fact, it's part of the terrible architecture that is Windows.
I disagree 1000% with your premise that Windows is the only way to universal compatibility.

His message is propaganda! If you know that this Farhad Manjoo has a history of flacking for Microsoft, it shows that his viewpoint is NOT objective. If Steve Jobs tells you that Apple makes great products, does the message count more than the messenger? No! Unless you're an idiot, you ALWAYS consider who the messenger is. Why are people still wasting their time on Microsoft? I gave up on them a long time ago and have not regretted it. The corporation I work for switched all developers to Macs. What a joy. The State of Washington and its taxpayers have spent a pretty bit of coin providing an educated workforce for Microsoft, by creating all the infrastructure such as the electric utilities, the roads, the police, fire and the rest. Without all of these public services, companies like Microsoft would be much, much less profitable.
If these companies are so hell bent not to pay taxes--then why don't they move to Russia? When I lived there, zero taxes were taken from my pay. Companies paid hardly any taxes. Oh yeah, they had to pay the Russian Mafia because the tax-starved government had no power.

I agree. I have a website: freejavalectures.googlepages.com that contains no ads of any kind and it has a google page rank of 5/10 worldwide. I have spent exactly $0 dollars on it. Then you go to most other tutorial-style sites and they are jammed with ads with a tiny bit in the center given over to dribs of content.
Anyone like me who has published a paper newspaper knows that it is all about circulation. Every additional cent that you charge for a copy of your publication does not increase your profits. Instead, it decreases your circulation.
Point in fact: when I lived in Omaha, Nebraska I bought a copy of the New York Times every day and read it on the treadmill.
Now, I live in New York City where the New York Times costs $2.00 a copy. I have bought it about three times at that price.
In short, micropayments is a sure way to send people somewhere else for the news.
This comes as no surprise, given that any human being has three brains in action:

By this same logic, when our sun lines up with the plane of the milky way at 11:11am on Dec 21st, 2012, we should beware the tunnel of gravity that suddenly hits us. By the same logic that allows these gravitational tubes to exist, it makes complete sense that we should fear that 26,000 year occurrence. Who knows what will happen when we face that.
