I am happy they understand that making shows like this available online (and free) is a good promotional/ marketing tool. However I am sad because I have already bought the DVD collections for the past 10 seasons...
My guess is that all of his information will be floating around the internet pretty soon, for the most part providing universal back-up:p
However funny this may seem though, it really isn't. Prior to becoming 'computer savvy' I had a computer which I had been using as primary storage for documents and digital photographs. For some reason Windows crashed one day, and I couldn't fix it.
After this incident, I learned that the need to use backup is mandatory and running a redundant backup routine is key. For instance, use a script to backup daily to an external hard drive, and weekly to an internal server for the household. This way, should the local backup get fried, one could grab the info from the server. If one wanted to do it properly, backing up to an external server routinely is more ideal -- but then upload speed can be prohibitive.
Mr. Coppola should be commended for the use of backup since there are far too many people who don't know just how important it is. I feel for him, and hope he gets his backup returned.
If it was a slam on the government, Spider man wouldn't have had 'depression' but rather an 'economic downfall'. Also, there's no way superheroes could beat Bush and Cheney because, they make their own laws, much in the same fashion that they make their own separate branch of the government.
So all the superheroes would be sitting around saying 'next year can only get better, right?'
Let's just toss Oprah Winfrey, and Martha Stewart on a one-way ship, and let them terraform the planet. Sure, me may not actually want to live on a planet designed by two self-righteous, kazillionairres. But the only thing we risk to lose are a couple of crappy TV shows.
If they want to send Rosie O'Donnell, and Donald Trump, then we actually are starting to make a positive shift in Earth's environment.
Now, if we could only ship off those ladies from 'the View'...
I would like to point out that I am a Mac user, and one of those rare nuts that participates at a Mac users group down at my local library; where we both provide free support to people who want it, but more importantly we help people who have just gotten Macs and want to learn how to use them.
What I would like to say is that while Safari is a fine browser, it is not a GOOD browser. It lacks quite a number of very useful features, that leads many people to choose Camino over it. There are add-ons that can be purchased, but those are not 'Safari', and they are not going to be part of the Safari experience Windows users will experience should they even bother to try.
It is too bad that Safari was released for another platform, because it really doesn't represent the functionality and flexibility that so many other great applications do on the Macintosh platform.
What this really states more than anything is that Apple need to look BEYOND page rendering, and start adding features so that Safari can compete with; Firefox, Camino, Opera, and yes even Internet Explorer 7.
I was reading one of Dr. Hawkings writings, and he specifically addressed this issue, and described very nicely what some of the possibilities were, should this kind of technology ever become reality.
One of the interesting ideas is that since you would have every possible particle of information about an object, or person -- that you would not only be able to transport things, but also duplicate them much in the same fashion that a computer can copy and duplicate files.
Wow! You know you have a lot of power when you can tell congress to directly protect your interests. Think about it this way:
Since when did Congress get into being the personal police enforcement unit of the RIAA?
If that isn't the equivalent of being RIAA's bitch, I don't know what is.
If only RIAA would use their power for good, instead of evil. Maybe they could have congress bid for world peace, or getting healthcare for everyone in the United States, or maybe even tackling corruption, inflation, or increasing minimum wage... oh wait!! That's what congress is SUPPOSED to be doing!! My bad:(
God I hope that Microsoft never gains ground in the internet application area. With them pushing non-compliant code in Internet Explorer version after version, just image what they would do if they had control of any development, and utilization applications.
But to shoot ashes into space, while knowing they will return anyway, and first viewing an unsucccessful launch (ugh), what's the point? Glad it worked this time, having to return a third time, only to do it all over again... that might have been hard for the relatives. It would be especially hard for the relatives, if the ashes were in a labelled package with the person's name on it. Imagine how they would feel if someone reported finding their loved ones ashes on the ground somewhere in the middle of some town, where they were supposed to be in space.
Captain Kirk [on bridge]: Sulu, what is that thing floating in space? Sulu: I don't know Sir. Kirk [pointing]: well, zoom in on it, and see if we can find out what it is! Sulu: okey dokey!
Sulu zooms screen in, writing on package becomes visible Kirk: zoom in on that writing, it says something!! Sulu: Yessir
[PACKAGE WRITING]: OMFG!! This is so L33t!! I got mah ashes dropped in space. Take that Kirk, you friggin Lassie!! I so roXoRZ1071 -0- You've been PWned!
Many people WANT to see the underdog(s) (Linux, Macintosh) gain ground and market share from the distribution of a large number of computers, and begin a movement to displace Microsoft. However, if you look at this project from a pragmatic perspective one would need to remove personal desires from the picture.
The primary goal is to provide acceptable, useful computers to people. If Microsoft is willing to donate their operating system for free, then this should be factored in. However, the additional requirements necessary to run Windows XP would change the computer considerably.
For those who don't know it, Linux comes in many flavors and has far lower requirements than Windows. The people involved in this project know this too.
This does not mean that an actual effort to find out the difference in requirements on **THIS** computer to run Windows should have anyone getting concerned. They are just answering the question:
"With this computer as it is now, exactly what changes (and how much more money) would be required to make it run Windows?"
This is a reasonable question, and one that any smart project manager would want to know the answer to. This is not your run of the mill 'minimum requirements', but rather a realistic and accurate minimum requirements for this computer.
Trust me, someone is going to ask the question. Maybe a government, maybe some ignorant government IT person somewhere, or a politically motivated official. But someone WILL ask the question, and if they don't know the answer, they would need to go back and either fudge it or find it out.
So knowing the answer before someone asks the question shown good planning, and project management.
Cheney is easily one of the most evil fascists of the last 100 years. Profiteering enormously from this war, and milking the USA out of its resources have transcended into a sick sport of his.
If I were to guess, this sick bastard probably has middle-class Americans lay down in front of him everywhere he goes so he doesn't get his $3000 shoes dirty.
Impeachment is not enough for this guy, we need a real punishment. For starters, how about taking away ALL of his money, and forcing his to live like the rest of us Americans?
I think this is the most accurate way I have ever heard the way an OS SHOULD work --:D nice description. I would piggyback on your sentiment though by saying that the operating system should be:
a means to navigate easily to applications and/or documents/files I need to use - pretty much that is what a good OS does
invisible when users are using applications. What I mean by this is that (like you said) when checking my email, I should have all the tools I need to to so, with a method to leave that application when I am done. The OS shouldn't interfere or intrude on my activities.
fast and reliable - it should be able to perform all of its necessary functions well.
So if you really quantify what an OS should be, I would suspect that pragmatic people really just want to work or play, NOT sit and stare at or play with the OS itself all day.
This sounds just like the story of the M16 vs. the AK47. The M16 is a much better gun, designed to be much more sophisitcated. But in the end, it ends up being worse because tight tolerances cause it to jam up, and require cleaning all the time, where-as the AK47 will fire under just about any conditions. The AK47 is also heavier which is really nice when you get into hand-to-hand combat and you can just whack the other guy with it.
Um, I agree and disagree with you, so let me add to what you posted. The m16 has a receiver that jams easily no question about that, but the m16 has gone through numerous modifications over the decades to make it more tolerant to foreign material -- still has a tendency to jam, but nowhere near the levels seen during Vietnam which was where it was first discovered what a prissy bitch this rifle is.
Where I disagree with you is on the weight. Nobody gives a crap about being able to whack a guy with their rifle, but rather how it fatigues you when carrying it in the ready position (which is like 80% of the time). Cutting one pound weight is enough to make people pee their pants in joy, and in reality makes little difference in hand to hand combat (which is approximately 0% of the time, and if it isn't you're probably not reading this because you're dead).
What soldiers care about are; reliability, accuracy, and weight -- in that order.
While conventional oscillator circuits may be nonlinear systems, submicron research has been performed at the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) and has focused on hemi-quazmatron acceleration under free radical assignment projection. While this sounds like a lot of bunk terminology, it is actually where the future lies for this field. The UCLA HSSEAS has often proven a valuable partner in this research, and has taken a slightly different approach this to research.
Regardless, pushing sub-millimeter frequency into the audio sphincter is always difficult because it runs counter to the way it should be. Simply put, things should be emitted FROM the sphincter, and not entered into it. However, when using sub-millimeter waves, the sphincter cannot contract. The scientific name for this is an 'audio rim jobe' -- after Dr. Heigh Liek ScrimJobes from the Netherlands.
Furthermore, research has shown that massaging the audio sphincter often causes it to relax. The only problem is that Dr ScrimJobes discovered the audio sphincter is in his pants, and that only women can massage it.
Microsoft wanted to penalize Mac users over the use and development of Microsoft Office, and this really isn't much different - except that there is no point for a Mac user to use Vista.
I use Parallels desktop to run Windows XP, which runs all current software that I use on Windows (no surprise), and to test web designs in Internet Explorer when I don't want to go to a regular Windows PC.
So since Windows XP can already serve to run the apps anyone would need to run, other than the news factor, Vista s of no consequence to any Mac user.
There was a time when the internet was first implemented, that it was necessary to use available means to communicate. One of those methods was a copper wire used for the telephone, which hs been used in excess of 100 years.
These days, copper wire is no longer practical or viable, much like the incandescent light-bulb. Now we have fibre optics, and satellite signals etc.
It's about damn time this move has started to gain wind.

They ARE talking about Scooter Libby, right?
So all the superheroes would be sitting around saying 'next year can only get better, right?'
And we thought that show was a comedy, when in fact it was the first reality show ever.

Spooky..
hmm, I use Linux because it's cool...and free. Also, my computer-geek friends would beat me up if I didn't use it :p
I rub it in, but I predicted this when it was originally posted that they were doing this. Read my post here --> http://science.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=232687 &cid=18920769

This is both scary and sad.
Do you think they would feel scammed?

This needs to happen all over the U.S. in order to bring change to Microsoft and its tactics.
