pathetic, and pretty shameful that I have to share a gender with pricks of that magnitude, but it's not as if ignorance discriminates based on skill in a field. it's the willful idiocy that really gets to me./disgust
this is exactly what these guys did when they got hassled by Games Workshop (who are notorious wankers when it comes to this stuff, I hear). They made a tribute / fan game recreating the Space Hulk board game, maybe a decade plus after the last Space Hulk game IP had been released...
They changed the name to Alien Assault, tweaked some art assets and any specific universe references, and now they're completely in the clear. It's the EXACT same game, just minus the free promotion for Games Workshop.
(only games workshop thing I have is the deluxe edition 20th anniversary edition of Space Hulk which I got myself for Christmas, largely on word of mouth merits via boardgamegeek.com and playing this little gem of a game. and yet they hit the geek with a cease and desist awhile back too -- it was on slashdot...)
just...
wow. they don't just look a gift horse in the mouth, they actually pull out the shotgun and put one between its eyes for good measure.
death by bureaucracy... department of broadband communication. are you fucking kidding me?
this is the kind of idiocy that was generally historically corrected by violent revolution... sigh.
gg Australia, way to self-immolate in the present tense. it was nice knowing you, I guess. thanks for all the fish, or whatever condolences I'm supposed to offer.
this site really reads like the best parody ever written...
which should horrify me somewhat, I suppose. does this mean I'm growing up and ready to face the modern world? (21 years old here, university student in Ottawa);)
thank you for writing this! I am a Christian with a bent towards deeply personal faith such that I choose not to impose it on others... and this blending of geek humour with religion is delightfully scathing! I want to hug you for it:3
I never really knew much about Crohn's disease until your posts in this thread. Just never encountered it before, I guess.
I'll look into donating a bit of my student budgeted cash to the CCFC as you referenced it. I can easily forgo the occasional binge drinking session for your sake, so the relatively tiny amount I spend on beer / liquor will most appropriately go to that. It'll be easier on my stomach, for one... and perhaps a bit on my conscience, with a bit of empathy on the side.
I can't imagine what it's like to have to go through that, but I sincerely hope your quality of life improves. Don't know if I have my email listed, but you seem like a cool fellow Canuck. Props to you for being a stronger spirit than I likely could manage.
my parents did what you're prescribing, oddly enough. and yeah, I'm gonna go with the "hell no, that would probably hurt like a motherfucker" school of thought, seeing as I have the option... and it just sounds painful.
whether or not that's a conclusion arrived at via reason or emotion, it's a choice they wanted me to make when I was old enough to understand... and much as you assumed, I declined:)
And then they didn't make nearly enough copies of Space Hulk available. I wanted to buy one, but I don't follow these things religiously, and only found out after all the preorders were gone. I guess that's what I get for being nonobsessive, and a student with out tons of money to buy one of the inflated copies after the fact.
Needless to say, it sucked, and they're being overzealous / ridiculous by attacking fansites and wanting them to remove all traces of dedication to a franchise that they no longer support. I would've never known about how great this game was if it wasn't for perusing BoardGameGeek in the first place!
If people are showing an interest in your product 15-20 years after it has been released, perhaps you should, oh, I don't know, revive it at for a few years! Why does it have to be this limited print run only bullshit -- I know, economics, and they can do whatever they want, but they would've made more money if they made more copies of the damn game! If not from the game itself, then from crossover sales (i.e. getting me interested in their overall product lines by proxy) it's not as if the preorder didn't sell out months in advance. Why not say, hey, these people want our game. Let's run a quadruple batch of this, put some in actual stores, see how it goes? I can't explain it.
I don't like that they're just sitting on it, but that's entirely their decision to make, and they won't get my money for it. I've never owned a product of theirs in my life, but I've heard such good things about Space Hulk I'd pay $80-100 for a mass produced, solid quality version. I think a fair number of other people would too. *shrugs* their loss.
I thought the woman lived in Canada... y'know, where I'm from:p
I too, suffer from depression. I'm in a low cycle right now, and hopefully when the wheels of bureaucracy turn, I'll get the proper help this time. I think I'm starting to appreciate the extent to which it's affected me over the years -- hopefully a psychiatrist and proper treatment will help me understand and know how to deal with it so I can get on with life somehow.
You'd be surprised how jaded some medical professionals can get regarding mental illness. I understand why they get that way. It's no comfort whatsoever to someone who has ended up in the hospital due to panic attacks resulting in a possible loss of control which may well have ended in suicide.
In my current state of mind, I'm finding it so hard to do even the simplest things, so I'm mostly waiting on a proper diagnosis. Here's hoping it'll come sooner rather than later.
Robert J. Sawyer is pretty good, from what I remember. His Hominid books were pretty interesting, but I don't know how "hard sci-fi" that is... (probably not very)
isn't the fun of sci-fi in playing with the hypothetical and bending the rules anyway?
don't let Sony marketing hear you! or they might come up with more crazy ads... anyone remember the ps3 baby one? man, that was surreal and horrifying all at once:)
Try getting some of the game balancing modifications before giving up. Judging by what my friends have told me, Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul is king. It makes the game playable as a pure spellcaster, for example... And I think it has minimal level scaling -- or at least, zoned areas that are relatively static.
that'd be great. I remember they added a patch / tweak to System Shock 2 that removed spiders entirely for people with arachnaphobia... I seem to remember that they also had a spawn timer adjustment as well. I wish I could've set that to off by default, and still had the difficult at normal / hard.
The game was creepy enough without wanting to back track / hang around for fear that more dudes would show up... there has to be a finite number of enemies on the ship, right?:)
I can, and it's a fantastic and fun song. You should've asked me!:3
I'm classically trained but thoroughly enjoy fiddle music. Nothing is quite as crowd pleasing in a pinch, and it's great at parties. If I could play some Paganini perhaps, then maybe I'd stick to straight classical, but that stuff is bloody difficult.:)
Try OtterBox cases. They're pretty much indestructible for all basic needs, airtight so dust and water stay out, etc.
They have a 4th gen version out right now. The "Armor" version, the most expensive one, is the one you want if you're looking for something heavily durable. I have a 2nd Gen nano case and it's utterly fantastic. I've swam with it and everything.
I was just in an Apple store for the first time the other day (in Ottawa), and needless to say, beyond alarm locks, I don't think there was anything else securing the items in the shop. At least, that's all that were on the iPhones, I didn't look too hard at the rest of the stuff.
And nothing was locked behind cases. It was very odd in that it's not like any other computer store -- just hardwood tables and Apple electronics on them, with a massive double sided shelving unit in the middle of the store, and similar hardwood tables at the back with the registers hidden from sight -- which is probably why it was so busy. People like the sense of self-importance the Apple brand gives them. I'm willing to be it looks cleaner and friendlier to the average person.
and hey, I'd rather they get an Apple computer if they're not willing to take certain precautions to keep viruses and crap off their system. Heck, even when you know what you're doing, a Windows system is sometimes irreparably hosed...
It wasn't just that it was insanely well balanced, it's also that Blizzard patched it over the years as exploitable game mechanics came about. It could be argued that the constant focus on balancing and rebalancing the game, as well as listening to the community from pros on down is what made Starcraft a perfectly balanced game.
(for an RTS -- I suck horribly at micromanaging so TBS is more my bag)
Seriously though, an Apple "netbook" tablet style PC with a reasonable size screen (10" maybe?) with gestureriffic stuff and some nice note taking software would be awesome. I'd probably even preorder one... and I've never owned an Apple PC before.:-)
Ahhh, Slashdot. Where a discussion about the fascinating laws of physics devolves into a discussion about insurance law. :3
if this is at all indicative, I can't say I blame you for leaving.

Fuck you.
We've been opposed to this shit since the beginning of your so-called "reforms," and now you go one further and try to make it even more draconian?
And you wonder why I have no qualms subverting your business model and giving money in a more direct manner to the artist instead.
Then Microsoft will be happy to follow suit!
