Flame wars can sometimes be pretty good. Forces people to have to explain what they mean etc, which is good. Just go find an article with Linus and see what he has to say. I can't remember it correctly, but if I remember correctly he was pretty stern and didn't accept anything without a good explaination.
So disagreeing can be very good (as long as personal feelings aren't involved. That is never good), but getting two products might not...
You have pinpointed the absolutely biggest strength with Windows. You will always have the same controls, things will be where you assume them to be, the clipboard will work, COM works, DirectX works, there is one win32(64) etc etc etc.
So how come diversity is bad in this case? Because it's confusing and counterproductive. It uses a lot of development time that could have been better spent on one better solution that is taken to a mature state.
If KDE/Gnome wants to make certain protocols etc comming, that's nice as long as nobody is left out. But I would never accept two desktopsystems on my computer. I'd rather see more work on KDE/QT.
If you want Linux to be sold with home computers, this is what you need:
One desktop with a good set of standard applications and tools
A good office suite
Good support 24/7 that you can trust
A much better packaged product
All subsystems should have the same release proceedueres as KDE, this more than anything includes the kernel. It absolutely has to be stable and be as free from bugs and holes as possible at each release point. The system won't be updated if it requires compiling the kernel and configing it.
A dead simple upgrade/patch system. Use Konqi, have a little blinking thing on the screen saying "new stuff" and make everything upgradable.
Kill off all diversity in formats for configuration files, add a reposatory (done the right way, think of it as a database. And put everything in files instead of one huge one, it forced me to reinstall my XP, pissed me off to no ends) and make it simply to configure. If I know what I want to change I shouldn't have to read the help.
Write help files for everything in the system. And that includes everything from "how do I set the keyboard to Swedish" to "I want to know what this obscure error message from g++ means".
There you go, there you have a list. A lot of the ground work is done, and some of the work is being done as I sit here and wriet. But now it just requires more work, people disagreeing, people agreeing and much much more work (see why we don't want five more GUI systems etc etc).
See it as a MacOS X killer if you want to ^_^ Heck, I wished I had time to do this myself. Guess you should mail me if you can muster a 1,000 coders, including the kernel and KDE people. Should sell it (and support people) to Compaq, HP, Dell, etc to include in their new spiffy computers. Including a DVD with all the binaries and source (eat that M$!).
Well, I sure wish I knew. But I personally don't belive in emulating windows to grown market share. What MacOS X needs is it's own browser comming in the package, a strong MacOS X office suite that rocks, a nicer company backing it up and tons and even more tons of support for developers. I can't say for sure that this would make it more competetive, just that this is what I belive.
Apple did the right thing when they started to use nVidia btw. They need to show that they are an alternative if they want to survive.
What good will a win32 emulator do? Let's face it, I rather run real Windows XP than something engineering as an aftermath. Look at OS/2 and what running windows programs did to it. MacOS X needs software written for MacOS X, with the look and feel of MacOS X, and doing things as MacOS X programs do. Anything else is not going to save the Mac...
If anything, I'd say that all home hackers should think about writing programs for MacOS X, there is a huge possible market out there, and it's not saturated to the brink of destruction such as the windows market is. M$ is doing the best thing for the consumer when they are bundling a bunch of software (it's cheaper, less hassle, and the software works good enough for most people), I am sure Apple would do it even more if they could, and they are already doing it. But they lag behind, so I don't see it as MacOS X having a shortage of software, I see it as a way to make money. But then again, I'm a software engineer and not a buyer of Apples;)
Ehm, wops. I think you just made a little misstake ^_^ But enough wisecracks (sp?). What people can do is to buy the original japanese DVD (which is usuall of pretty nice quality) and then when they play it they use homemade subtitles. I won't go into the techniques, the anime junkies knows it well enough and probably better than me. But unless I have missunderstood something, it is illegal to do a translation and then spread it.
The Japanese production companies would without a question make a profit if they added English subtitles (but nothing more) and sold them region free, but that is another story.
I guess I just wanted to write about it. I kinda had the feeling this would happen. I and many with me loves this show, but they haven't ordered more. I don't like many shows, and most I start to find boring before I come to the 10th episode. I still get all excited when there is a new Futurama out. I've seen them all, I ordered my Futurama DVD Box today (already got the Simpsons one of course) and I hunger for more. And this is what happens. I hope they move both Simpsons and Futurama to a nicer network, but I do wonder what will happen with the DVDs then.
.*?BSD and Linux does just about the same thing. AIX, IRIS, and Solaris also does just about the same thing, roughly. We have seem motions that companies release their software as open source instead, for example XFS. There has also been work done the other way around, where non open source companies use open source software.
What that in mind, what do you want Sun to do as far as software as a whole goes. Should they take all that is good with Solaris, open source it and try to unfied it as one OS that Sun will use, or will there only be certain pieces of software that will be open sourced?
What kind of bitrates does it support, what does it really save, what kind of quality, and why should I ever want to see anytyhing compressed with anything from real.*?\? And why can't I connect it to my computer and won't all nice satelite recievers have this from the beginning anyways?
The idea is really great, but we all knew that since before;)
Hell yes. This whole dam is just one huge stupid egotrip. I am not impressed a bit by this. It's a shame the smart people and good technology is needed to move something which shouldn't need to be moved at all. I would rather see they do something more useful with these good resources.
It's enough that a few people figure out how to copy the data and convert into mp3s, then the wonderful invention of the internet will take care of the rest. This is only stopping normal people from enjoying the music (my advice is to just simply stop buying CDs all together). I simply don't like their tactics, and I don't like the attitude.
Just my little opinion, but I think that an HD-DVD is needed (and skip the zones please) to make HDTV more worth it. Then we could speak about home cinema, as DVDs can't compare to the upcomming digital cinemas, and not to 35mm film (70mm and 135mm... well, you know).
I would get an HDTV, but I am like many on/., a technology nut;)
Miyazaki is a master story teller, and for those who are willing to embrace the media they are in for an emotional ride. Some might never find it interesting at all, others like me will be amazed by the stories he tells. It's a shame that Studio Ghibli themselves are not subtitling and dubbing (even though I will never be able to stand them) the movies to release them into the west.
So to give you all a chance to have something to do until the next installment of LotR, go out and see if you can find one of Miyazaki's movies and maybe, just maybe, you can also find what I found, a treasure worth keeping in your heart.
I bet that there will be at least 100 posts saying that you can't trust this kind of data, that it's complete bollocks and yada yada yada Linux is so good it will for Bill to eat Linus used shorts.
Please don't care about that article, it's not interesting really. It's not really news. We all know what we use ourselves (XP and linux in my case) and I suggest that our time should be spent on something better than surveys and such things.
Writing serious and useful documentation for linux for instance, and putting it into XML and making it readable and searchable in different applications (such as the exellent Konqi, the only other browser besides IE I would ever dream of using). Go do that instead of reading all the pointlessness that this news consists of.
There is already a stealth boat produced, and I am quite sure that it is not a secret. How do I know? Because I've seen it myself, and so has a lot of other people. Check out Smyge on google and you will know what I mean.
Why aren't we then run over with these things? My guess is for the same reason as the US airforce doesn't only fly F117 (which I've also seen live ^_^) and B2s and why YF22/YF23 (dunno if they changed the designation) won't take over quite yet. Cost. We are talking about very expensive pieces of equipment with very very limited uses.
It's time to sell farming equipment instead of weapons, the ones who buy need to feed their people!
I'd say, fix the problem instead. And what is the problem? The problem is the africa's wildlife is being killed off. Fix that instead of screwing up Australia.
I would love to hear what Steve "the Crocodile Hunter" would say about this. Sure the guy is the goofiest person I've seen from.au yet, but he is one of the few who really do care about animals and knows his shit. It's people like him we need to make decisions.
And since it's not really a profit to deal with win95 anymore, they shut it down. What's the deal here? If you don't like windows, they you should be happy, right? I honestly don't see the duality there. If there is such a large group that doesn't want their games for win than for linux, then there should be a gold mine there. But will people buy a lot of games for linux? In short, make your own future and choose on your own what to include in it.
On XP, anyone who has experienced any real trouble on their own with the licenses? I haven't, but I don't use a home licence (I do run legal mind you all, msdn subscription). As far as I've understood it, you to have to get a new serial if you do something, you have a 30 day grace period and there is no trouble at all getting this number if you have internet access. We are just talking minutes online or minutes on a phone. Could be it be that people who don't want to pay for their windows screaming out in anger about this?
Shipping even more flat screens has definitly interesting side effects. This means that Apple wants to lower the prize (for themselves) and it means all flat screens will be cheaper, and I am hoping it will be cheaper faster. This implies that I could, the next time I want a new computer, two at least 19", LCDs together with my brand new nVidia GF++.
So, everybody who doesn't care, or are mac maniacs, go buy one of these;)
Two formats I can't play in my favorite player (which happens to be just the mediaplayer, but it's the same thing if you are using other players). Will this be the same thing all over again? I don't mind new formats, especially if they are good, but if I can't watch them where I want to, who cares? If the big companies has to buy licenses to get them in their devices, and then force all publishers to use their special software... you know the drill.
I don't care if the software is closed source as long as protocols, codecs, formats, etc are open so anyone can implement and use them.
Always an if there isn't it? Well, my only concern is the possible harm for humanity. The more individuals we get with the same genes, the more likly they are to be wiped out, and "traditional" steroids (etc) have a tendecy to make the user aggresive, or degenerate the body in the long run.
So, as long as I won't suffer from it, let them have cloned teams and altered people. Maybe we can stop the madness that is cosmic surgery today as well.
I totally agree, and it's good that more and more people are seeing this. I think anyone who wants to should be able to keep what they do free, those who don't shouldn't be haressed.
Stallman couldn't care less about companies making real money to pay their workers. The situation today is vastly different. We are not talking about a driver for a printer that was close source so the printer became useless on a system, we are talking about a very high level software piracy, where nobody wants to pay.
If open source is a viable way to make a business, there is just one way to prove it, companies that makes a profit. And don't tell me, go out and start one instead, because M$ is still making the most money and thus must have the best idea on how to make money.
*laughs* I have to admit myself that the irony is very amusing in this case;) But shit happens and what can you say, it was almost two in the morning and I didn't compile it, ehm, spell check it before I posted it.
Now I want you to spot all the spelling misstakes native English speakers make ^_~
Till alla mina landsmän, hur fan kan de vara så kaxiga när de bara kan ett språk, jag skulle vilja se dem behöva använda sitt andra språk;)
The US should take a peak out to other countries in the world. There are solutions out there that works. People are so hung up on the negative sides, that they don't see anything positive. I rather see better suggestions and improvements, than just "don't do it, you are taking my freedom!".
The US isn't that terribly free either, the goverment is doing all sorts of things in the dark, which they have no good reason to do in the dark. The unions are weak and individual can easily be taken advantage of by the large corporations.
All in all, see the opportinities to improve. Think of it is a huge mainframe with old bad software that needs to be improved to handle the load...
You can get a region free DVD players in most stores here in Sweden. The quality if region 2 DVDs is low, and they have quite annoying "features" and lack what I usually want, i.e. the region 1 with the goodies, no translations (since I translate better myself and knows English better than the translators) and sometimes even DTS sound.
The zones were a terrible misstake according to me. I was happy, at last a cheap (well, kinda) medium which can hold movies at a resonable quality. All of a sudden I wanted to buy movies, but the whole region thing really made me feel screwed over. I even have my computer DVD set to region 1 and I refuse to buy region 2 DVDs now. When I think about it, why did I actually get a region free DVD player (it's an american player, cost me roughly $350 here in Sweden) to begin with?
When they stop trying to screw us over, we'll think about not screwing them over. But until then, happy hacking everyone.
This shows what the slashdot community thinks of software patents. I agree that they need to go, kinda, but for slightly different reasons. But what they do today is only to hinder development, forcing new names and similar techniques just to stay out of trouble for things that I think should be free for anyone to use. Isn't there a better way to pay inventors (because they should be paid I think) instead of this horrible system.
