Well... The guy was talking about software you run on your *workstation*
I run apace, mysql, etc, on my servers but as for my workstation? Nope. None of them. Why in the world would I want to run a webserver or sqlserver on my workstation? I'm sure the author of the post you replied to feels the same.
But as for software I *do* run on my WinXP box, lets see: Open Office - It's good enought for me to use instead of pirating MS office. Gimp - Good enough for me to not steal Photoshop from Adobe. Lame - Well... There *aren't* any closed source competitiors to this one.
That's it. Those are the *only* open source programs I run on non-server machines. Ok, most of my other software are freeware or shareware but *not* open source
I cold fly to, say, Tokyo in a matter o minutes! It would only take me seconds to visit my brothers, instead of having to drive for four hours! *And* I could take a small drive and visit the ISS. =-)
Just put a radarstation at each pole, with a dish the size of canada, and have them report any rocks, alien spaceships, galaxies, etc, that seem to be on a collison course.
Easy...

Well... I set my alarm so that I could watch it. (Just got home...) Would have been a real shame to miss it, since I guess I'll be around 50 - 60 next time it happens if I'm not misstaken.
There was som *real* nice once. Amoung others a double fireball on each side of a bright star and one that left a trail that spanned more than half my field of vision. Really beautiful. *sigh* Wish I could have filmed it. But then came the evil clouds and blocked my view, so I went home.:-(
Btw! You know that you can make a wish when you see a shooting star! So what did *you* wish for? =-)
My wish, with every blazing trail, was to pass my math exams in december and januari.;-)
Now I'm going to catch some sleep before going to school. Starts 13:15 today. Lucky me. Oyasumi nasai minna.
Well... Actually, high population density is *exactly* why the service sucks in cities. More people = Higher load per station = Need for smaller cells = Requires more stations per area. The problem isn't range but number of users per station. In places where lots of people gather and use their mobiles at the same time, you will need lots and lots of stations in a small area to handle the load since one station only can handle so many connections. Most companies won't expand their networks at the same rate new phones are sold though...
Well... When it-department i was working at last year got cut down, we who remained had to work between 10 - 15 hours a day to keep up. After a few weeks of that, you actually get *less* done in 15 hours than you used to do in 8. So the idiot who cuts down to much actually ends up shoting him/herself in the foot. You'll also alienate the emplyees and end up being hated by them. Not that every person in such positions actually care what their personell thinks about them, but if you're a company in a small town, you'll eventually end up being unable to employ new staff, since rumors about bad companies spread quickly.
Anyway... I got burned out in a couple of months and quit. That was over a year ago now and I'm still not recovered. But at least I didn't have one of those idiotic "can't work for competition" contracts. Not that it would have mattered, since I got so tired of working with computers that I've decide to make a career change.
My tip is to quit *before* you get burned out. It's a hell to get your act together again after it has happened...
Eum... Well, I've got around 260 Gigs of data on my harddrives that I would like to retain in case of a hardrive malfunction. Ok, at most I'll loose 160 Gig in one go but to backup that drive, I'd nees *two* of those disks.
And also, this kind of technology is probably a few years from consumer market. In a few years, how large harddrives do you think we'll have?
I wouldn't be suprised if I can go out and buy myself a 1TB drive by the time this hits the market.
And by the way. I am a home user. I'm sure there's thousands of other slashdoters who would have use of a really large backup media at home.
Mmm... This is probably a bit off topic, but I've always wondered *why* there isn't a midi over ethernet standard. It would be great if I could just simply plug my synth's into my network and assign ip's to them. That way I wouldn't have to have a *separate* midi "network" and I would be able to use both my mac and my pc to make music without having to move my midi interfaces between the two.:-/
And with gigabit ethernet availible, there's no problem with the bandwith being to small...
Also, you wouldn't have to connect everything *exactly* like before when moving them. It really is hell to get everything back together in a working fashion when you've been out and about with your synth's...:-(
Maybe something like Love Hina, Onegai Sensei or Happy Lesson? It's very much a comedy, but also very "incorrect" in most american and european's eyes in that it has lot's of semi-nude and lots of implied sexually tense situations that doesn't "belong" in childrens movies (read: cartoons). Ok, if you've watched lots of anime and get that very japanese humor, it's all very innocent. But there is no place where religious, uptight parents can get such tantrums over small things as in the western world. The US would top that list I suspect.:-)
I tried showing Neon Genesis Evangelion for my brother and his girlfriend. She was upset and wouldn't watch it because she thought of it as "almost being porn"!!! The same thing happened when we where watching Project A-ko. Some people has a *very* low tolerance level regarding cartoons.
Hehe... Why not try to air, say, Mahoromatic. =-) It's fun, it's sweet, and it's *very* ecci. I'm not sure about the age of the intended audience, but over here I can *never* imagine it getting rated for anyone under 15. Maybe even 18 if presented for really uptight people.
DVD wasn't competatively prices compared to vhs or cd when released. DVD-R's are just getting competative, as in price per MB, compared to CD-R. Does that mean that they shouldn't have bothered to release the standard? Of course not. That way, no new technology would ever see the light of day.
So if they do release this new diskformat, just wait a few years and it'll be at a price that the average consumer can afford. And by then something new will have arrived, that is expensive as hell but it 10x better...
Well... Realtime programming might now be an issue for you if you use an advanced OS coupled with a mighty cpu. But in many situations you might find yourself programming for, say, a small 1 MHz cpu in a timecritic controllsystem at a factory or chemicalplant or something like that. That's when you'll need your skills in realtime programming.
I don't understand your reasoning. If I want to change how my computer works, why should someone at apple want to stop me? It's not as if I'm changing the way *other* peoples computers are working. Or changing how osx works when doing a new install.
So why should they care if I want to do idiotic stuff like having my "Minimize" buttons shutdown the computer or make all windows render uppsidedown? (Or do something smart, like turning off transparency for menus!!!)

Soon we'll have organic spacestations and starships!

Hehe... :-)
There was an article about this, but regarding the situation in Stockholm in Computer Sweden today.
Strange coincident...
In my case, it's the software.
:-)
Not MS-office and stuff...
I use openoffice, gimp and as much other open software as I can even though I use windows.
But! Here's what doesn't exist for Mac or Linux:
The software I need for my synths.
The software I need to use for school.
Good Divx players. (No. The ones that exist suck.)
On the other hand, I would never even consider using an MS product in my servers.

What's with this "setting of some nukes will solve everyting" mentality in the US anyway?
Giant block of stone tumbling towards earth!
Solution: Let's nuke it!!!
Oh no! The poles are reversing!
Solution: Let's nuke the core!!!
The russians are being communistic!
Solution: Let's point nukes at'em!!!
The japanese won't give up!
Solution: Let's nuke'em!!!
Give up with the nuke fetishism already!

And noone but engineers would be able to use the os. ;-)
Wait! We're back in the early 80's again! =-)

Mouahahaha!
Linux XP!
Yeah, so? :-)
Ever read/seen Johnny Mnemonic?
That's how it works!
1. Get a socket
2. Plug in.
3. Get NAS
It's what we all should strive for.
Our own socket in the head!
Again... You *can't* boot of a flashcard in a standard pc.
You need noisy rotating media in one way or another.
(Unless you get a solid state ide-disk, but that's very expensive...)
Well... It might not solve any problems if you want to have a pc in your tv-room.
:-)
I haven't. I've got a PS2 with linux though.
It would be great to be able to use it to watch my movies without having to run a svideocable straight through my appartment.
I *would* like to use some kind of divx/mpeg software on it, but there isn't any good such software at the moment.
As it is right now, I end up watching my movies on my laptop instead.
So don't say the problem doesn't exist just because *you* haven't got the problem.
On the other hand, if you haven't already got the linux-kit it *would* be bit costly, yes...
Either way, I'm going to sleep now.
Oyasumi nasai.
