I'd have to admit that I don't mind the trailers. They can warn me off particularly stupid movies (of which there seems to be a LOT).
Every now and then I even see a trailer which causes me to think "Mhm, I think I'd like to see this."

However, it's as you say: the ads, followed by the moronic insults also cause me to not show up anymore. Heck, the insults show up on my DVD collection, forcing me to copy each DVD so I don't have to watch this crap. Thus all my DVDs are as AVI on my PC, while the DVDs themselves are standing on the shelf...

And what a coincidence - there's a RAM-drive of 4GB, hardware, battary-backed, bootable, which can sit in a PC slot and pretend to be a hard drive (needs no driver). I found it under the name "GigaByte i-Ram DDR GC-RAMDISK Hard Disk Drive SATA PCI" on eBay, as apparently you can't get it in a shop in Europe yet...

But the rest of the world (and USA sans Florida) hears about it.
This is great PR, truly amazing. If I wrote a game, I'd actually be jumping with joy if it was treated like this.

  9. Easy on More In-Game Advertising on the Way · · Score: 1

"Much more than 'free goodies,' the level of the interaction between Adidas and EA Sports has helped to create a dynamic and unique gaming experience,"

    Right.
Look, whoever buys these EA Sports games obviously are not in a very high league. They do not care about adverts. They watch TV, lots of it, with adverts in it. They wear t-shirts with advertising on it. Their shoes have company logos (more advertising!) on their side.
To them, (freely) advertising a large sports company means that they appear sporty - which most of them badly require.

Pfff. So which one of us cares about advertising in EA Sport games? Nobody with enough brains.
Thus adding advertising to this is actually a good idea - the people buying this trash will actually see the ads as A Good Thing.

Mind you, DVDs have a higher resolution (easier to make good screenshots), don't wear out (cool) and are much smaller. Thus I use them.

Now, along comes a new format. Can do higher resolution on films. Has no other advantages, except a *lot* of hardwired protections. Thus I don't care at all.

Data storage? What for? I have a simple software-RAID 5 on my Linux box: 1.2 TB. Easily (and soon) upgraded to approximately 3 TB. No, I don't really need that, but I like the idea behind it :)
Using something for backup? Nope, can't. I do a backup to another RAID array, which I have sitting physically distant. Nothing else will do, and the RAID array is dirt cheap.

I certainly don't need some or other protected format hyped mainly by the movie industry.

Exactly this happened to a good friend of mine, over 15 years ago by now. She arrived for her vacation, the custom people were terrified that she might actually work during the two months she planned to be there, locked here (together with two other people) into a guarded hotel room, and put her on the flight out on the next day.

You find this hard to believe? US customs are a serious pain in the neck. I remember trying to extend my H1-D work visa in 2000.
I had just had it extended, but since I switched companies, I had to get this confirmed. I was told by the border people that I do not have an Engineering Degree (for Software Engineer, see?), and even a heck of a lot of back-and-forth only demonstrated that the moron at the border is God, and his word counts.
Thus I found myself in Canada in January. With just the clothes on my back (from California, thus I was not exactly wearing a fur jacket).

Okay, today I'm happy not to live in the US anymore, but I did loose everything I had back then. A bit irritating, really.

Summary: if you hear stories of how idiotic the US border people can be - better believe it.
