It might be interesting to you guys, but the department of transportation (DOT) rates motorcycle helmets as "safe" when they can withstand the fall from the height of an average man at the average riding height of a motorcycle without allowing too much damage to the human brain! The belief is, that most people fall over to the side, not head first! Thus, the helmet has to withstand that impact! So they don't care if you crash head first, thinking you'll have worse comorbid problems internally, not just brain trauma.
There are other standards, such as the snell, which makes different types of helmets with the same rating but with "improvements." Anyhow, long story short, lot's of heights can kill a man... you don't have to be more than 5 feet of the ground:P
I had been wondering what was going to happen with GH3 on the wii for a while. And with all the "it's up in the air" news about GH3 for wii and it being on-line, i lost heart. So one day i check some random website that mentions it, i look up gh3 on wikipedia, and i say to my buddies at work "i'm gonna check out the local game stop to see if they have it in stock."
I get there, spend a while cause the sales kid says there is 1 in stock, but he can't find it! haha! i was getting impatient but some other dude said "its right in front of you, dude" and so the kid looks and it's under the register! Bad ass!
Well i hope you can find it, it's really bad ass, especially on the wii. My buddies at who have it for the xbox say wii peeps are spoiled with their wireless controllers:P
At first I didn't really see the point. It is a laptop with windows XP. How was that news-worthy? Then I kind of remembered that vista is the new ME and it seems a lot of people think so too.
Psst! Didn't you get the memo? Winders ME is "it that shall not be named" - ever!
From my point of view, i still haven't been able to compare linux to fbsd. The reason i say that is ease of use. SURE everyone says "but linux is so ez." But from my point of view, the freebsd ports are bad ass! It's easy to get anything up and going once you have your main install up and running. Need apache? Want those extra mods? Just port install clean! Debian kicked ass withs its format for installing software, and others poked around with it. But it never really came to be anything close as the ports system from my point of view. Sure, i haven't used anything but SUSE in like, since debian died and then came back, and suse is cool, but it's still no fbsd.
I admit my point of view also has a lot to do with me wanting to learn fbsd ("unix") instead of linux (which red hat was free and #1 at the time). And sure, i read through the bsd bible and didn't learn a whole lot from it. But it is what i ended up using and liking the best. I've been able to do the most and most productive on it. The only thing i haven't been able to do on a fbsd system is play PC games. OH and run macromedia flash products (creator not player). So that's really what ties me to the windows 2k/xp world Otherwise it's bad ass! It's on my laptop and blows people away when they see my gui. It's like i tell them, vista is trying to do what was done in *nix 10 years ago. And since people just don't know, i like to say how osx is based on BSD:P
i'm rambling but, bsd's port system has to become a standard on linux systems (for me and people like me to be able to migrate to them). I still feel linux is too fragmented with so many distro's and source distro's for distro's. I hate digging all over the place to find what i need. Sure that's part of the fun, but bsd makes it a lot more fun when it's all thrown in a structured directory.
one of the examples i like is that of the coral castle located in florida i believe. Not only did 1 man build it, but the same man moved it's location, ALONE!!#*!@)#*! It's awesome. But, how did he do it? Surely the old techniques he used aren't special, right? This according to the OP anyways. Knowledge like this should have stuck around because of it's usefulness right? Or is it just not impressive anymore?
That was a big complaint of mine for a long time! How come the mexican pyramids weren't included in the wonders of the world? Although it was explained why, it was ridiculous to say that lesser pyramids counted because they were big, but more advanced designed pyramids were accepted!
I should probably stop but i'm on a roll now! Not only were they built to specifications, not as "trial and error" as egyption ones where they still stand incomplete, but some are even "astronomically correct." One of the more impressive ones are in tune with the summer and winter solstice.
"Ubuntu 7.10 was the first Linux install I've ever done that worked! (Now what do I do with it?)"
Now try FreeBSD! Right now you're still in the stone age of linux/unix. Who can't install linux now a days? Sure it's cool, but it's no longer special. And thats where you miss the point. Back in the day, it was a huge deal, knowledge that hadn't previously existed.
Try coming up with a new way to do something that you already do. It's not easy starting from scratch. But when you do, it's a huge deal. Like the microwave bacon hanger! How many people have been waiting for that, eh?!
my buddy is a engineer who does a lot of cad stuff, and guess what? the software he learned to use at school (Cal Poly Pomona) and now uses at work doesn't work on his vista notebook his GF bought for him hahaha ooops i mean it's not funny. so now he has to look to save a few $k so he can buy it for vista! yay!
You know, i have almost everyone i've set up/know using a 2 partition system minimum! As i always explain, you can always ghost winders "without losing" your work files. But if it's all in one messy "drive" then you do risk losing it all. Regardless of how right or wrong that idea is, ghost works bitchen in that set up! And now, everyone is happy (no hour long formats and installs) and i'm like a rock star to them hahaha.
Firstly, there is no standards body that defines standard rules of English. Secondly, although I agree that poor grammar and spelling can make something unreadable, it is also possible to make a grammatically correct statement that is unreadable. (for instance, the Buffalo sentence.) I'm all for bitching people out that write so poorly they can't even be understood, but the constant criticism of minor errors that don't affect meaning or readability pisses me off.
Half of the comments on this fucking site are people bitching about someone using "There" instead of "Their" or some other ridiculously insignificant grammatical error. If you knew what the correct word to use was, you were obviously able to understand the meaning of the comment, so just keep your fucking mouth shut.
I agree! I always end up getting into arguments in a language i speak well, but not perfectly. So then i always revert to english, and then they shut up, because they don't understand english hahaha... the point is, i tell them in my non-english language, "if you're too stupid to understand what i am trying to say, then that is not my problem. Many others are very able and capable of understanding what i am trying to say."
This is an excellent example of what i always tell people that to me, is "intelligence Vs. ability to reason." Intelligence = knowledge, reason = too much to type but basically using knowledge. I stump a lot of people when i tell them "so you think you're smart/intelligent eh? what can you make with a piece of wood, some graphite, metal rings and rubber?"
anyhow, the point is when people start looking at me like i'm the moron because i don't speak this non english language perfectly, it only shows (at least me) who really is the moron in that situation, the one who can't comprehend what someone is saying, even when most of their words make sense to them. I live in LA (CA) and come across a LOT of non native english speaking people, and if i was as smart as these people who have criticized me, then i'd never be able to get anything done. But i'm glad i'm patient, understanding and caring enough not to point out people how "stupid they are because they don't speak the language properly" like a PHD in English.
This may be nitpicking, but I was somewhat shocked about the tone of the (paraphrased) emails. There seems a lot of f**k and s**t flowing around from the head honchos of this dodgy outfit right to the bottom

you are right that a lot of the meaning has been lost. I always enjoyed "Robotech" because it's what i knew. As i got older and more into it i checked out macross, and not just the "english version." Sure, i don't read or understand japanese, but the dubbed versions, voice versions - even the japanese audio tracks tell a different story because of the emphasis of the actors. It's pretty cool to take in all these different points of view.
I am sure all fans are hoping for multiple movies, and if they in LOTR style man, that would be bitchen. I was happy with the shadow chronicles and never ever thought of a live action... but if they can pull it off, that would rule, dude!
Also, we can get some bad ass toys but you are right, a lot of toys are dumbed down.
Robojox was an awesome movie! As a matter of fact, for me, it was the live action version of robotech for a long time! because nothing better would come out along those lines. In video games, the PC game mech warrior in all its crappy glory when it first came out game me the fix i needed too! Also, hollywood could really fook this up and turn a lot of people off, which would be a horrible thing because many fans are enjoying the still fairly recent release of the shadow chronicles. After waiting a few years for it to come out, and everyone thinking that was it, but HG really just wanting to "build up the market" for it's release, fans finally got something more. Sure, you had vhs, dvds, more dvds, more dvds of the same thing with new sounds, comic books, paper backs with "extended story lines" and a few off shoots of the original story line that take place in the distant past and the future, but we needed closure/continuation!
Now i just read how they are making a sequel to the shadow chronicle's? bad ass! I hope if the live action movie goes into production, it is done as well as it can be and picks up new fans. But if it fooks up and doesn't make money, i hope that won't ruin the "anime" version of robotech we know and love.
There's so much to talk about! But i dont' want to seem like a nerd, you know... But jennifer aniston would be hot as lisa hahaha and owen wilson would be bad ass as roy. Well, I see this as bad ass. The reason is because they are using technology to help them do their job, instead of doing it for them. I think when it falls into replacing humans, that is where it must be a developed country. But in developing countries, technology can be best utilized. After all, who really wants a factory of robots where no humans can be employed? NM...
The U.S. has transfered so much capital and IP to China, and we are so dependent on the steady stream of container shipping from China you pretty much have to look the other way at anything short of open warfare.
I had a friend in the army who said, for every 1 US soldier, they are worth 3-5 chinese soldiers. Forget about the disrespect he is paying them... I argued, even if that was the case, at the time our total armed forces was 300k. You compare that to 1M chinese and you don't have enough for a 1:3 ratio.
He argued that technology would beat them out. And i didn't have a counter argument to this. But! Years later, someone made an interesting pointed when we talked about this, and that is mentioned here too!
The U.S. has transfered so much capital and IP to China, and we are so dependent on the steady stream of container shipping from China you pretty much have to look the other way at anything short of open warfare.
As they so simply put it, we're going to be looking for them on their land, in our waters trying to approach us so we can blow them sky high, but they'll already be here, in containers waiting for the right moment.
we can't even inspect all of the containers and catch all of the illegal items and even less illegals entering the country "by the boat/container"
So from my point of view, it's a little arrogant and vary ignorant to think china can't do a thing to us. Like someone else mentioned, take away the 1 child limit and they can feed a war like no one else. Sure, it's not just about people, but look at russia, who sent men with no guns into battle! Sometimes it's just strategy.
I don't understand why anyone is surprised! Because come on guys, anyone who's played Command & Conquer knows that the Chinese have crazy tanks and hackers who hack their enemy and steal their $$$. And the more time they spend hacking, the better they get. You can even built an internet cafe for the hackers and then they really make some cash!
This must be one of those instances of life imitating art:P
I think the point the GP is making is that no-one can be born with it as the 12-tone system is a man-made invention. Very experienced musicians are aware of what A is because over time they have learned what A is through the constant use when tuning instruments.
I agree. i started playing piano, then trombone for many years, and eventually tried harmonica and guitar. Point is, i've played many instruments for many years, but i am most proficient with the guitar. I can "feel" when i am out of tune. When i strike a string, i can hear and feel it. But that is not from natural ability, but from experience. I can not say the same for piano, which i don't play nearly as much. But when i did play trombone, which was about 7-8 years, i could also tell differences in notes. I think the reason is because trombone has such variable notes. If you don't place the slide in the correct place, your note will be off. So it's very important to learn to listen and distinguish the notes it plays correctly.
There was a comment posted Slashdot once that contained some "sacred text" of Scientologists. Copyrighted sacred text. Scientologists forced Slashdot to delete the comment, and so far that is the only comment ever to have been deleted from Slashdot. That's also the reason why "Comments are owned by the Poster." is part of the text at the bottom of the screen.
I can only imagine that that statement was referring to that episode. I'd hope so because I laughed out loud when I read that.
Why can't the inet just do with that text what they did with the hd-dvd and blu-ray encryption algorithms? Sure, you can tell a site to remove content, but you can't tell the inet to do so!

:P
This must be one of those instances of life imitating art
Why can't the inet just do with that text what they did with the hd-dvd and blu-ray encryption algorithms? Sure, you can tell a site to remove content, but you can't tell the inet to do so!
