Robotech Heading to Big Screen, Starring Toby Maguire

dominique_cimafranca writes "Classic anime cult favorite "Robotech" may be next for the big screen live action treatment, if recent news from SciFi.com's SCI FI Wire is to be believed. Tobey Maguire will produce and may star in the film. The article says 'Warner Brothers Pictures picked up the rights to Robotech, which features giant robots known as mechas. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans as an SF franchise a la Paramount's hit Transformers.'" I wonder if they'll go back to the Macross source material when plotting the movie... there's a lot more good substance there then in our version.

What I am perhaps most worried about is that they will try to cram the three chapters/ages of what we know as Robotech in the US into one movie. This would be a mistake, I feel. However, I would also hope they would take enough time for some character development. Roy Fokker plays a huge role in the first chapter, even if he is... otherwise indisposed. Will I care, at that point in the film, that he is making an exit? Will the characters of Claudia and Rick, believably?

One thing that they absolutely need: an orchestra.
One thing they can do without in a movie, but which was crucial to the series: a narrator.

I almost want to say the first arc could be made into a trilogy by itself. The discovery, development, training, the first fold, being lost, death, first contact(s), spies, micronization, destruction, reconstruction, more destruction, etc are going to be hard to squeeze into a single movie, even if it turns into "Dances with Bretai" and is 3 hours long. The main problem I had with The Sentinels was that we were introduced to a whole new alien race, find out they are bad, and see them defeated in the span of 90 minutes. While I'm sure part of it is latent Comic Book Guy "It was better when I was 8 years old" feelings, I'm pretty sure they would have taken 5 episodes of introduction and explanation for me to care that anything happened to them.

For some reason, when thinking about the Mospedia chapter, I keep thinking of the danger room from X-Men III. Mostly, the scrapyards.

There's also no way it will be subjectively as good, either. I was a kid when I first encountered Robotech. I encountered it when I was like nine or ten. It appealed to me at first because it was animated and had transforming robots. But once I got into the story, holy shit. Love, loss, death, consequences, this was not just some Transformers knock-off. Why did it make such an impression? First, I'd never seen anything like it before. Second, I was young and it was the first time I really would have seen anything like this. Then I picked up the novelization and it was all the better.

Even the lamest narrator is preferable to the Asimovian-style dialogues that plague SF movies otherwise.

Even so, I cannot help but be skeptical about this effort, even if they restricted themselves to the Macross 'age'.

Cramming the story and universe into a 2-hour development would normally work much better if you can make some assumptions on the context available to the audience (before or after the movie) - but this is not as mainstream as the X-men or Serenity (for example), so it could feel very rushed and background gaps would be seen as 'the movie does not make sense', rather than 'there is a rich universe in the background they didn't have time to expose'.

Trilogies would be a hard-sell, but I'd actually prefer to see this as a mini-series.
Then you'd have the time and scope for character AND historical development - and you could do away with narrators, expository monologues, etc. and use more visual ways to connect and move the story along.

Whichever way they go, I do hope they avoid making their interpretation a Battlestar-Galactica clone.
There are enough parallels to make that tempting, and I imagine that's one of the reasons that would move the project forward at this point.

It explains the history behind the Robotech Masters and the Invid, the origins of protoculture, the motivations of Zor, and the sequence of events which led up to the loss of the SDF-1, among other things.

In my experience Hollywood loves a trilogy so I think you'll see the Macross Saga as the first film. If it does well, then you'll see The Masters (weakest of the three unfortunatly) and then the Invid Invasion.

The Robotech storyline realy wasn't that bad. It was, however hampered by three things. The first problem was that the original americanized story was hacked up and slightly dumbed down so that it would work well as a syndicated, afternoon cartoon. I liked the show as a teenager, but later I read the books by McKinney, the Graphic Novel and even the Sentinels by Mckinney as well and they really filled in a lot of blank spots that made the story much more interesting. The Sentinels especially did a much better job of explaining Zor, his ship, the history of the Masters, the Zentradi, the Invid and the role of the Earth and humanity in the entire storyline. My suggestion would be to uses the animated series for visual cues and use the written work as the basis for the storyline.

The second problem was some of the animation used especially in the Macross Saga. You could tell what was drawn as "fill" to fit the storyline and what was the original anime. Is there such a thing as "stock footage" in anime? The dialogue as expressed by the voice actors was rather cheesey as well which gave a rather "cheap feel to it. In my own opinion, Aline Leslie (the voice of Lisa Hayse and other smaller parts) did the best job (comparatively speaking) and was the most believeable. The rest? Definately grade B.

The last issue was the Minmei character and especially her singing. That part of the plot line has got to be fixed with a more mature, more believable character and for god's sake better music. The title theme and the rest of the score wasn't that bad. If they'd put a full ochestra behind it probably would be pretty good big screen score.

Unlike, say, G.I. Joe, Transformers has been in more-or-less continuous toy production since Beast Wars. Several of the recent comics are considered near-canon, and several collectible toys have been made just based on "The War Within" comics. Debate over the "authenticity" of the so-called exploding-metal "Bayformers" was polarized to say the least.

And way, way too many fans would jump into the forums arguing that the Generation 1 cartoon was the be-all and end-all of Transformers storytelling, despite the numerous animation gaffes, plot contradictions (did Megatron build the Constructicons, or vice versa?), and other assorted nonsense such as you would expect from an 80s kids cartoon.

The "Transformers" movie, despite its huge separation from previous Transformers generations and obvious popcorn-movie plot, was a blockbuster hit for fans and non-fans alike. Because, surprise!-- the fans constituted only a small percentage of the actual box office receipts. The rest was made up of Americans and non-Americans who just wanted to watch a bunch of giant robots beating the crap out of each other on a movie screen the size of a junior high school.

Any, ANY "Robotech" that does anything less than strictly reinterpret the original Japanese story is going to be controversial. But you know what? Those fans, frankly, aren't important enough to the movie studio. Or so that users who don't think it's a good insight could mod it down to -1 Overrated.

Speaking as one who has played the Battletech boardgame and all of the Mechwarrior videogames as well as read many of the books in the series I have been wating for this franchise to be made into a movie for years. There is ample source material, lots of cool robots, and some very good story lines. I think it could make some great movies if handled right.

I agree. Battletech would make an amazing movie, but I don't really see it being commercially viable. You'd end up getting some rehashed, watered down story like Starship Troopers.

There are many reasons for this. Some kinds of war movies work well. Typically, those that involve platoons or groups of people that interact together. Submarine movies work good because everyone is there on the bridge. Same with shows like Star Trek.

Movies that center around single people in ships, fighting each other don't work well, because it's much harder to have character interaction, and seeing your squadmates on a video monitor doesn't work in the movies.

Now, it might work out to have the majority of the story outside the mechs. Maybe following a platoon of ground forces. But then we don't get that up-close-and-personal feel of the battle mechs that fans would be looking for.

We'll see, though.. as long as Uwe Boll doesn't do it...
